Waterford easilt overcome Sligo in National League Tie

Waterford Intermediate lady footballers recorded their third victory in the Tesco Home-grown Division 3 clash with Sligo on Sunday last in Fraher Field. Played in terrible underfoot conditions, both teams made very tentative starts and it was Waterford who registered the first score of the game in the 4th minute with a well taken point from Michelle Ryan following neat build up play by Linda Wall and Maria Delahunty. Stephanie O Reilly equalised matters in the 7th minute and three minutes later Sinead Ryan opened her account for the Deise girls with a pointed free. The play at this stage swung from end to end and Katie Walsh got Sligo’s second point in the 11th minute to tie the game at 2 points apiece. Great work from Michelle Ryan and Linda Wall set Sinead Ryan up for the first Waterford goal in the 12th minute to give the home side a lead they would not relinquish and indeed they could have gone further ahead had it not been for the brilliance of Sligo’s goalkeeper Noelle Gormley who twice denied Waterford certain goals in the space of two minutes. Maria Delahunty stretched Waterford’s lead with a point in the 14th minute and one minute later Aoife Murray had a great score which started with a Megan Dunford interception near her own goal and ended nine passes later with the Comeragh Rangers girls firing Waterford 5 points ahead 1-4 to Sligo’s 0-2.Stephanie O Relliy added to Sligo’s score in the 16th minute with a point but this was quickly cancelled out with a Maria Delahunty effort. In the 23rd minute Katie Walsh tacked on a point for Sligo which was quickly replied to by a Sinead Ryan free and Grainne Carty and Maria Delahunty exchanged points to leave the half time score Waterford 1-7 Sligo 0-5.
Waterford opened the second half in whirl-wind fashion Aileen Wall scored a point after 31 seconds. Aoife Murray took over the scoring and had the ball in the Sligo net almost directly from the kick out, she then pointed in the 3rd minute and following a great movement was on hand to put the game out of Sligo’s reach in the 7th minute with another goal. One minute later Sinead Ryan was on hand to score her second goal of the game to extend the lead to 16 points; 4-9 to 0-5. Maria Delahunty kept the score ticking over with a point in the 9th minute and Sinead Ryan brought her personal tally to 2-2 with another point in the 11th minute. Pat Sullivan made a number of changes at this stage but it did not affect the intensity of the Waterford play Eimear Fennell kicked a great score and Sinead Ryan kicked yet another point in reply to Sligo’s point from midfielder Bernice Byrne and the icing was on the cake when a brilliant move led to Lauren Mc Gregor rounding the keeper to score Waterford’s fifth goal. Sligo to their credit did not give up and Stephanie O Reilly forced a great save from Waterford goalie Clodagh Walsh and also hit the woodwork twice in the closing moments. Jonathon Murphy brought matters to an end to leave the final score Waterford 5-13 Sligo 0-5.
Manager Pat Sullivan was very pleased with the overall performance of the team and the excellent inter play between backs and forwards. Next up for the Deise girls is an away tie against Tipperary next weekend.
Waterford lined out as follows: Katie Hannon, Megan Dunford, Karen Mc Grath, Emma Murray, Michelle Mc Grath, Elaine Power, Caoimhe Mc Grath, Mary Kate Morrissey, Mairead Wall, Linda Wall (capt), Maria Delahunty (0-4,) Aileen Wall(0-1), Michelle Ryan (0-1) Sinéad Ryan(2-4) and Aoife Murray(2-2)
Subs used; Nicola Fennell, Mary Foley, Eimear Fennell(0-1),Clodagh Walsh, Kate Mc Grath, Ciara Hurley, Shauna Dunphy, Nora Dunphy, Emer Scanlan, Margaret Revins, Lauren Mc Gregor (1-0), and Aoife Dunne.

Waterford and Sligo Ladies clash in top of the table tie

Sligo make the long trek to Dungarvan next Sunday to play against the Deise ladies in the third round of the Tesco Homegrown league. This will be an intriguing battle as both teams have 100% records in the league to date and sit proudly on top of the table. Both teams recorded one point victories at home to Wexford in the earlier rounds and while Waterford were very impressive against Fermanagh the last day out, the same could be said for the Connacht ladies who impressed in their first round game against Longford.

In the corresponding game last season Waterford who were flying high at the top of the league were brought down to earth up in Sligo when the home team recorded a six points victory on the scoreline of 1-15 to 1-9. Sligo were impressive also in the championship last year and were eventually beaten by the intermediate champions Down in a hum-dinger of a quarter final on the score line Down 2-14 Sligo 1-10

Waterford are progressing nicely under new management and the mix of experienced players with a good sprinkling of the minor panel is paying dividends. Competition is strong for places on the team and manager Pat Sullivan is delighted with the response given in training. Sunday’s game is yet another big step on the learning curve for this Waterford team but if they go about their task in a similar manner to the way they approached the Fermanagh game they should come out on top on Sunday next.

Please note that Sunday’s game is timed for 11.45 a.m. (much earlier than usual) in Fraher Field with Jonathan Murphy in charge of proceedings.

Waterford easily overcome Fermanagh in National League tie

Waterford Intermediate lady footballers recorded their second victory in the Tesco Home-grown Division 3 clash with Fermanagh on Sunday last in Fraher Field.  Fermanagh travelled to Dungarvan as favourites on the back of their victory over the Deise girls in last year’s All Ireland Quarter final but they were met by a resolute Waterford team eager to even the score. Waterford’s manager Pat Sullivan made two changes from the fifteen that started last week with Mairead Wall coming into the middle of the field and Grainne Kenneally starting at centre half forward.

Playing in ideal conditions for football both teams started brightly with Sharon Little opening the scoring for the Lakesiders in the 5th minute. Waterford quickly hit back, good work from Karen McGrath resulted in a free which was slotted over by Maria Delahunty. Maria was on target with another free in the 9th minute to give the Deise girls a lead that they would not surrender. In the 15th minute captain Linda Wall got a point following a great move involving Megan Dunford and Hannah Landers. Centre back Elaine Power broke up a Fermanagh attack and set off on a 40m.run and planted the ball in the roof of the Fermanagh net giving the Fermanagh goalie Róisín Gleeson no chance to leave Waterford ahead 1-4 to a point after 16 minutes. Gráinne Kenneally got in on the scoring act with a good point two minutes late. The game turned on its head in the next 10- minutes Caroline Little saw her well struck penalty rebound off the post to the relief of the Waterford girls and while Joanne Doonan got Fermanagh’s second point in the 27th minute, it was Waterford who hit a purple patch and finished the half in blistering style. A goal from Maria Delahunty who was following in on a shot from Sinead Ryan which hit the post, another superb individual goal one minute later from Michelle Ryan and two points from Hannah Landers in additional time left Waterford firmly in the driving seat at half time on the score line Waterford 3-6 Fermanagh 0-2

Waterford opened the second half in no mood to squander their lead, Gráinne Kenneally pointed in the first minute and was quickly followed up by a point from Michelle Ryan after Michelle McGrath turned defence into attack with a great run upfield. In the 35th minute Aoife Murray was introduced for Michelle Ryan and had an immediate effect on proceedings with her first touch of the ball setting up Sinead Ryan for a well taken goal. Aileen Wall replaced her sister Linda and Mary Foley made a welcome return to competitive action replacing Emma Murray as Pat Sullivan rang the changes. All the changes made no difference to the style of Waterford’s play and Sinead Ryan pointed a free to extend the lead. Mairead Power replaced Caoimhe McGrath in the back line before Aoife Murray got a great point when her goal bound rasper was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Fermanagh keeper Roisin Gleeson. Ciara Hurley replaced Mairead Wall at field and was on hand to set up Aileen Wall for a well taken score. Still more changes appeared from the Waterford bench as Nora Dunphy and Lauren Mc Gregor made appearances replacing Karen McGrath and Mary Kate Morrissey. Aileen Wall had yet another point in the 50th minute and Noelle Connolly replied for Fermanagh but it was mere consolation at this stage. Emer Scanlon and Margaret Revins joined the fray replacing Michelle McGrath and Maria Delahunty and Margaret Revins was immediately in the action drawing a great save from the over worked Fermanagh goalie. Shauna Dunphy and Aoife Dunne completed the Waterford subs replacing Hannah Landers and Sinead Ryan and the biggest cheer of the day was for Margaret Revins in the last minute as she got Waterford’s fifth goal, to leave the Deise comprehensive victors on the score line Waterford 5-12 Fermanagh 0-3.

This was as comprehensive a victory as it could be and Pat Sullivan was well pleased with the overall performance and the positivity shown by his team. The team worked well as a unit and the build up and support play was excellent to watch throughout the game. Fermanagh did not play well and were at a major disadvantage that their game last weekend had been postponed but there is no taking away from a very good Waterford performance. The blend of youth and experience is starting to gel well together and are producing an exciting brand of football. The manager is aware of the task ahead of the team and the amount of hard work required to gain success. This game was a major step up in performance from the encounter against Wexford and the manager is under no illusions of the further step needed to account for the form team at the moment Sligo, who like Waterford are unbeaten in the league. The girls next match will be against Sligo in Fraher Field in two weeks time Sunday 22nd February.

Waterford Lined out as follows: Katie Hannon, Megan Dunford, Karen McGrath, Emma Murray, Michelle McGrath, Elaine Power(1-0), Caoimhe McGrath, Mary Kate Morrissey, Mairead Wall, Linda Wall (capt)(0-1),Gráinne Kenneally(0-2), Hannah Landers(0-2), Maria Delahunty (1-2,) Sinéad Ryan(1-1) and Michelle Ryan (1-1)

Subs used Aoife Murray(0-1) Aileen Wall (0-2), Mairead Power, Ciara Hurley, Nora Dunphy Lauren Mc Gregor, Emer Scanlan, Margaret Revins(1-0),Shauna Dunphy and Aoife Dunne.

Brave Lismore were put to the pin of their collar

Brave Lismore were put to the pin of their collar in All Ireland Semi-Final
Lismore  1-14   Oranmore/Maree  1-12
Lismore are through to the All Ireland Intermediate club final after a thrilling 1-14 to 1-12 win over Oranmore Maree of Galway on Sunday last February 1st. Caitriona McGlone's 9th minute goal gave the Cathedral Town the ideal start and four points from Aoife Hannon left it 1-9 to 0-6 at half-time. Throw in was set for 2.30 in Charleville GAA grounds in ideal weather conditions for a good game of camogie.

It was Lismore who came out of the blocks scoring the first point of the game courtesy of Aoife Hannon on the 3rd minute followed by another from her on the fourth. Lismore were well in control and were on the attack putting the Galway backs under severe pressure. Lismore corner forward the speedy Johanna Houlihan won the ball on her wing and ran straight for the Galway goal and slotted the ball over for a well taken point. Oranmore were coming into the game and were putting great pressure on the Lismore defence who were punished for their hard defending as Oranmore’s Ailish O’Reilly made no mistake in converting two frees on the fifth and sixth minutes. Lismore who were still on the attack on the other end with Johanna Houlihan once again on the run passed the ball to the awaiting Caithriona McGlone who in turn banged the ball to the back of the Oranmore net on the 9th minute. This put a bit of daylight between the sides and it seemed that Lismore were going to pull away from the Galwegian’s, but Oranmore replied on the tenth minute with a point from play courtesy of Kelly Malone. Aoife Hannon who was on fire with her free taking converted on the eleventh as a result of a push on the back of her team mate Sharon Williams. The scores were coming in hard and fast as Oranmore’s Ailish O Reilly converted on twelfth minute from a free.

It was Lismore who dominated for the next ten minutes with Shona Curran, Aoife Hannon and Nicola Morrissey scoring a point each in this time frame. Ailish O’Reilly scored once more from a free on the twenty fourth minute followed three minutes later a score for Lismore by captain Shona Curran which was set up by Ruth Geoghegan. It was Ailish O Reilly and Nicola Morrissey who had the final say of the half scoring a point each for their sides in the dying minutes of the half. Half time score Lismore 1-09 Oranmore/Maree 0-06

The second half began, and two minutes into the half a harsh red card decision left Lismore with fourteen players which put the Lismorian’s under severe pressure for remainder of the game. It was youngster Sharon Williams who won the ball on the thirty fifth minute and made no mistake and slotted it over the ball opening the scoring of the half. Oranmore were on the attack for the next fifteen minutes and were plugging back the scores point by point leaving the score reading Lismore 1-10 to Oranmore’s 0-11 with ten minutes to go only two points separating the sides. Lismore gathered their momentum at this stage and scored three crucial points courtesy of Nicola Morrissey, Shona Curran and Aisling O’Brien which lifted the Lismore spirits and seemed to feel that the danger was gone. But the Galway All Star Aisling O Reilly grabbed the ball at mid field and made a deft run towards the Lismore goal and struck to the back of the Lismore net on the fifty seventh minute. Nerves were very tense on the Lismore side and Ailish O Reilly once more pointed on the fifty ninth minute leaving only the minimum between the sides. Two minutes of extra time was announced and Lismore captain did the captains roll in style with great pressure on her shoulders took a long distance free about sixty yards out slotted the ball over putting two points between the sides. The final whistle was blown on the puck out to the delight of the Lismore team and their supporters. The final score reading Lismore 1-14 Oranmore/Maree 1-12.

Lismore are set for the All Ireland final at headquarters on March 1st for the second year in a row and hope to go one better this year by winning it in Croke Park.

Most Impressive Female Sports person in January 2015.

For some reason, Ladies Sports find it very difficult to get coverage in the media.

Nationally, for example, Yesterday on RTE’s Sunday Sports Programme on Radio 1, when a round up of the day’s activity was given, the result of the only Senior All-Ireland Camogie Club semi final played on the day was given. Two Intermediate semi finals were played at the same time, but no results were given despite the results and updates been given across social media outlets.

The first round of this year’s Ladies National Football League was also played yesterday. On the same programme the results of the Division One games were given. Again results in the other three divisions were available on Social Media and on the Internet, but no results were given. What would it have taken to read out the results not given? 30 seconds max?

In recent years the amount of coverage given to ladies sports has increased, but at a national level it’s often only results from the very top grades that are given. The exception to the rule may be TG4 at a national level who through their sponsorship in ladies football show a number of games each year.

Once upon a time here in Ireland we had one TV station in our homes in Ireland. Then we had two. Most of us then began to pick up the terrestrial channels from the UK and then along came Sky and all that they bring us, followed by the likes of the already mentioned TG4, TV3, E4 and of more resent times UTV Ireland.

With so much competition for companies to win over viewers, you would be expecting more of them to compete for different sports available for us to watch, outside of the GAA Championships, National Leagues, The Premier League and Rugby.

Wouldn’t it be great for us sports fans if some of the so called ‘lesser’ or minority sports were to be shown, even if it was a half hour or hours highlights show once or twice a week. Wouldn’t it be great to see more Camogie, Ladies Football, Basketball, Hockey, Athletics etc. on TV and more importantly ladies games?

On the local front, things are a lot better. Local newspaper editors do all in the power to get as much into their paper as is possible.

The same applies to radio stations. Radio stations in the past and to a certain degree even today need the co-operation of people involved in different sports to help them get them the information that needs to be aired. Maybe in the last three or four years, with twitter taking off it’s a little easier. All you need is for a DJ or someone in a newsroom to have a computer or similar devise turned onto them and to get to know the genuine people who attend games on a regular basis and to call out what they upload if they are followed.

Anybody that follows me on Twitter or Facebook (thomaskeane1973 is my user name for sporting updates on both) will know that I try and give as much coverage to women’s sports that I follow as I do with men’s.

Some have asked why I do this. The answer is rather simple. Women put in the same efforts when it comes to sport as men. Sometimes the efforts are even greater. And it’s more important that we support them in any way we can because of this.

With some time now, I have been thinking about something. I have noticed that when it comes to the various sporting awards presented for each month and the end of the year, it’s very difficult for women to be included. Don’t get me wrong. They do get nominated but at times it takes an absolute exceptional effort to win.

I have put my idea to a few people in different sports and the response from all I have asked is the same. Go for it.

Most of what I write about online has to do with the GAA and its sister Associations, the Ladies Football and Camogie Associations.

From now on, each month I will be looking at a number of people involved in different sports that have impressed me over a calendar month or who received recognition from within their chosen sport. I intend to name the players or teams that impressed me most and to pick out an overall winner.

The prize for the winner each month is a big one, a mention from me online. What more would you want. LOL

January is usually a quiet month when it comes to sport, but despite this there were a number of impressive performers.

In Athletics West Waterford’s Terri Gough stood out winning three goal medals at the Munster Senior and Masters Indoor Championships at Nenagh.

In the over 70 section (no mistake) she won the shot competition with a throw of 5.84 metres. Another goal was won in the 60 metre dash in a time of 14.40 seconds and again in the 200 metre sprint in a time of 49.84 seconds.

In Camogie Ciara Jackman was one of the stand out players for Mercy College Waterford in their Junior Munster Final 2-3 to 1-2 win over Loreto from Fermoy at Passage. The Gailltir club player scored 1-0 for his side.

Staying with Camogie, Iona Heffernan was one of the stand out players for Abbey Community School in their Leinster Final win over Rochfordbridge at Fenagh in Carlow. The Ferrybank Club player hit 1-1 for her side in the game.

In Ladies Football, it was a big month on the college’s scene. The Munster Senior ‘A’ Final was an all South Tipperary affair at Clonmel where Colaiste Dun Iascaigh from Cahir beat Saint Mary’s from Carrick-on-Suir who had a number of players from Waterford in their line up. Amongst those to stand out were Geraldine Power as well as Emma and Aoife Murray.

The Munster ‘B’ Final again in Clonmel was a battle between Loreto from Clonmel and St. Augustine’s from Abbeyside.

For much of the game it looked as though the Clonmel side who had Ballymacarbry’s Lauren Guiry standing out for them were going to win, but in the end, Saint Augustine’s but in a late surge lead by Liz Devine fought back to win the game. Others to stand out for the winners in the game were Molly Curran and Bronagh Condon.

In the Munster ‘D’ Final played the same day in Glanworth, Hazelwood College from Limerick had a win over Mean Scoil Nicolas from Ring who had Dawn de Paor in fine form on the day.

But who is the first sports person to be my Female Sports Start of the month. Is it any of the above, or is there someone else.

Fifth year student at Saint Augustine’s College in Abbeyside has for some time impressed in her chosen sport.

2014 was another excellent year for Emily. She travelled with the Irish team to Rimini in Italy to take part in the World Kickboxing Championship’s.

Emily took Part in the 16 to 18 year old Weapons and overhand categories finishing in second place.

Such is Emily’s progress in her sport that she was awarded Athlete of the Year in early January. A just reward for a fine athlete, in what is a very minority sport which receives little or no recognition.

Waterford begins league campaign with a win over Wexford.

Waterford Intermediates edge out Wexford

In perfect conditions for football Waterford ladies got their Division 3 campaign in the Tesco Homegrown league off to a winning if somewhat unconvincing start with a narrow hard earned win over a resolute Wexford team in Fraher Field Dungarvan on Sunday last. From the start the Wexford ladies were leaving nobody in any doubt about their intentions to make life difficult for the home team and matched the Deise ladies all over the field in the opening encounters. In a first half where defences were on top, chances were at a premium and indeed it took 11 minutes for the first score to be registered with a wonderful well taken point by Michelle Ryan. The Ballymacarbry sharp shooter was on target again in the 17th minute when she received a quick free by team captain Linda Wall and doubled the Déise lead. These two score were amazingly to be the only two scores of the first half leaving the half time score Waterford 0-2 Wexford 0-0.

Waterford started the second half more strongly and had stretched their lead to four points with a free from Maria Delahunty in the 2nd minute and a point from Michelle Ryan in the 6th minute following a very impressive build up. It took Wexford 44 minutes to get on the scoreboard when a speculative shot from full forward Maria Byrne deceived the Waterford goalkeeper Katie Hannon and ended up in the back of the next. One minute later Wexford were on level terms as Marcella Cullen got a wonderful point to leave it Waterford 0-4 Wexford 1-1.Waterford manager Pat Sullivan rang the changes at this stage and introduced Ciara Hurley and Aileen Wall. Both players got into their stride immediately and a foul on Aileen Wall resulted in Maria Delahunty pointing a free to leave the minimum between the teams. A brilliant run from Megan Dunford set up Michelle Ryan for a point to increase the lead before Maria Byrne cut the gap with a wonderful score with 8 minutes to go. Sub Mairead Wall made an impression on her introduction setting up Michelle Ryan for yet another point in the 53rd minute. Aileen Wall got Waterford’s eight point with four minutes to go and Maria Delahunty seemed to have insured a Waterford win with a pointed free a minute later.Wexford were not finished yet and a well struck penalty by full forward Maria Byrne left only one point between the teams. The Model County pressed strongly for an equaliser but the Deise defence were resolute and disciplined and were mightily relieved when the full time whistle blew to leave Waterford narrow victors on the score line 0-9 Wexford 2-2

For Waterford it was a very nervy start to the campaign with a lot of basic handling errors and missed chances. Manager Pat Sullivan can be well pleased with the result but not with the overall standard of play. For the home team the backs were strong with Emma Murray, Caoimhe Mc Grath and Megan Dunford in particular standing out. Up front the forwards had a tough day against a strong Wexford defence, Michelle Ryan kicked some good points and Aileen Wall and newcomer Ciara Hurley made a difference when introduced.

Waterford lined out as follows: Katie Hannon, Megan Dunford, Karen Mc Grath, Emma Murray, Michelle Mc Grath, Elaine Power, Caoimhe Mc Grath, Mary Kate Morrissey, Hannah Landers, Linda Wall (capt) Margaret Revins, Maria Delahunty (0-2f) Shauna Dunphy, Sinéad Ryan and Michelle Ryan (0-6)

Subs used Ciara Hurley, Aileen Wall (0-1), Mairead Wall, Emer Scanlan and Aoife Dunne.

Waterford v Fermanagh

On Sunday next Waterford will have their second outing in the Tesco Homegrown league with a home match against Fermanagh. These two teams met in the Intermediate championship quarter final last season with Fermanagh coming out on top after a titanic struggle on the score line 3-10 to 1-11.This will be a tough encounter for the Waterford ladies as Fermanagh will be bringing an experienced team to Dungarvan for the clash and will be favourites to return home with all three points. Fermanagh are strong in all areas of the field with Kyla Mc Manus, Marcella Monahan and Tara Little starring in the back line. Caroline Little is one of the best midfielders in the country at the moment and Lynne Mc Fredricks and Sharon Little have an eye for goal upfront.

It promises to be a very entertaining game, manager Pat Sullivan will be hoping that the nervousness in the Wexford game will be gone and that the Deise girls will be up to the challenge. This will be Fermanagh’s first league game as their opening encounter against Tipperary had to be postponed. Waterford possess a nice blend of youth and experience and are well capable of producing football of the highest calibre which is what will be needed in order to beat the Fermanagh ladies. It will be close but home advantage could swing it for Waterford. Throw in, in Fraher Field on Sunday is at 2:00 with Kevin Phelan from Laois in charge of proceedings.
