Enjoyable Presentation Night For Juvenile Members

A Very Enjoyable Presentation Night For Our Juvenile Members

On Saturday Night last March 21st was presentation night for our Juvenile members who had a very successful year in 2014. Medals presented on the night were U12B League winners, U14B runners-up, U16B and U18B winners. The medals were presented on the night by the Clubs Senior Team Captain Shona Curran.

Before the presentation, club Chairperson Mary Russell welcomed all to the event and congratulated the girls on their achievements and that it was a great honour for any young girl to represent their club in Croke Park in the mini-games at the half time of the Intermediate Club Final and again to play in Thurles in a blitz later in the year. Mary thanked all mentors of the various teams for all their time and commitment that they give in the training of our girls and thanked committee members for all their work behind the scenes. Mary complimented the way that secretary Breda Geoghegan had the medals presented for the girls and thanked those who decorated the hall.

Mary then introduced Shona Curran to talk to the girls in which Shona congratulated them on their achievements and encouraged them to keep training and listen to their mentors and do what they tell them as this will improve their skills which will help them to achieve their goals.Following Shonas invigorating speech the medals were presented, followed by music by DJ Martin and some food.

Thanks to Rose O Dowd for the use of her premises for the event and for her kindness.

Minors open their Munster campaign

Waterford Minors Ladies football team open their campaign in their quest for Munster honours with an away tie against Cork on Saturday next at a Cork venue yet to be confirmed. This, on paper is a very daunting task for the Deise girls as Cork always have top class teams in all grades but the Deise girls will not be over-awed in facing the Rebelettes. The Waterford team have prepared well under the watchful eye of coach Joe Murray and manager Crohan Mc Gregor. Many of these Waterford girls have tasted both Munster and All- Ireland success in recent years and a number of them were involved in the epic Munster final under 16 clash with Cork which the Deise girls agonisingly lost by the narrowest of margins after extra time. Waterford this year will be able to call on the services of no fewer than eight players who have gained valuable experience at Intermediate level during the Tesco Homegrown league and this experience should stand in good stead to them in the minor grade.

The county’s under age teams  have got off to a good start with the under 14 ‘s and 16’s recording wins in their respective championships and the Intermediate team are unbeaten in the National League, as a result there is a great buzz about football circles in the county at the moment. The minors are up against a formidable opponent no doubt but confidence is high and the girls will have no fear of playing against Cork. It will be tough but Waterford have the capabilities of raising their game to the level of their opponents and it should be a cracker.

Under 14’s continue their unbeaten run.

Fresh from their great away win over Tipperary last month, the Waterford under14 team recorded a very impressive win against a game and spirited Limerick team in sunny Stradbally on Saturday last. Playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half Waterford quickly set out their stall and races into a commanding lead and were leading well at half time on a score line of Waterford 3-7 Limerick 0-2. In the second half Waterford continued to play well against the stiff breeze and tacked 1-4 while Limerick could only manage two more points to leave the final score Waterford 4-11 Limerick 0-4. This was a great team performance and there were many very impressive displays among the Deise girls .In the back line Rosie Landers and Mary Kate Curran snuffed out the Limerick threat. Kelly Anne Hogan controlled matters in the middle of the field while up front Sarah Lacey who scored 3-6 ,Clodagh Carroll who scored the other goal, Sheenagh Mc Guckian and Emma Flynn really caught the eye. This now leaves the girls top of the group but still must win their final group game to qualify for a Munster final.

Aileen Wall wins O’Connor Cup final with U.L.

Congratulations to Ballymacarbry and County player Aileen Wall on her wonderful performance with her college University of Limerick in winning the O’Connor Cup. Aileen was at right half forward on the UL team who defeated DCU on a scoreline of 3-16 to 0-9 and Aileen scored two points in the final.

Intermediates final home game in the league

Waterford Intermediate ladies team will play Longford in the penultimate round of the league on Sunday next in Fraher Field at 2:00.This will be the girls last game at home in what has proved to be a very successful campaign and will travel to Leitrim for the last game in three weeks time. Waterford have been very impressive throughout the league and have racked up some great scores but also have been able to dig out results in close fought games. Waterford sit proudly on top of the table with 15 points out of five games and a draw will clinch a semi final place for the Deise ladies. Longford have a tough task ahead of them as they languish at the bottom of the table and have yet to record a win. On current form Waterford should come out on top with something to spare but knowing the management and this group of players’ mentality they will be taking nothing for granted. Throw in, in Fraher Field on Sunday next is at 2:00 with Tipperary’s Keith Delahunty in charge of proceedings.

Deise Day at Punchestown

Preparations are at an advanced stage for our major fundraising event on Saturday 2nd May at the Punchestown Race Festival and in conjunction with the day a monster draw will be held on the day. Tickets are available from any committee member and members of the various football panels and are priced at €20 each or 3 for €50. Among a very impressive prize list is a Mediterranean cruise, 4 tickets for The Script in Croke Park, 2 tickets and accommodation for the All Ireland Hurling Final and 2 tickets and accommodation for the All Ireland Football Final. Don’t forget the old saying “if you’re not in you can’t win”

Club Competitions

By now, the first rounds of our club competitions at under 16 and adult 11 a side competitions have taken place. Please ensure that all results are forwarded to our fixture’s secretary Elma Uí Fhoghlú as soon as possible after the fixture is played to ensure the smooth running of the competitions.

Wins for Waterford’s Intermediate and Under 16 Ladies Footballers

Waterford Intermediate ladies continue unbeaten run
Waterford Intermediate ladies continued their unbeaten run in the Tesco Homegrown Division 3 National Football league with a laboured win over a spirited Roscommon. On the back of a number of impressive performances to date in the division, last year’s Division 4 champions took the game to Waterford from the word go and ably led by sharpshooter Jenny Downey who contributed four unanswered points in the first 18 minutes left the Roscommon girls well in front. Matters got worse for the Waterford girls when Sheila Brady got the Westerners first goal in the 19th minute. Aoife Dunne opened Waterford’s account in the 20th minute with a good point but Roscommon raised another green flag courtesy of Siobhán Tully in the 29th minute to leave nine points between the teams. Sinead Ryan converted a Waterford free on the stroke of half time to leave the score Roscommon 2-4 Waterford 0-2.
Manager Pat Sullivan rang the changes at half time making six substitutions and within minutes the Deise girls were making up for a very inept first half performance. The game was turned on its head in the space of nine minutes with what could only be called the Sinead Ryan show. Sinead pointed in the 33 minute and then struck twice for goals in the 36th minute and the 38th minute and levelled matters with a point in the 39th minute to leave it all square at 2-4 apiece. Five minutes later Aileen Wall was on hand to score a wonderful goal to put Waterford ahead for the first time in the game and give them a lead that they would not relinquish. Emma Murray got in on the scoring act, starting a move deep in her own full back line with a well taken goal in the 45th minute and her sister Aoife was on hand three minutes later to stretch Waterford’s lead to six points with a point from a difficult angle. Roscommon’s Jenny Downey got her fifth point of the match in the 50th minute but this was quickly replied to by a Maria Delahunty free .Jenny Downey kicked yet another Roscommon point in the 54th minute and Laura Mc Loone got her name on the score sheet with a point in the 55th minute before Aoife Murray finished off a brilliant move started way back in the backs by her sister Emma to put the game well out of Roscommon’s reach. To be fair to the Western girls they never gave up and Rachel Ryan and Jenny Downey were rewarded with two points in the closing minutes to leave the final score Waterford 5-6 Roscommon 2-9.
This win leaves Waterford top of the league table undefeated in five matches and the only team with a 100% record. It also ensures that Waterford should they beat or draw with Longford in their next game will have qualified for the semi final. This game is due to be played in Fraher Field in two weeks time 29th March.
Waterford lined out as follows: Katie Hannon, Nora Dunphy, Michelle Mc Grath, Mary Foley, Kate Mc Grath, Karen Mc Grath, Caoimhe Mc Grath, Mairead Power, Nicola Fennell, Dede Fahey, Maria Delahunty(0-1), Grainne Kenneally, Ciara Hurley, Sinéad Ryan(2-3) and Aoife Dunne(0-1)
Subs used:Emma Murray(1-0),Megan Dunford, Elaine Power,Mairead Wall, Aileen Wall(1-0), Aoife Murray(1-1), Michelle Ryan, Linda Wall, Lauren Mc Gregor,Liz Devine, Shauna Dunphy, Emer Scanlon and Mary Kate Morrissey
Waterford Under 16’s get off to a winning start
The Waterford under 16 ladies team travelled to Martinstown Limerick on Sunday last to play the home county in the first round of the Munster under 16 championship. This was a hard fought game played at a very fast tempo between two eager teams. Both teams took some time to settle down and traded points but Waterford got two goals in the dying moments of the first half, the first from Hannah Power(Old Parish)and the second from Kate Cliffe. Waterford opened the second half brightly with two goals from Kaiesha Tobin and the Abbie Dunphy. Limerick got on top after this and it took some heroic defending and two great saves by goalie Rosie Landers to keep the Deise girls in front. The game ebbed and flowed with some very good football being played by both teams. Kaiesha and Abbie goaled for Waterford late on in the game to put a gloss on the scoreline and leave the final score Waterford 6-5 Limerick 1-8.This was a good win for the girls but it was not as comprehensive as the score would suggest, Limerick battled hard and will have a big say yet in the destination of honours in the Munster championship. Next up for the girls is a game with Clare in two weeks time. The management would like to thank the large Waterford contingent of supporters who travelled to the game
Waterford under 14’s
Our under 14 girls team were due to play Clare at the weekend, but this game was cancelled as a mark of respect to the late Johnny Hayes (R.I.P.) vice chairman of the Clare Ladies Football County who died suddenly during the week. All at Waterford Ladies offer our sympathies to his wife and children at this sad time.

Waterford Ladies seek fifth league win in a row

Waterford Intermediate Ladies face Roscommon
Waterford Intermediate ladies hope to continue their 100% record in the Tesco Homegrown National Football league with a tricky home encounter against Roscommon. Roscommon who were Division 4 champions last year and have made an excellent start to their league campaign will provide stiff opposition for the Deise ladies. Roscommon who reached THE Intermediate championship semi finals last year have had impressive wins over Sligo Tipperary and Longford to date and their only defeat came against Leitrim who jointly top the table with the Waterford ladies.

This should be a close game, both teams have been very impressive to date and victory for the Deise girls should ensure a league semi final place with two rounds to go. Manager Pat Sullivan is very pleased with performances to date but is aware that Roscommon present another learning curve for the team. It will be close but Waterford should have the firepower up front to win the match. Throw-In, in Fraher Field on Sunday next is at 2:00 with Jonathon Murphy in charge of proceedings.

Under 14 and 16 teams in action in Munster championship
Saturday next will be a busy day for the underage Deise ladies with two teams in action on Saturday, our under 14 team will have a home tie with Clare in Stradbally, while our under 16 team open their Munster campaign with an away game in Limerick. The under 14 games pits the two teams that won their opening games in this year’s championship. Waterford overcame Tipperary by four points while Clare beat Limerick in a thrilling encounter by a single point. Under age games are difficult to predict and both teams will be brimming in confidence after their first round exploits. This game will be close and there will not be much between the teams at the final whistle, but the Deise should prevail.

The Under 16 team open their campaign with a tricky away match against Limerick. This will be a good game of football and the result will go down to the wire. These two teams had two titanic battles against each other when they met in the under 14 championship two years ago. Limerick coming back from eight points down to win a thriller in Stradbally before the Deise turned the tables on the Treatysiders in the Munster Final. Waterford have prepared well under the astute eye of manager Johnny Troy and are under no illusions of the task facing them on Saturday next. Like the under 14 match this will be close and Waterford would be delighted to scrape home by a point or two.

New President for Ladies Football
Marie Hickey from Laois has been inaugurated as President of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association at Congress held in Ennis last weekend, we wish her all the best in her new position and thank outgoing president Pat Quill for his wonderful commitment to Ladies Football during his term of office.

Female Sports Star of the Month for February 2015

Sometimes for women involved in sport, be it in a team sport or an individual sport, they find it very hard to get coverage in the media for what they are trying to do.

Sometimes, it’s very easy to put the blame for this on editors in the written and spoken media, but this is unfair, as there are restrictions on the amount of space they can give to each sport, and to be fair to them, they will always give the most coverage to the more popular sports.

It also has to be remembered that editors can only give space to a sport if they are made aware about it.

The offer was made some time back to those involved in women’s sports to have their sport promoted here. It does not matter what the sport is. It does not matter at what level of competition it is. If you are involved in Women’s sports and want coverage, email me the details (keanethomas@eircom.net) and they will be uploaded. To get extra promotion, all that has to be done then is to like and share when you see something pop up on your Twitter or Facebook pages.

In January of this year, something new was started here.

It was decided to pick one female or a female team out that impressed in one way or another and name them as the player or the team of the month.

Dungarvan’s Emily Foley was the first winner for her achievements in kick boxing. Another month has ended and in the February of 2015 there were many impressive performers, some of whom are mentioned here. At the end of the piece, the monthly winner will be announced.

It must be remembered that there is no prize out of winning, apart from getting a mention from me. What more would you want LOL.

Maxol WIT Wildcats may not have won any games in the league in February loosing twice to Meteors, as well as Montenotte and Killester, but they had one player who stood out with some impressive performances.

Helena Rohan hit 21 points against Killester, 12 against Montenotte and 34 in her sides two games against Meteors and was well up there with teams further up the league when it came to challenging for the top scorer for the month.

Niamh Briggs in Rugby was named as Captain of the Irish team this year and has put in some solid performances.

In her first six-nations game as captain she scored ten points against Italy, a try, conversion and penalty while in the same game another Waterford lady Fiona O’Brien made her Irish Debut coming on a sub and again impressed.

Waterford at the end of February sit top of Division three of the Ladies National Football League with four wins from four games.

In these games, Waterford had a number of good performers, with Maria Delahunty constantly in front of the oppositions goal since she rejoined the panel earlier this year.

For the game of Camogie, the month of February was again a great month for the game.

Lismore’s Senior Camogie team have to get a mention for their performance in the All-Ireland semi final against Galway side Oranmore Maree, and more over for the way they reacted to getting their quota of players very harshly cut at the start of the second half.

WIT in February won a sixth Ashbourne Cup Final in seven years which is a remarkable achievement. In the panel were three Waterford players - Valerie O’Brien, Vikki Falconer who captained the side and Trish Jackman who was named as the player of the final. On the Mary I side that won the Purcell Cup after a replay were Fiona Morrissey and Jenny McCarthy while Deirdre Brennan and Becky Kavanagh were with the Runners-Up – DIT. Johnanna Houlihan, Niamh Rockett and Sarah Fenton were part of sides beaten in semi finals over the weekend.

Staying with Camogie, Waterford has a new manager for the counties Intermediate team this year in Sean Fleming. He has brought some of the best young players that have impressed at under 16 and minor levels into the panel this year and they helped the side make a winning start to this year’s league, beating Tipperary at the WIT Sports Campus in Carriganore. Beth Carton in that game hit six points for Waterford and also played a major roll for the County Minor side in their games played this year.

Kaeisha Tobin also had a very impressive performance for the County under 16 side in their narrow defeat to Limerick in the Munster Championship recently. The versatile Dungarvan hit 3-3 for the side in the game played at Ballybrown.

And finally in Camogie, the Mercy Secondary School in Waterford qualified for the All-Ireland Junior Final recently following a brilliant 5-5 to 2-7 win over Chríost Rí from Portlaoise, Gailltir’s Ciara Jackman proving to be one of their stand out players on the day.

WIT advanced to the final of the WSCAI League after a 6-0 win over NUIG at the WIT Sports Campus at Carriganore. Ciara Rossiter put in a player of the match performance for the Waterford College playing in the middle of the field and rounded off her performance by scoring two goals towards the end of the game.

Taekwondo is a sport many have heard about but see get very little coverage.

The 16th Irish National Open Championships were held recently in Dublin and for Dungarvan’s Grainne Curran they proved very fruitful as she returned home with two medals, a bronze in the first degree female patterns competition and gold in the        -50kg female sparring competition.

In athletics West Waterford A.C.’s Lisa Houlihan took part in the Irish University Indoor Championships in Athlone recently. The Maynooth student took part in the Pole Vault competition and returned home from the competition with a Gold Medal.

The Ard Scoil Na Déise Minor Cross Country team had an excellent result recently at the Munster Cross Country Championships at Cork Institute of Technology.

The team of Lucy Holmes, Sarah Lacey, Aoife Dee, Anne McGrath, Kate Hickey, Orla Keane and Talithakoumi Macauley ran an excellent race and finished as a team in fifth place against very strong opposition.
However, each month there can only be one winner, and while there is some impressive performers named above, it is hard to go beyond Kelly Proper as the overall best performer in the month of February.

She took part in a number of different competitions including the AAI Indoor Games in Athone where she won the Long Jump with a leap of 6.25 metres and the 200 metre sprint in a time of 23.76 seconds.

She also took part in the British Indoor Championships in Sheffield and finished fifth in the Long Jump with a leap of 6.21 metres.

Back in Athlone at the National Indoor Championships, the Ferrybank Athlete won three golds to take her number of National Titles won to 19.

The first of her golds was won in the Long Jump in a leap of 6.22 metres. The 60 metre dash was won in a time of 7.46 seconds and the 200 metre final was won in a time of 23.27 seconds.

The Ferrybank Athlete to date has had a marvelous career, both indoor and outdoor and surly many more titles will come her way in the years ahead.

Waterford Intermediate ladies continue unbeaten run

Waterford Intermediate ladies continue unbeaten run

Waterford intermediate ladies football team made it four wins out of four matches when they defeated Tipperary in Ardfinnan in the Tesco Home Grown Division 3 National League on Sunday last. Lining out with nine changes in personnel from their last victory against Fermanagh, Waterford were under sustained Tipperary pressure from the start. Star performer on the day Gillian O Brien gave Tipperary the lead on 5 minutes but the Deise girls quickly equalised with a free from Sinead Ryan before Shauna Dunphy kicked a great point to leave the Deise a point ahead. Playing on her home pitch Laura Dillon gave Tipperary the lead once again with a well taken goal in the 14th minute. Maria Delahunty kicked a free in the 18th minute and then added a point from play in the 19th to leave it Tipperary 1-2 Waterford 0-4.Aoife Ryan from Cappawhite got Tipp’s second goal in the 21st minute but Dungarvan club mates Lauren Mc Gregor and Ciara Hurley raised white flags for the Deise while Gillian O Brien added a well taken point to leave the half time score Tipperary 2-4 Waterford 0-6.

Tipperary started the second half in whirlwind fashion with a goal from Aoife Ryan but this was quickly cancelled out as from the kickout a passing movement the length of the field resulted in Lauren Mc Gregor giving the Tipperary goalie no chance for Waterford’s first goal. Maria Delahunty pointed a free in the 4th minute but this was quickly answered by a Tipperary point one minute later. This was to prove to be Tipperary’s last score of the match and the Waterford forwards took over Aileen Wall pointed in the 6th minute to leave three between the teams. Maria Delahunty narrowed the gap with her fourth point of the game. Ciara Hurley struck again in the 13th minute and it was all square in the 19th minute when Sinead Ryan struck with a great point to leave it Waterford 1-11 Tipperary 3-5.Michelle Ryan who came on as a sub for Lauren Mc Gregor put Waterford in front with a goal and another sub Dede Fahey completed the scoring with a point in the 52th minute. The game petered out from this to the finish but the Deise girls were well in control and picked up another three league points to sit on top of the table with Leitrim. Final Score Waterford 2-12 Tipperary 3-5

Manager Pat Sullivan was very pleased with the manner of the win and was delighted with the performances of all the players. The only down point from a Waterford perspective was that goalie Clodagh Walsh suffered a serious injury making a great save and all involved in Waterford Ladies Football wish her a speedy recovery. Waterford now move forward to a home tie with Roscommon in two weeks time Sunday 15th March.

Waterford lined out as follows: Clodagh Walsh, Mary Foley, Karen McGrath, Kate McGrath, Michelle McGrath, Elaine Power, Emer Scanlon, Mary Kate Morrissey, Nicola Fennell, Ciara Hurley (0-2), Maria Delahunty (0-4), Aileen Wall (0-1), Lauren McGregor (1-1), Sinéad Ryan (0-2) Shauna Dunphy (0-1). Subs used: Linda Wall, Mairead Wall, Michelle Ryan (1-0), Aoife Murray, Dede Fahey (0-1), Katie Hannon

Waterford under 14’s edge out Tipperary in a thriller

Waterford opened the defence of their Munster title in Bansha on Saturday last with a hard fought four point victory over an excellent Tipperary team. Facing a strong wind in the first half Waterford quickly found themselves four points down before Dungarvan’s Sarah Lacey opened the Deise account in the 14th minute. Midfielder Kelly Anne Hogan kicked two good points to narrow the gap before Keeley Corbett Barry got a vital goal to put the Deise team ahead at half time by a point on the scoreline Waterford 1-4 Tipperary 0-6.The Deise girls were caught napping early in the second half when Tipperary’s top forward Angela Mc Guckian raised two green flags for the Premier county. Waterford quickly hit back with two points from Stradbally’s Sheena Mc Guckian to level matters in the 6th minutes. It was nip and tuck all the way after this Sheena Mc Guckian netted a goal and got two wonderful points to put the Deise back in front but no to be outdone Angela Mc Guckian got her third goal and the Premier county had their noses in front again with six minutes to go. Waterford rallied and Sarah Lacey kicked the equaliser before super sub Maeve Daly crashed the ball to the Tipp net with time running out, Tipperary tried in vain in the closing minutes to get the equaliser but Waterford held firm and Annie Fitzgerald kicked Waterford’s final point deep into injury time to leave the final score Waterford 3-11 Tipperary 3-7.This was a good win for the girls against a strong Tipperary team who will have a big say in the championship. Waterford move forward with a clash with Clare on the 14th March.

Waterford lined out as follows: Megan Foran; Emma Flynn, Mary Kate Curran, Carly Dunford; Aoife Kennedy, Rosie Landers, Roisin Dunphy; Kelly Anne Hogan, Clodagh Carroll, Keeley Corbett Barry, Annie Fitzgerald, Emily O’Mahoney; Sarah Lacey, Sheena McGuckian, Saoirse Moyaheen
