Waterford Under 14 ladies come up short in thriller

In a thrilling game of football played in sunny Stradbally on Sunday last, Waterford under 14 ladies narrowly failed to annex the Munster title for the fourth year in a row when they suffered a heart breaking defeat to Tipperary in Extra Time. This has been the third meeting of these two wonderful teams in the championship and each game served up a thriller. Following the drawn Munster final two weeks ago in Clonmel the two teams gave us a game to remember and the Deise ladies were in hard luck not to come up the elusive point that would have drawn the game and brought it to a second replay.

Tipperary opened in whirl wind fashion and had a goal and two points on the board before Waterford woke up and began to play the football that they are capable of. Ruth Butler got Tipp’s opening goal with a surging run through the heart of the Waterford defence and an unstoppable shot which gave Waterford goalie Megan Foran no chance. Waterford began to claw their way back into the match with a point from Sarah Lacey and two from Annie Fitzgerald left Tipperary two points ahead. Dungarvan’s Sarah Lacey turned the game on its head in the 20th minute when a wonderful pass from Aoife Kennedy set her up to bury the ball past Tipp goalie Nicola O Dwyer. Sarah was on hand two minutes later with a speculative lob from 25 metres completely deceived the keeper and put Waterford four points ahead. Tipp  not to be outdone however replied with a second goal of their own when centre forward Eva Fennessey raised a green flag to leave the bare minimum between the teams at half time. Waterford 2-3 Tipperary 2-2.

Tipperary went into an early lead in the second half but were pulled back to parity with another Sarah Lacey point. Kelly Anne Hogan raised a huge cheer in the 40th minute when the Ballymac girl made no mistake and rifled the ball to the net. Clodagh Carroll put four points between the teams before the Tipperary substitute Angela Mc Guigan scored a free. Keeley Corbett Barry put four between the teams once again as the clock ticked down but the game was to have yet another twist when Tipperary centre back Caitlin Kennedy got the all important goal to leave them trailing by just a point  well into injury time, in the last attack of the game Angela Mc Guigan kept her composure to slot over the equalising point to tie the game at three goals and seven points each.

In the first period of extra time exchanges were tight and tense, Annie Fitzgerald kicked two wonderful points and Kelly Anne Hogan raised the cheers on the Waterford side with a point to leave three between the teams. Eva Fennessy kicked a point for Tipp to narrow the gap at half time in extra time. In the second half of extra time Fennessy and Mary Kate Curran exchanged points to still leave two between the teams before Alice Ryan got the all important Tipp goal to edge the Premier County back in front. Keeley Corbett Barry got a point back for Waterford but the team were to come up short when the referee inexplicably blew the whistle with Waterford in the middle of a very promising attack which could have led to a deserved equaliser but it was not to be.

This team and its management deserve great credit for the effort they put in. Despite the heat and glorious sunshine not one player from either side went down with cramp and the game was played in a very sporting manner. Waterford deserved a draw but will rue the many missed chances in the opening half. Well done girls on a wonderful display of football.

Lismore claim first major piece of Silverware in 2015.

The Premium Butchers Senior League 2015

Lismore 1-10   Cappoquin 0-09

It what transpired to be a farly evenly matched affair Lismore and Cappoquin served up a very entertaining game in this local Derby played in Tallow GAA Field on Saturday night last May 16th in The Premium Butcher Senior League final. Lismore were aiming to recapture The Denny Buckley Cup after a years absence when St. Annes had claimed it from them in 2014. The Denny Buckley Cup is of great sentimental value to Lismore as the family of the late Denny Buckley had donated the senor League Cup four years ago and Dennys daughter Laura is a player on the Lismore Team.

Throw in for the game was at six o clock in Tallow GAA field and conditions were perfect for a great game of camogie. From the throw-in both teams showed steel dermination to win this match however it was Cappoquin who scored the first point courtesy of Aisling Power from a free two minutes into the game. The Lismore girls gathered momentum and two minutes later a point from Nicola Morrissey from play gave the Lismore girls confidence and in the next ten minutes three points for the black and amber side was scored from play from Laura Buckley, Aoife Hannon and Nicola Morrissey.

Caitriona McGlone who was a  threat on the Cappoquin back line and was putting the Cappoquin backs under severe pressure. A ball that was caught by youngster Emma Power which she lobbed  into the awaiting McGlone in which she made no mistake and headed straight for goal and hit the back of the Cappoquin net. Score with fifteen minutes gone was Lismore 1-4 Cappoquin 0-1. Cappoquins Lorraine Bray scored their second point of the half on the nineteenth minute but was counteracted a minute later when Aoife Hannon scored for Lismore her second point of the day. Lismore were on top and Cappoquin found it hard to contain the Lismore pressure. Aoife Hannon pointed from a free on the twenty third minute and Cappoquins Carole McCarthy pointed on the twenty fifth from a free to give Cappoquin their third point of the day. Lismore finished the half with two more points courtesy of Caithriona Mc Glone and Aoife Hannon. Half time score Lismore 1-08 Cappoquin 0-03.

The tides were to turn in the second half and if the first half belonged to Lismore, it was Cappoquin who proved to be the strongest in the second half keeping Lismore to a 0-2 score in this half.  With Caithriona McGlone being called ashore for the second half, she was replaced by Ruth Geoghegan. Cappoquins Aisling Power once again opened the half with a point from play on the tthirty third minute and duly converted a free on the thirty sixth minute.

Cappoquin were now on top and had the Lismore back line under pressure, causing them to foul the speedy Cappoquin forwards in their advancements to the Lismore goal mouth. Carole McCarthy and Aisling Power  converted 4 points between them in the next fifteen minutes. With five minutes remaining the score read Lismore 1-8 Cappoquin 0-9, things looked very dangerous for Lismore who badly needed a score, this did come on the twenty sixth minute when Ruth Geoghegan grabbed the ball in the air and put it over to put three points between the sides. Cappoquin kept putting pressure on the Lismore side, but Lismore's determination did not relent to the pressure and held Cappoquin scoreless for the remaining minutes of the game with Aoife Hannon getting the insurance point in the dying minutes leaving the score reading Lismore 1-10 Cappoquin 0-09.

Gael Linn 2015 - Munster reach final

Waterford were very well represented on the 2015 Interprovincial Junior Competition which took place today in Portlaoise, with Beth Carton, Charlotte Raher, Lorraine Bray and Valerie O Brien all part of the Munster set up.  The current Intermediate Manager, Sean Fleming, was also a part of the management team.  The team had a great win over Connacht in the semi-final with our own Beth Carton playing a pivotal role in the game.

The Final was dominated by the Down duo of Niamh Mallon and Catherine McGourty as Ulster defeated Munster in the Interprovincial junior camogie title.  Catherine McGourty was subsequently named 'Player of the Tournament'

The Ulster team beat Leinster in a cracking and tense semi-final at the Laois venue although Ulster were down a point, they scored a brace of points to steady the ship and eventually won by a margin of 4.

Having beaten Connaught by the minimum, Munster provided the opposition in the final .  With Waterford's Beth Carton in incredible form, Munster got off to the perfect start in the decider, and led by 1-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes the impact of McGourty started to take hold and following her first goal, Ulster now only trailed by just 1-6 to 1-3 having played against a very strong wind.  The second half was all Ulster's who used the elements to their advantage and it was Niamh Mallon who inflicted the critical blows as she put point after point over the bar.  Final score was Ulster 3-15 to Munster 1-10

Mixed results for Waterford Ladies sides.

Last gasp Tipp goal denies Waterford under 14s victory

A last gasp goal scored by Caitlin Kennedy in the Munster B under 14 ladies final ensured that the two teams will have to meet again after a pulsating clash ended level in Clonmel on Thursday night last. When the teams met previously in the championship there was little to separate the teams but the Deise girls did just enough to emerge victors on that day. This game was to prove no different with the teams level on six occasions. Points were traded all the way through and the teams went in at the interval on six points apiece. The Waterford points being shared by Sheena Mc Guckian and Sarah Lacey. In the second half Waterford got off to a good start with points from Sarah Lacey ,Sheena Mc Guckian and substitute Aoife Fitzgerald to leave Waterford three points ahead entering added on time and holding on, but Caitlin Kennedy intervened and got the all important equalising goal and ensured that the teams will have to do battle again. Final Score Waterford 0-11 Tipperary 1-8.

Waterford Under 16s claim Munster title

In a thrilling Munster final played in very windy conditions in Kilmacthomas on Sunday last. Waterford ladies overcame a resolute Tipperary team to claim the title on a five point margin. Playing into the strong wind in the first half Waterford ably led by captain Chloe Fennell took the Tipperary team by surprise with an exhibition of scores with goals from Chloe Fennell and two from Abi Dunphy along with three points from Kaiesha Tobin to leave the Deise girls ahead at half time on a score line Waterford 3-5 Tipperary 1-2.

The second half proved to be a different story however as the Tipp girls, led by Kate Davey quickly wiped out Waterford’s lead to score 2 goals and four points with Waterford’s only answer a point by Abi Dunphy. Tipp went ahead for the first time on 42 minutes with a point but a point from Abbie Dalton a goal from Abi Dunphy, a point from Chloe Fennell and a pointed free from Kaiesha Tobin left Waterford five ahead. The Deise girls were rocked back with a Tipperary goal and a sin binning which left Tipp with a numerical advantage for the rest of the game, but the girls dug deep and three points from Katie Duggan Sullivan, Kaiesha Tobin and Abbie Dalton and some heroic defending left Johnny Troy’s charges in front and Munster champions at the final whistle on the score line Waterford 4-12 Tipperary 4-7

Disappointment for Intermediates in League Final

Waterford’s intermediate ladies football team’s unbeaten record in division 3 of the Tesco Homegrown league came to a halt when they were beaten by Sligo in Parnell Park on a scoreline of  2-12 to 2-8. Waterford started the game very brightly and led with a point from Grainne Kenneally in the second minute which was cancelled out by Katie Walsh in the 4th Waterford hit a purple patch between the 6th and the 18th minutes with a goal and a point by Sinead Ryan and a point by Aileen Wall left the Deise five points up. It was to get better for the girls when Wall and Ryan combined and a defence splitting pass from Aileen Wall to Sinead resulted in the full forward rounding the goalkeeper and finishing the ball to the net. At this stage Waterford were well on top with the backs patiently playing the ball out of defence and working for each other. Sligo started to get a grip on the game and points from Karen Moloney, Katie Walsh and Stephanie O Reilly brought the Connacht girls back into the game. The game was turned on its head in the 27th minute with a very harsh decision by the referee gifted Sligo a penalty and a yellow card for Emma Murray. Katie Walsh despatched the penalty to bring Sligo back into the game. On the stroke of half time Aileen Wall scored a fine point to leave the half time score Waterford 2-4 Sligo 1-4.

Waterford having been so economical in the first half, having only kicked one wide, started the second half in wasteful fashion with three wides in the first three minutes. This energised Sligo and a point from Sarah Reynolds and a goal from full forward Katie Walsh left the Yeats County up by a point in the 8th minute. Sligo stretched their lead in the 10th minute with a point from Stephanie O Reilly and Katie Walsh kicked another one in the 11th minute to stretch the margin to three. Waterford’s day went from bad to worse when Grainne Kenneally was sin binned for an innocuous looking tackle. Michelle Ryan cut the deficit with a well taken point. Sligo weathered the storm and sub Jacqui Mulligan and Katie Walsh scored points to extend the lead to five. Sinead Ryan and Maria Delahunty gave Waterford hope with two points. Delahunty scoring a free for a foul on Aileen Wall who was hauled down with a clear goal chance and no card resulted. Waterford’s misery was compounded a minute later when Emma Murray received a second yellow card in a decision that the referee clearly got very wrong. The young Comeragh Rangers girl contested the ball in the air, with her eyes totally focussed on the ball, with the Sligo half forward. The referee called Emma Murray back and sent her off to the amazement of almost everyone who was there. Sinead Ryan pointed a free in the 28th minute but Sligo came back and midfielder Bernice Byrne fisted over a point to ensure that the league title was going back West.

While the better team won on the day this was a bitter pill for Waterford ladies to swallow. Their league form up to Saturday has been excellent but a below par performance means that Waterford languish in Division 3 for another season, despite getting six more league points than Sligo and scoring 26 goals in the divisional stage of the League. Next up for the girls is a defence of their Munster Intermediate crown and the thoughts of the task ahead and facing Division 4 league champions Limerick in the first round should help the girls to put this defeat very much behind them.

Who is the Stand out performer when it comes to women in sport in Waterford during April?

We’ve entered another new month, so it is time once more to name some female’s involved in sport that impressed be it on or off the field of play in the previous month and to name then as an unofficial female sports star of the month.

It is important to note the person named here might not be exactly the name that won the highest honours but someone that in their own way helped to promote women’s sport or helped their team to achieve something.

As is always pointed out each month, there is nothing to be got from being named as the overall monthly winner here, apart from the fact that they are getting the chance to promote their chosen sport and to maybe get some new people involved.

April was a relatively quiet month when it comes to women’s sport. Maybe there is a good reason for this. Lots of sports are run over the winter months and their season is coming to an end or has come to an end. The school’s were also closed for a considerable part of the month due to the Easter Holiday’s while many school’s competitions have drawn to a close as the state exams draw near.

In Basketball a team from the Presentation Secondary School in Waterford travelled to the continent to take part in a schools competition and while they finished down the pecking order the girls that were part of the panel did themselves, their school and the country whom they were representing proud.

Ardscoil na Déise had a team of five first year students at the East Munster Track and Field Championships at the end of the month in Templemore. Lucy Holmes finished 5th in the 800m race. Anne McGrath finished second in the heats of the 100m competition which qualified her for the final but narrowly missed out on a medal. Aoife Dee and Orla Keane also took part and gave very good accounts of themselves in the shot put competition. The four took part in the relays and put in a great performance where they finished third which qualifies them for the Munster Finals later this month in Cork.

Most of the action in the past month when it comes to women’s sports centred round Ladies Football and Camogie.

First up it would be very wrong not to congratulate the Waterford Intermediate Camogie and Ladies Football teams on reaching National League Finals during the month of April. The Camogie team have already played their final and if you don’t know how they got on you can read a report here. http://thomaskeane1973.blogspot.ie/2015/05/magnificent-waterford-ladies-win-league.html The Footballers are in action on Saturday in Dublin against Sligo at Parnell Park. More about that game can be found later in the week, so keep an eye on thomaskeane1973 on both Facebook and Twitter. If you know anyone interested in sport why not let them know about the sites and get them to like and follow the pages.

Waterford’s under 14 Ladies Football Team played Kerry in the ‘A’ Grade Munster Semi Final recently and had a excellent win. Waterford have put together another very good team at this grade this year and some of the players to keep an eye out for are Annie Fitzgerald who hit three goals against the Kingdom, Sarah Lacey who him 1-3, Sheenagh McGuckian, Rosie Landers, Mary-Kate Curran, Keeley Corbett-Barry and Jade Queally.

In the minor grade this year Waterford have also put together a good team and they too beat Kerry recently. The team is full of players with experience like Lauren Guiry, Emma and Aoife Murray and Lauren McGregor.

Waterford’s Intermediate team beat Roscommon at Nenagh to qualify for the League Final on Saturday. The team has a nice mix of youth and experience with the likes of Sinead Ryan, Grainne Kenneally, Maria Delahunty, Michelle Ryan, Elaine Power as well as Karen and Michelle McGrath playing vital parts.

In Camogie Waterford qualified for their recent final with Laois after a win over Kildare. Trish Jackman was their top scorer on the day, finishing with nine points but again they had plenty of other hero’s in the likes of Deirdre Brennan, Claire Whyte, Jenny Simpson, Lorraine Bray, Molly Curran and Dawn Power.

In Camogie, the Gailltir Club also were in the news of late. They recently won the County Féile Final for the third year in a row, beating De La Salle in the final at Bushy Park. In the last two years the girls from the Barony after winning the competition locally went on to win the National Division two final. This year however, things are a little different, as Gailltir will be representing Waterford in a Division one Regional Competition, while De La Salle will travel to Ulster to represent the county in the Division two grade at the National Competition.

So it is now time to name this months overall winner. Is it someone named already or is it someone to be named yet. Like in previous months, the winner has yet to get a mention.

This months winner comes from the Counties Intermediate Ladies Football team, with the player chosen being Aileen Wall for her performance against Roscommon.

The Ballymacarbry player over the past few years is a regular in the county team but this year with over 30 in the panel and every player getting their chance to show what they can do to the new management team in charge this year, the Ballymacarbry player has had to settle for a place on the bench for much of the games from the off this year but has come on and played a major roll in games that were at times tight.

Aileen started the game against Roscommon in Nenagh and put in a player of the Match performance kicking five points in a 18 point win. It was not only at scoring that she impressed as many at the game were very impressed with her pace and was involved in a lot of what Waterford did on the day.

Waterford Ladies Footballers in League Final

On Saturday next Waterford Ladies footballers make the trek to Parnell Park to take on Sligo in the final of the Tesco Homegrown Division 3 league and so hope to emulate their Camogie and Hurling counterparts in annexing League titles. Waterford to date have been very impressive winning all their group games and disposing of Roscommon in clinical fashion in the semi final in Nenagh two weeks ago. Waterford and Sligo met already in the league in February in Fraher Field and Waterford ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of Waterford 5-13 to Sligo’s 0-5.On this scoreline Waterford appear to hold all the aces but in that fixture Waterford only led by five points at half time but a scoring blitz in the first ten minutes zapped the Sligo confidence and Waterford went on to record a fine victory. Sligo possess many fine footballers and in Noelle Gormley they have an excellent goalie and Gráinne Carty, Katie Walsh and Stephanie O Reilly are well able to take their scores. It is also worth noting that Sligo have go undefeated since that Waterford game and had a notable victory over a fancied Leitrim team in the semi final.

The Waterford team have been playing a wonderful game of possession football, working the ball out of defence, creating overlaps and finishing with deadly accuracy. There is a good mixture of youth and experience in the squad and the whole panel of players are working well with a very healthy competition for places. The back line powered by Karen and Michelle Mc Grath are very strong and in Linda Wall, Megan Dunford, Katie Murray and Elaine Power they possess players who are always looking to go forward and set up attacks. The Ryan sisters Michelle and Sinead are pivotal in attack with Sinead racking up some very impressive score lines in recent matches. Aileen Wall is always very dangerous in and around the goal and the likes of Maria Delahunty and Aoife Murray have an eye for the goal also.

While Waterford seem to have the upper hand it must be noted that Sligo defeated Waterford by six points in last year’s campaign and pushed eventual Intermediate champions Down all the way in the championship. Waterford reached this stage of the league last year and went down after a gallant effort to Armagh. The memory of that loss will no doubt spur Waterford on to complete the job and the management team led by Pat Sullivan will have the girls well prepared for Saturday’s encounter. Hopefully league victories are like buses, you don’t see one for ages and suddenly three come along in a row!!  Waterford should have too much power for Sligo and with a little luck and no small amount of skill and determination Linda Wall should be bringing a third league cup back to the Déise next Saturday. Throw in, in Parnell Park is at 12:15 with Jonathan Murphy in charge of proceedings.

Under 14’s effort at Munster A glory falls short

Waterford under 14 girls team came up short in their effort to win the Munster A championship for the first time since 1998 when on Saturday last they were beaten by a much stronger Cork team in Castletownroche in testing weather conditions. The girls now play Tipperary in the B final which is due to be played on Thursday night next May 7th at a venue to be confirmed. While the girls are disappointed to lose the A final they are a very resilient and dedicated group of players and Ciara Dunphy and her management team will have them well primed for the final against a very good Tipperary team.

Minors march on in the Munster Championship

Our minor ladies team had a convincing win against Clare on Wednesday night last in Dromtarriffe Co. Cork in the first round of the Munster championship. From the outset the girls were on top and one of the highlights of the night was the sharp shooting of the forwards where Ciara Hurley top scored with two goals and five points. The girls now meet Limerick in the Munster Semi Final at a Waterford venue on May 12th

Under 16 Munster Final

Not to be outdone our Under 16 panel have also qualified for a Munster Final and will play Tipperary on Sunday next May 10th at a venue to be confirmed. This will be a tough clash as both teams have recorded wins over Limerick and Clare and will be very close.

Deise Day at Punchestown

A sincere thank you, to all who made Deise Day such a wonderful success. Despite the weather it was a fantastic occasion and all who attended were very complimentary of the excellent standard of organisation that went into making the day the great success that it was. A well done to all concerned but especially to Edel Curry and Lisa Cronin for the Trojan work that they put in to making the day a wonderful success.
