"It wasn't to Be"

Under very difficult conditions in Coralstown Kinnegad on Sunday last it was a very determined Athenry team that came out as victors in the AIB Intermediate Club Semi Final propelled by the vastly experienced trio of Therese Maher, Jessica Gill and Rebecca Glynn. They led by 0-5 to 0-2 at half time, Maher scoring four points (three from frees) and Gill the other.

Lismore found it very difficult to penetrate the very strong Athenry defence and were quick to crowd out the speedy Caithriona McGlone when she was about to get possession. The Lismore defence stood equally strong from the Athenry attack and kept a clean sheet for the game. But Lismore found it very hard to get the ball beyond their half forward line thus finding it hard to come by a score

Nicola Morrissey got Lismore off the mark at the end of the fourteenth minute and Caitriona McGlone doubled their tally six minutes later but they failed to score again, while Niamh Hannon (two) and Noreen Coen pointed to ensure Athenry the prized victory. It wasn’t to be for the Lismore girls on the day.

All in Lismore Camogie are very proud of the girls and their team management in their exploits and have achieved quiet allot winning the County "The Denny Buckley Cup"  league, The County Championship V Gaultier and the Munster Final V Corks Newcestown which was a great achievement after being beaten in both League and County the year previous.

Déise Ladies Defeated In League Opener

Our senior ladies football team had a disappointing opening to their division 2 league, away to Tyrone Ladies and losing on a score line of 4-11 to 2-11. The game was due to be played in Drumragh GAA club however due to poor weather conditions and heavy rain this pitch was deemed unplayable and was moved to the Tyrone Centre of Excellence on an all-weather pitch.

A youthful team lined out on the day and several made their senior debut including Kate and Aisling Hahessey, Laura Cusack, Sally Kelly and Keeley Corbett Barry. The opening five minutes saw two quick points by Tyrone as the Déise girls got off to a slow start. The first Waterford point came from the left leg of Róisín Tobin as the Déise girls found their feet and settled into the game. A great move started in the back line which was worked up the field, ending up with Eimear Fennell who stuck it in the back of the Tyrone net after a lovely pass by Aileen Wall. Sinead Ryan who was fantastic on frees all day then scored her first point of three in the first half. Tyrone had a few goal chances but were denied by Sally Kelly who made a few great saves. Megan Dunford was also very impressive on the day making many selfless runs and winning important frees. Róisín Tobin and Aileen Wall finished Waterford’s scoring in the first half which left Waterford with a one point lead going into the second half on a score line of 1-6 to 1-5.

The second half started with high intensity with both teams exchanging points from placed balls. We were then awarded a penalty as Katie Murray was pulled down in the square however the Tyrone goalie got a touch to Eimear Fennell’s shot and denied the Déise girls a goal. The experienced Michelle Ryan was then introduced and within a minute she had the ball batted to the back of the net giving Waterford a two point lead. Tyrone started to put pressure on the Déise defence and attacked with speed which resulted in two quick goals. A few substitutions were made but Tyrone had built momentum and even though the Déise girls worked tirelessly they couldn’t bridge the gap. Liz Devine finished the scoring with a great point but it was too late and the scoreboard finished with Tyrone taking the three points.

Waterford will play their second League match at home to Clare in Carriganore, WIT sports campus this Saturday 3rd February TBC.

Waterford Team: Sally Kelly, Rebecca Casey, Michelle McGrath, Kate Hahessey, Laura Cusack, Emma Murray, Megan Dunford, Mairéad Wall, Aisling Hahessey, Róisín Tobin, Keeley Corbett Barry, Katie Murray, Sinéad Ryan, Eimear Fennell, Aileen Wall. Subs used: Karen McGrath for Laura Cusack, Michelle Ryan for Keeley Corbett Barry, Lauren McGregor for Róisín Tobin, Kelly Ann for Aisling Hahessey, Geraldine Power for Eimear Fennell, Liz Devine for Aileen Wall.

Historical Win for Ursuline Waterford

On Saturday last a historical meeting of Ursuline Thurles and Ursuline Waterford took place in WIT Campus, Carriganore. This was Ursuline Waterford third year playing in the junior competition.

Waterford won the toss and opted to play against a very stiff breeze.  The visitors threatened an upset with a bright start.  Thurles were first off the block with a goal in the first minute of the game from Eimear Heffernan.  Thurles continued their scoring spree and made use of the strong breeze that supported them in the first half.  Waterford battled hard but found it hard to find accuracy with a number of wides. On the fifteenth minutes Thurles were two goals ahead on a score line of 2-01 to Waterford only point coming from full forward Aleisha Flynn. Up to this point Thurles were very dominant. However, the Waterford Defence grew in strength as the half progressed and refused to give up. Ursuline Waterford staged a recovery with some fine points from Aoife Fitzgerald, Clodagh Carroll, and Abby Flynn in the last ten minutes of the first half.  Waterford defence battled hard and made Thurles work very hard for every score.  Elena Gallagher was simply outstanding on goal and pulled off some great saves and kept Waterford very much in the game at half time.   Half time score was 2-05 to 0-07.

Two green flags from Ursuline Waterford Clodagh Curham and Clodagh Carroll in the first three minutes of the second half steadied Waterford putting them two points up. Ursuline Waterford continued to push on with scores from Abby Flynn, Aoife Fitzgerald and Clodagh Curham.  On the 20th minute Ursuline Waterford were ahead by eleven points on a score line of 3-13 to 2-06. However the Ursuline Thurles refused to give up and really battled hard and their hard work found the net on the twenty fifth minute.  However it was a little too late with Ursuline Waterford running out winners on a score line of 3-16 to 2-07.  This was an overall team performance with a particular mention to Elena Gallagher on goal, Lucy Hogan, Sorcha Cantwell and Sarah Maher in defence.  The midfield pairing Clodagh Carroll and Holly Ryan dominated through the game. The forwards were simply on fire with Aoife Fitzgerald, Abby Flynn, Aleisha Flynn and Clodagh Curham all outstanding.

This was a fantastic win for Ursuline Waterford. They are the first Waterford School ever to win the Junior A title. Ursuline Waterford entered their first junior competition in 2016.  They were beaten by the narrowest of margins in the Junior C Munster Final in WIT Carriganore.  In 2017 Waterford Ursuline won the All Ireland B competition.  In 2018 they were promoted to the A competition. Ursuline Waterford now go on to play an All-Ireland semi-final on February 17th against the Ulster champions.

Massive Congratulations to All involved with a particular mention to the Teachers Conor O’Toole and Emilie Darmody who have put in a massive effort with this team and the senior team

Ursuline Waterford:  Elena Gallagher (Gailltir), Hannah Leamy  (Tramore), Lucy Hogan (De la Salle) Sorcha Cantwell (Gailltir), Shauna Farrell (Butlerstown), Sarah Maher (Gailltir),  Jodie Tuohy (Gailltir), Clodagh Carroll (Gailltir), Holly Ryan (De la Salle), Rachael Walsh (Butlerstown), Abby Flynn (De la Salle), Laoise McLoughlin (Gailltir), Aleisha Flynn (Gailltir), Aoife Fitzgerald (Gailltir), Clodagh Curham (Gailltir),  Shauna Gaffney Hayes (Portlaw), Clodagh Hoctor (Gailltir), Vicky O’Sullivan (Gailltir), Alannah O’Sullivan(Gailltir), Caoimhe Mulvaney(De la Salle), Alannah McNulty (De la Salle), Lauren Cullen (Gailltir), Amy Kehoe (Gailltir), Aoife Dunphy (Tramore), Sarah Power (Gailltir), Anna Cullinane (Gailltir), Molly Comerford (Gailltir), Ciara Berry (Gailltir), Melanie Buck (St. Anne’s), Roisin Sweeney (Gailltir), Lina Sadiki Llodra, Emer McGlynn (De la Salle), Sinead Dunphy (Tramore), Grainne Kavanagh (St. Anne’s), Deanna O’Brien.

League Begins This Sunday

Best of luck to our senior team who play Meath in the first round on the National league on Sunday next in WIT Carrignore at 2.30PM.   This promises to be a very exciting game and one which both sides will relish and will believe it’s a game both can win. The last time the sides met Meath lost out by a point in the Intermediate All Ireland semi-final in 2015 and Waterford qualified for the All Ireland final.  This is a game Meath will feel they left behind them having an eight point lead at half time. Waterford will be without the Lismore players but will have likes of Beth Carton, Niamh Rockett and Lorraine Bray to call on.  Please come out and support the girls on Sunday next.
