Limerick Book Camogie League Semi-Final Place After Nail Biting Draw With Waterford

Limerick reached the semi finals of the Littlewoods Ireland Division 1 Camogie League after playing out a hard fought 1-09 draw with Waterford at Ballyagran on Sunday last.

The share of the spoils means Limerick pip Waterford to the Division 1 semi final place on offer by the virtue of Limerick superior points difference and the Shannonsiders rewards is a Clash with rivals Cork.

Limerick led 1-03 to 0-05 at half time, Limerick goal coming from top scorer Niamh Mulcahy inside three minutes after the lively Rebecca Delee had pointed Limerick in Front. Despite suffering that early body blow Waterford recovered and had drawn level by the 22nd minute when outscoring their opponents by 0-5 to 0-1. Indeed had it not been for excellent save by Limerick Goalkeeper Laura O’Neill who did superbly to deflect Kaeisha Tobin close range effort over the crossbar Waterford could have easily been ahead at half time.

Limerick looked to have gained a decisive edge when points from Mary O’Callaghan and a Mulcahy free had them 1-05 to 0-5 to the good four minutes in the second half.

However resilient Waterford hit back to edge a point in front 1-08 to 1-07 with a fantastic goal from Kaeisha Tobin with five minutes to go.  Waterford were well on top with Carton, Fitzgerald and Niamh Rockett all dominating. Caoimhe Costello levelled for limerick after a fine run by Sarah Carey.  Aisling Power scored a great point for Waterford levelling it once again. Limerick were then awarded a soft enough free which the ever accurate Mulcahy had no trouble converting. Waterford refused to give up and Beth Carton scored the final point levelling it for Waterford with one minute to go of normal time. However time ran out with the ref blowing it a minute later with no injury time played.

Waterford will take a lot of confidence of this game as a lot of the camogie pundits had wrote them off.  Waterford under the charges of Donal O’Rourke made great progress this season with two wins, two draws and one loss. Next up for Waterford is Munster championship against Cork on April 21st. This game will be playing in WIT Carrignore.

All Ireland Minor ‘A’ Championship

Waterford Begin Minor ‘A’ Championship with Crucial Away Victory over Limerick

Waterford 0-18 Limerick 3-3

Saturday 24th Venue: LIT Campus

Waterford opened their Minor ‘A’ Championship with a trip to Limerick on Saturday with the home team hoping to bounce back from an opening day defeat to Clare.  In what turned out to be a physical encounter, the away side were able give the travelling support something to cheer for with some excellent pieces of play throughout while finishing the game in a dominant fashion to run out six point winners.

Both teams traded points in the opening exchanges with Waterford getting the first score of the game through a placed ball.  Waterford took the game to Limerick from the outset with attacks built from the back with quick interplay evident throughout the team. Waterford had several goal chances but failed to find the back of the net.  Against the run of play Limerick got the first of their goals in the opening half. The Deise girls however kept their heads up and continued to run at the Limerick defence in numbers with Maggie Boylan leading the half forward line with a powerful performance.

Waterford continued to cause the Limerick defence problems with the quick forward play drawing fouls and punishing them by converting the awarded frees.  Limerick again found the back of the net in similar fashion against the run of play, but yet again Waterford failed to back down and found themselves tacking over some nicely pointed scores with Aoife Fitzgerald and Kaiesha Tobin taking care of the free taking duties going in at half time leading by the slimmest of margins.  0-09 to 2:02.

The second half opened with Waterford putting over four frees with the Limerick defence finding it difficult to hold a very mobile forward line resorting to fouling as a means to stop the Deise girls.  Waterford were led from the back with Mary Kate Curran at centre back commanding that position very effectively while the dynamic midfield partnership of Clara Griffin and Keeley Corbett Barry linking the defence and attack to great effect.  Limerick got their final goal of the game to bring the margin down further going into the last twenty minutes.  Waterford began to introduce players from the bench and that gave fresh impetus to both the defence and attack.  With the strength coming from the bench Waterford were able to finish out the game strongly in what was a very competent performance with the margin of victory six points.

The next step for the minor’s is a home game against Offaly on St. Patricks Day (March 17th) with WIT’s Carriganore as the venue.

Waterford Team: Megan Foran, Isabella Markiewiz, Shauna Fitzgerald, Aoife Hahessy, Hannah Flynn, Mary Kate Curran, Roisin Dunphy, Clara Griffin, Keeley Corbett Barry, Ciara O Sullivan, Maggie Boylan, Sarah Lacey, Kaiesha Tobin, Aoife Fitzgerald, Annie Fitzgerald

Subs: Clodagh Carroll for Annie Fitzgerald, Leah Sheridan for Aoife Hahessy, Lorna Foley for Kaiesha Tobin, Sally Kelly for Aoife Fitzgerald, Roisin Kirwan for Ciara O Sullivan.

Scorers: Kaiesha Tobin 0-11 (0-09f), Aoife Fitzgerald 0-05 (0-04f), Maggie Boylan 0-02

Limerick Team: Claire McNamara, Michelle Curtin, Kate Ambrose, Aisling Herbert, Eva Butler, Edel Cunningham, Aoife Curtin, Anna Rose Kennedy, Katie Heelan, Shauna Foley, Roisin Ambrose, Eimear Gavan, Ciara Barry, Aoife McMahon, Noirin Lenihan

Waterford Under 14 School of excellence

Saturday last marked the end of our U14 School of excellence- and what an experience it was…A really special thank you to all the girls (and their parents) who attended and also a huge thanks to all the club coaches who were crucial in the planning and roll-out of this project.

The skills on display were superb but more importantly skill was equally matched by the positive attitude and sheer determination of each and every girl who participated. Well done to all involved.  The future of Camogie in Waterford is really positive.

Waterford Camogie Academy proves a Fruitful Venture

BY COLIN BREHENY

The Curtains came down on the Preliminary Stages of a highly successful and popular four week U’14 Waterford Camogie Academy at a bitterly cold WIT Sports’ Arena in Carriganore in front of large crowds of interested spectators on Saturday afternoon last.

“The Beast from the East”, Ireland’s unwelcome Scandinavian visitor over the last few days,  certainly met its match in Carriganore at the weekend where over 100 resilient girls from all four corners of the County served up a red hot feast of A-Rated Camogie over six games, in the face of the biting winds that enveloped the Country.

The day’s proceedings were opened with a confidence building session for the girls, delivered by well-known hurling tutor John Burns, who emphasized the importance of the inclusivity of Camogie for all participants regardless of external factors.

Burns also used the opportunity to invite the girls to share their thoughts on the Academy and the impact it has on breaking down Club barriers and developing common friendships through Camogie.

On the back of six hours of specialised coaching with a range of guest trainers from across the hurling fraternity over the previous number of weeks, Saturday’s games offered coaches the chance to observe the players performing in full scale 15-aside games in their chosen positions.

Tramore Coach, Johnny Dunphy was suitably impressed with the levels of skill on view across all games. “It’s great to see how well players executed the skills of Camogie out there today. Despite the cutting breeze, each and every one of the girls can be proud of their performances. It’s certainly a tribute to the work that is going on at the grass root level back in the clubs that we can have such big numbers of girls competing so well on a day like this”.

On a day where participants, parents and coaches were all given a forum on which to offer their views on how such Academies can best serve Camogie in the County in the forthcoming years, Waterford Camogie Chairperson Ita Murphy emphasized the importance of opportunities like this.

“Days like today are vitally important to the continued promotion of Camogie within our County. Today alone, we have over 100 participants, 16 coaches, a huge number of parents and representatives from Camogie teams all over the County in attendance here. The feedback we glean from across all sectors assembled here will be of utmost important in the future development of such Academies in Camogie”.

Addressing the girls after the session, Sheila O’Donoghue commended the group on their performances, attitude and commitment shown over the past six weeks. “We have an unbelievable amount of talent here in this room and it’s fantastic to see girls mingling freely and developing friendships with peers from clubs across the County. That was the aim of a project like this – providing an experience where girls can go back to their clubs feeling that Camogie is something that they really want to be part of”.

All participants were later presented with their own individual Waterford Camogie training tops. Further trials will take place next weekend at a time and venue to be confirmed, with the Waterford U’14 Intercounty season due to kick off in mid-April.

Clubs will be informed of the next stages of trials via email this week.

Waterford Seniors make it three wins in a row

Waterford 2-13 Sligo 2-5

Waterford made it three wins in a row as they easily defeated Sligo in Round 4 of the Lidl Division two league in Carriganore last Sunday. Maria Delahunty and Aoife Murray made their first league start on this occasion. Sligo played with a strong wind in the first half and quickly got a point on the score board. However the Déise ladies quickly got going with some great points from Eimear Fennell, Michelle Ryan (2) and a well taken goal by Lauren McGregor. This gave the Déise girls a 1-3 to 0-1 lead after twenty minutes. Maria Delahunty was back on the frees and got her first point of the match from a placed ball. Roisín Tobin was replaced by Kate McGrath as she injured her knee. The wind made scoring difficult and as a result Waterford missed a few scoring chances. Sligo started to make use of the wind, Katie Walsh stood up to take a 45 which resulted in a goal in the top right hand corner of the goal. Sligo then followed this up with points by Sinéad Naughton, Katie Walsh and Nicola Brennan to leave the teams level at half time.

Waterford made a further two changes at half time with Aileen Wall replacing Katie Murray and Gráinne Kenneally taking the place of Michelle Ryan. With the wind in the second half Waterford used this to their advantage and scored nine unanswered points from Grainne Kenneally, Eimear Fennell (3), Maria Delahunty (3), Karen McGrath and Kate McGrath. This left the score standing at 1-13 to 1-4. However Sligo never gave up and pulled back a goal and a point from Emma Kevany and Louise Merrick. Aileen Wall got a great goal after some great team work up the field to leave the final score Waterford 2-13 Sligo 2-5. Waterford can take many positives from this game, Megan Dunford had a great game in defence while Emma Murray made many important blocks. It is great to see Maria Delahunty back and playing well scoring a total of four points; one from play, two from frees and a 45. Eimear Fennell has had a great league campaign to date and is a real danger in the forward line. Aoife Murray also impressed causing many turnovers as she never gave up and battled for every ball. Waterford will play Tipperary next Sunday at a Tipperary venue. Tipperary are currently unbeaten in the league so this will be a big game for the Déise Ladies.

Waterford Team; Sally Kelly, Rebecca Casey, Megan Dunford, Aisling Hahessy, Mairead Wall, Emma Murray, Michelle McGrath, Roisín Tobin, Karen McGrath, Katie Murray, Maria Delahunty, Aoife Murray, Lauren McGregor, Michelle Ryan Eimear Fennell.

Fine Win For Déise Ladies

Waterford moved a step closer to qualifying for this year’s Division One National Camogie League Semi Finals when they beat a fancied Dublin side with seven points to spare at the WIT Arena on Sunday afternoon last.

They head into the final round of games against Limerick this Sunday locked on seven points with the Shannon-siders where they must win if they are to join Kilkenny in the last four from group two, where as the home side will need only a draw to book that second semi final place by virtue of having a better score difference over Waterford.

For much of the game the home side were the better of the two sides and richly deserved the victory.

Right throughout the field Donal O’Rourke’s side had its heros. In defence the six backs hardly put a foot wrong, and goalkeeper Ciara Jackman was unlucky to see the size four sliotar past her, as she did well to stop Zoe O’Donoghue’s rasper but the power that was behind the shoot took it over the line after coming off the boss of the Gailltir net stoppers stick.

The centre field pairing of Lorraine Bray and Sibheal Harney were magnificent throughout, while in attack Waterford were magnificent with each player contributing handsomely in this win, with some fine scores coming from the likes of Beth Carton, Annie Fitzgerald, Fiona Morrissey and Deirdre Fahey while Niamh Rockett was constantly causing the Dublin backs problems with her powerful runs, and of the players that came in during the game they too impressed.

Early in this game despite Waterford scoring first it looked as if the visitors would justify why they would be regarded as favourites to win a second game in a row as Zoe O’Donoghue when picked out by Siobhan Kehoe did well to beat Ciara Jackman with a powerful shot.

But Waterford came roaring back with a brace of Beth Carton points with a brilliant effort from Fiona Morrissey in between to level matters.

Dublin went back in front with somewhat a controversial score on thirteen minutes, but another brace of scores from Beth Carton and one from Deirdre Fahey in between had Waterford in front once more.

Points from Siobhan Kehoe and Orla Baegan levelled matters on twenty two minutes, but Waterford finished the half strong with another brace from Beth Carton with Siobhan Kehoe pulling one back in first half added time which sent the sides to the dressing rooms with Waterford 0-9 to 1-5 in front.

Waterford began the second half with a Beth Carton goal on thirty two minutes. She intercepted from a short puck out that went stray and when she was one on one with Síle Ní Coitir she made no mistake.

Within sixty seconds, the visitors won a penalty for a jersey tug but Siobhan Kehoe who was very accurate in her sides win over Meath in the last round saw her effort brilliantly saved by Ciara Jackman.

Dublin did score twice in that third quarter through Zoe O’Donoghue and Orla Baegan but these were their sides last scores of the game.

At the other end of the field Waterford were fruitful with the chances they had as Beth Carton put over another brace of scores, and there was one each from Niamh Rockett, Deirdre Fahey and Annie Fitzgerald in the last five minutes to record an excellent win.

WATERFORD: Ciara Jackman; Mairead Power, Iona Heffernan, Jenny McCarthy; Aoife Landers, Áine Lyng, Claire Whyte; Lorraine Bray, Sibheal Harney; Niamh Rockett, Deirdre Fahey, Fiona Morrissey; Annie Fitzgerald, Beth Carton, Orla Hickey. SUBS: Marie Russell for Jenny McCarthy (39), Shauna Kiernan for Sibheal Harney (42), Aisling Power for Fiona Morrissey (48), Kate McMahon for Annie Fitzgerald (57), Claire Murphy for Beth Carton (60).

SCORERS: Beth Carton 1-9 (0-6F), Deirdre Fahey 0-2, Fiona Morrissey, Niamh Rockett (F), Annie Fitzgerald 0-1 each.

DUBLIN: Síle Ní Coitir; Arlene Cushen, Grainne Quinn, Emma O’Byrne; Hannah Hegarty, Aisling Carolan, Martha O’Donoghue; Miriam Twomey, Eimear McCarthy; Doireann Mullany, Alex Griffin, Orla Baegan; Siobhan Kehoe, Zoe O’Donoghue, Grace O’Shea. SUBS: Leah Butler for Martha O’Donoghue (HT), Róisín Baker for Alex Griffin (39),

Scorers: Zoe O’Donoghue 1-1, Orla Baegan (1f), Siobhan Kehoe (3F) 0-3 each.

Referee: Owen Elliott (Antrim).

Fennell hat trick helps the Déise ladies to another win

Waterford 4-10 Laois 2-5

The Waterford Ladies got another win on the board as they defeated Laois at Park Ratheniska Gaa field last Sunday. With early morning snowfall many gaa matches around the country were postponed but the Déise ladies braved the elements and made the trip to Laois for the round three clash. The Waterford team was similar to that which defeated Clare the week before with just two changes on the day. Ger Power who sealed the Déise victory last week with a well taken goal, stood between the posts for Waterford in place of Sally Kelly and Dearbhaile Hayes started the game at wing back. Laois had the wind in the first half and ran into a quick lead with a pointed free from Clare Conlon. However Waterford settled down and got the next three scores from Eimear Fennell, Lauren McGregor and a pointed free by Sinéad Ryan. Clare Conlon and Noirín Kirwan pointed for Laois to leave the sides level on three points a piece. Captain Mairead Wall quickly replied with a well taken point from wing back. Laois worked the ball back up field and somehow spotted an opening and found the back of the Déise net. The Déise girls kept their heads up and worked tirelessly, moving the ball well. After working the ball well up the field, it found the hands of Liz Devine who made no mistake and finished it to the back of the Laois net before having to leave the field with a hamstring injury. Roisin Tobin and Sinead Ryan finished the scoring for Waterford in the first half with two more points leaving the half time score Waterford 1-6 Laois 1-3. Waterford were to be aided by the breeze in the second half and Aoife Murray was introduced. Waterford started well but were dealt a major blown when Maria Delahunty got sin binned and one minute later Lauren McGregor also say yellow. The 13 side Waterford team didn't let this affect them and their work rate for the next ten minutes was incredible. The players showed great strength and fitness keeping vital possession. Aileen Wall came on and used her pace tracking players and attacking at speed, she was only on the field a few minutes before she had the ball over the bar. Despite the Déise effort Laois continued to attack and Emma Lawlor found the back of the Déise net for a second time. Three minutes later Eimear Fennell responded with a great goal after a perfect pass in from Aileen. Emma Lawlor pulled another point back for Laois before Lauren McGregor came back on and slotted the ball over the bar followed by another point from Aileen Wall. Waterford were back to fifteen and piled on the pressure, Maria Delahunty scored a point before she sent a high ball into Eimear Fennell who once again found the net giving Waterford a lead of 3-10 to 2-4. Mags McEvoy sent over a free for Laois. Eimear Fennell finished the scoring with her third goal of the match to leave Waterford winners in a score line of 4-10 to 2-5. Round 4 will be at home to Sligo Sunday 25th February. Waterford team: Geraldine Power, Aisling Hahessey, Megan Dunford, Rebecca Casey, Dearbhaile Hayes, Emma Murray, Mairead Wall, Karen McGrath, Róisín Tobin, Lauren McGregor, Liz Devine, Katie Murray, Sinead Ryan, Michelle Ryan, Eimear Fennell. Ursuline battle to All Ireland final

St Angela’s Ursuline 2-8 Abbey Community College 2-4

St Angela’s Ursuline rolled up their sleeves on Saturday afternoon to beat local rivals Abbey Community College and advance to another All Ireland final.

It turned into a real struggle for last year’s junior champions as Abbey dropped an extra player into defence from the start. The congestion strangled the life out of both attacks.

This semi final was littered with frees as well. Wexford referee Aidan O’Brien blew the whistle 46 times (26 in the first half).

Ursuline’s star quality eventually shone through. Goals either side of the break by Aoife and Annie Fitzgerald gave them breathing space in a claustrophobic encounter. Dashing midfielder Clodagh Carroll was head and shoulders above the rest. Her lengthy carries moved the team in red in the right direction. She also nailed a long distance free at a critical stage. Abby Flynn shot three points from play on a day where forwards were heavily policed.

From the throw in, Abbey immediately withdrew corner forward and Ferrybank native Grainne Heffernan. Ursuline reacted by bringing out Rachael Walsh to the half forward line. It created a stalemate situation for most of the opening thirty minutes.

A goal from Aoife Fitzgerald late in the half followed by a Niamh Murphy point gave Ursuline a 1-3 to 0-2 interval advantage. Abby Flynn opened the scoring on seven minutes and a slick move created a second for Annie Fitzgerald. The Munster champions wouldn’t register for another twenty minutes however. Lead attacker for the Abbey Afton Grace levelled matters with two frees.

On 28 minutes, Aoife Fitzgerald grabbed a free from Annie at the edge of the square and fired to the far corner. Carroll broke through three high challenges to win a free. Alanna Gallagher was shown a yellow card. Murphy put the Ursuline four clear in injury time.

The second half was a much livelier affair. Grace moved to full forward and rattled the roof of the net within 45 seconds of the restart. The Ursuline cancelled it out almost immediately as Annie Fitzgerald’s 34th minute free deceived Abbey goalkeeper Aoife Slattery and went all the way (2-3 to 1-2). Abby Flynn pushed the lead out to a comfortable five points when another Fitzgerald free didn’t have the distance.

The Kilkenny side refused to surrender and Grace pointed a free. Nearing the last quarter, a Caroline Kennedy effort flew over the umpire’s head and wide. Annie Fitzgerald then split the uprights from 45 metres. With twelve minutes left, Kennedy approached from the left and drove the ball past Leah O’Donoghue. She followed it up with a point (2-5 to 2-4).

Clodagh Carroll steered the Ursuline out of danger. The Gailltir midfielder won a free 50 metres from goal and dispatched it herself. A Flynn point settled the nerves further.

In an uneasy finish for the leaders, Ciara O’Sullivan intervened twice as Abbey chased an equalising goal. Afton Grace also missed the pick-up on a last-minute dead ball. In the second minute of injury time, Annie Fitzgerald sent over the insurance point from a free.

Dublin champions Coláiste Íosagáin stand in their way on March 3.

Scorers for St Angela’s Ursuline: Annie Fitzgerald 1-3 (1-1fs), Aoife Fitzgerald 1-0, Abby Flynn 0-3, Clodagh Carroll (f), Niamh Murphy 0-1 each.

Scorers for Abbey Community College: Afton Grace 1-3 (3fs), Caroline Kennedy 1-1.

Déise Ladies Defeated In South East Derby

All Ireland Runners up Kilkenny overran Waterford with a slick attacking display on Sunday afternoon to put them top of the table.

Ann Downey sent out ten players from the team that comprehensively beat Waterford in last June Championship match.  Kilkenny came into the game with two comprehensive wins over Dublin and Clare. Waterford came into the game with a good win over Meath and a draw in a thriller encounter against Clare. Waterford’s panel was decimated for this third tie due to the illness of number of panel members forcing Donal O’Rourke to make a number of changes before the game.

Kilkenny came into this game full of confidence and started the game at a very fast pace with Miriam Walsh registering their first point in the first minute of play.  Two minutes later Julianne Malone registered her first score.  Waterford struggled with the pace of the game but to their credit Waterford battled hard and won a free on the fifth minute which Carton converted.  Beth Carton continued to test the Kilkenny backs and on the seventh minutes Carton was awarded a penalty.  Emma Kavanagh pulled off a great save and put Kilkenny on the attack again. Kilkenny won free which Ann Dalton converted on the eighth minutes. Kilkenny stormed into the game with point from Julieann Malone. The only goal of the game came on the eleventh minute from Grace O’Donnell.  Katie Power put over another point for Kilkenny leaving the scoreline 1-05 to 0-01 on the fifteenth minute. Their fluid forward movement and accurate short passing created openings which caused many problems for the Waterford defence.  Waterford upped their pace and finished strongly with three unanswered points by Beth Carton to leave the score at half time 1-06 to 0-04.

In the second half Waterford got off to the better start with Carton winning a free and converting it.  This just left four between the teams. Kilkenny opened their scoring with scores coming from Denise Gaule and Aoife Doyle. Waterford had some great passages of play and whilst they got in the faces of the black and amber, they didn’t carry a sufficient attacking threat.  On the twentienth minute of the second half Carton sent over another free leaving the scoreline 1-10 to 0-07. Donal O’Rourke rang in a number of changes in the last ten minutes giving debuts to Saoirse O’Brien, Abbie Dunphy and Sadie Mai Rowe.  Kilkenny finished with a flurry of points from Miriam Walsh, Aoife Doyle and Denise Gaule.  Niamh Rockett fired over a fantastic point in injury time and the final point of the game came from a free which  Denise Gaule converted leaving the scoreline 1-14 to 0-08.

The favourites Kilkenny were very impressive and led from start to finish with outstanding displays from Grace Walsh, Aoife Doyle, Ann Dalton, Julieann Malone, Grace O’Donnell and Miriam Walsh.  There were a lot of positives for Waterford with some very impressive individual performances. For Waterford Beth Carton, Mairead Power and Lorraine Bray all stood out.

Waterford next game is against Dublin on the 18th of February in WIT Carrignore at 2PM.  This is a must win game for Waterford if they are to progress to the play offs.
