Ballymacarbry and Comeragh Rangers meet in Senior County Final

Following the county’s impressive win in the All Ireland Intermediate semi final on Saturday last, the attention returns to the club scene when the County Senior final and Junior finals take place on Saturday next 5th September in Fraher Field. First up will be the junior final which will involve Comeragh Rangers and Na Deise. This will be the curtain raiser to the main event when champion Ballymacarbry will do battle with Comeragh Rangers in a repeat of last year’s final. This game, being played for the Edith Kennedy Cup promises to be a thriller and if the game produces half the excitement of last year’s final the crowd will be in for something special.

Perennial champions Ballymacarbry now bidding for their 34th title in a row will be looking to extend their amazing run for yet another year. Comeragh Rangers certainly give the champions a major fright last year before going down by six points 2-14 to 2-8 and will be well prepared and have another season’s experience under their belts. Both teams have many players who have inter- county experience at the highest level. The Ballymac team contains many well known names who have performed for the county including the Ryan sisters, Michelle Louise and Sinead, the Walls, Linda, Mairead and Aileen, the McGraths, Michelle and Karen as well as Tipperary inter county players Lauren Fitzpatrick, Treasa McGrath and Shauna Ryan. There is a nice mix of experience and youth in the Ballymac team with Lauren Guiry, Becky Desmond and Becky Hogan all ready to play their part for the girls from the Nire Valley.

Comeragh come into the final on the back of a good win against Stradbally and have many stars of their own. The Murray triplets have made their county intermediate debuts this season with tremendous success. The team is backboned by the four Dunphy’s Nora, Anne, Ciara and Shauna and well backed up by Kate and Aisling Hahessey. Geraldine, Mairead and Eibhlin Power bring a wealth of underage experience to the table as does Aoife Dunne. Comeragh are led by their captain and goalie Marian Hogan who will be anxious to make sure that the cup crosses the Comeragh’s for the first time. Both management teams are very astute, Joe Murray, Stephen Fitzgerald and Kevin Power are on the Comeragh bench while Ballymac’s management team of Mike Guiry, Catherine Ryan and Gerry McGrath will be doing their best to keep the title in Ballymac for another year.

It will be a close one to call, going on last year’s enthralling game and the match ups between the various inter-county players will be worth the entrance fee alone.

Waterford Intermediate Ladies clinch final place

Waterford Intermediate Ladies football team duly emulated their camogie counterparts with a comfortable win over Leitrim in the TG4 All Ireland semi final on Saturday last at Páirc na nGael in Limerick. Both teams went into this game with high expectations having impressively won their respective quarter finals. From the start Waterford were the more threatening of the two teams and as early as the second minute were denied a goal  when Leitrim keeper Michelle Guckian made a great save from Sinead Ryan. Waterford could have had another goal immediately from the kickout when a slick passing movement ended up in the hands of Aileen Wall only for the Ballymacarbry starlet blazing wide with the goal at her mercy. Waterford were made pay in the 5th minute when a turn over by Leitrim led to Aine Tighe rounding Waterford keeper Katie Hannon and registering the first score of the game totally against the run of play a goal to leave the Westerners three points in front. This lead was short lived however when Aileen Wall buried the ball in the Leitrim net to level the scores after six minutes. Aine Tighe put Leitrim back in front with a free in the 8th minute and Dearbhaile Beirne stretched it to two in the 15th minute.

The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair, Waterford had lots of possession but the Leitrim defence, playing out in front of the Waterford forwards were first to the ball and snuffed out the scoring chances. In the 17th minute Waterford pulled back a point when Maria Delahunty expertly kicked a 45 metre free, off the ground, over the bar. Waterford nearly got through for a goal in the 22nd minute but Grainne Kenneally’s effort was well saved by the Leitrim goalie. A free in the 28th minute by Sinead Ryan levelled matters and the Ballymac girl closed the scoring with a fine individual point just before half time to give Waterford a slender lead at half time on the score-line Waterford 1-3 Leitrim 1-2.

Waterford opened the second half with intent five unanswered points in the first six minutes left Waterford comfortably in front. Maria Delahunty kicked two frees in the 2nd and 3rd minutes. Aileen Wall kicked a point after a great catch in the middle of the field by Emma Murray in the 4th minute. Sinead Ryan kept the momentum going with appoint a minute later and a brilliant run through the heart of the Leitrim defence by Elaine Power was rewarded with a point. Aine Tighe cut the deficit to four points and indeed it could have been much closer in the 9th minute when a rasping shot from Carla Le Guen was brilliantly saved by Katie Hannon with Emma Murray relieving the danger by taking the ball off the goal line. In the 10th minute Aileen Wall pointed after a pass from Maria Delahunty but Aine Tighe quickly cancelled this out with a point from a very acute angle. Katie Hannon was once again call into action but the Ballyduff girl pulled off yet another great save to keep Waterford goal intact. Sinead Ryan collected a pass from Aileen Wall and pointed to put six between the teams. The game was virtually over as a contest when Michelle Ryan who had replaced Hannah Landers took a pass from Aileen Wall and buried the ball and Leitrim’s hopes in the back of the net to leave the Deise nine points clear with 13 minutes gone in the second half.

Three unanswered points; a free from Sinead Ryan, a Grainne Kenneally effort and a Maria Delahunty score left Waterford twelve points in front in total control as the game entered the final quarter. The Waterford defence got a rude reminder in the 18th minute when Aine Tighe scored a great solo effort goal and Michelle Heslin and Tighe added points to cut the deficit to seven. Waterford hit the post through Caoimhe Mc Grath and Aileen Wall brought her personal tally to 1-2. Aoife Murray drew another brilliant save from the Leitrim goalie before Maria Delahunty with two points and one from Michelle Ryan closed out the scoring to leave Waterford to march on to an All Ireland final on the 27th September on the final score-line Waterford 2-17 to Leitrim’s 2-6.

Aileen Wall was named player of the match and there were many impressive performances all over the field. Sinead Ryan and Maria Delahunty led the way in the scoring stakes as did substitute Michelle Ryan, but there was great work rate in the back with Elaine Power and Linda Wall driving the team on at every opportunity. Katie Hannon was excellent in goals and the Mc Grath sisters Karen and Michelle along with Megan Dunford and Emma Murray were sound at the back. This was a good team performance, especially in the second half and the girls now look forward to a third All Ireland appearance since 2010 against Kildare or Offaly on September 27th.

Waterford Ladies Footballers in All Ireland semi final

Waterford ladies intermediate football team hope to emulate their Camogie counterparts this weekend when they attempt to qualify for the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate final. Waterford travel to the Gaelic Grounds Limerick on Saturday to do battle with the Connacht champions Leitrim with a place in the All Ireland final at stake against either Kildare or Offaly. This promises to be an exciting match with the possible outcome being very difficult to call. In the Munster final Waterford had a four point victory margin over Clare while Leitrim had the same margin against the ladies from the Banner in the All Ireland Quarter Final. The two teams have met once already this season in a National Football League match back in April when the Deise came out on top on a score line of 5-11 to 3-9, but this result will count for nothing when the two teams do battle on Saturday.

Both teams were impressive in their respective quarter finals, Waterford overcame Sligo, while Leitrim had to battle very hard to get the upper hand on Clare. Leitrim possess a fine panel of players, in Michelle Guckian they have one of the best goalkeepers in the country at the moment. Claire Beirne and Melissa Hewitt are excellent defenders  and captain Sarah Mc Loughlin and Anna Conlon are a formidable midfield pairing. Up front their forwards are very sharp and quick to exploit any mistakes. Deirbhille Beirne give a player of the match performance in the Connacht final, while Áine Tighe presented major problems for Clare in the quarter final when she scored three goals and made a fourth for the Leitrim girls.

Waterford have many stars of their own. Katie Hannon is a very accomplished goalkeeper and is ably aided by a strong defence which includes Megan Dunford, Elaine Power and the Mc Grath sisters Michelle and Karen. Linda Wall, the captain leads by example and covers every inch of the field for the cause. Waterford up front are also very strong with a very lively forward line which includes players of the calibre of Hannah Landers, Maria Delahunty, Aileen Wall Sinead Ryan and Gráinne Kenneally who are all more than capable of making life tough for the opposing defences.

It is going to be a tough close encounter between two good teams but if the Waterford defence can put the shackles on Aine Tighe and the rest of the Leitrim forward line, the Deise ladies can look forward to an All Ireland final date at the end of September.

Throw in, in Limerick on Saturday next August 29th is at 4:15 p.m. and forms part of a double header with the senior semi final between Munster rivals Kerry and Cork.

Congratulations

Well done to the Waterford Camogie Intermediate team on their great win over Meath and as a result have qualified for an All Ireland against Kildare in September.

Best wishes to the county under 16 camogie girls who hope to emulate their football companions as they seek to win an All Ireland against Dublin in Mc Donagh Park Nenagh on Sunday next 30th August.

Waterford Intermediate Ladies in All Ireland Semi Final

Waterford intermediate ladies by virtue of a hard earned win over their league final conquerors Sligo have now qualified for the All Ireland semi final and have set up an intriguing clash against Connacht champions Leitrim.

From the outset Waterford set about their task in a very professional manner and Maria Delahunty opened the score in the second minute with a pointed free. This score was quickly cancelled out by Sligo’s sharpshooter Katie Walsh. Walsh had proved to be a thorn in the Waterford side in the league final helping herself to 2 goals and 4 points but in this game she was well policed by a very vigilant Waterford defence. Maria Delahunty kicked her second free to put Waterford back in front and the Deise girls were given a sharp reminder of how dangerous the Sligo attack was when a speculative ball into the Waterford square was finished to the net by corner forward Denise Mc Grath only for to see her effort ruled out for an infringement. Sligo piled on the pressure but were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard due to some wonderful goalkeeping by Katie Hannon and a save off the line by Grainne Kenneally. Kenneally was unlucky at the other end of the field when following a sweeping movement from one end of the field to the other her shot went narrowly wide with the Sligo goalkeeper beaten.

Maria Delahunty put her side three points to the good with another pointed free and the Waterford lead was doubled to six when Katie Hannon made the long trek from the goal to take a penalty after Grainne Kenneally was fouled in the large square and the goalie from Ballyduff made no mistake with her effort. The first score from plat came from the boot of Sligo midfielder Sinead Mc Tiernan in the 22nd minute but just on the stroke of half time Waterford’s lead became six again when captain Linda Wall broke up field to pop over a point to leave the half time score Waterford 1-5 Sligo 0-2.

Waterford opened the second half in resolute fashion determined to finish the job. Points from Maria Delahunty and Sinead Ryan left eight between the teams but Sligo hit back playing some excellent football with three points of their own courtesy of Katie Walsh (two) and captain Stephanie O Reilly. Further points were trades by Sinead Ryan and Rachel Monaghan and also by Michelle Ryan and Emma Hansbury to keep the deficit at five points with ten minutes to go. Maria Delahunty and Michelle Ryan kicked two more points for Waterford to press home their advantage but Katie Walsh ensured that Sligo grimly held on with a point of her own. This was to prove however to be a false hope for Sligo as this was to be their last score of the match. Waterford pressed on and unanswered points by Aileen Wall, Maria Delahunty and Sinead Ryan left no doubt that it was going to be Waterford’s day. Fittingly it was left to Delahunty to kick the last point of the match, her ninth to leave Waterford impressive winners on the final score-line 1-15 to 0-8.

Waterford now march on to an All Ireland semi final appearance against Connacht champions Leitrim on Saturday 29th August with the game to be played in Limerick with a 4:15 throw in.

Waterford lined out as follows: Katie Hannon; Mairead Wall, Michelle McGrath, Linda Wall; Megan Dunford, Elaine Power, Emma Murray; Karen McGrath, Louise Ryan; Hannah Landers, Maria Delahunty, Aileen Wall; Gráinne Kenneally, Sinead Ryan, Mary Foley. Subs: Michelle Ryan for Mary Foley, Caoimhe McGrath for Hannah Landers, Kate McGrath for Louise Ryan, Mary Kate Morrissey for Gráinne Kenneally.

Waterford Ladies face Sligo in All Ireland Quarter Final

Waterford ladies intermediate football team, travel to Birr on Saturday next (15th) to take on Sligo in the quarter final of the TG4 All Ireland championship. This pairing is a repeat of the Division 3 League final in which Sligo came out on top. In the National League final Waterford started brightly and raced into an eight points lead courtesy of two goals by Sinead Ryan but Sligo came back into it and with two goals from full forward Katie Walsh came out as victors on a 2-12 to 2-8 score line. This quarter final will be the third meeting of the teams this year as in February Waterford were convincing winners in Fraher Field by 5-13 to 0-5.

This game will be a quite different affair with both camps knowing that whoever loses on Saturday will be out of the championship for another season. In last year’s championship both of these teams exited the fray at this stage Waterford being beaten by Fermanagh while Sligo went down to the All Ireland champions Down. Waterford by virtue of winning the Munster championship for the 7th year in a row progressed directly to the Quarter final stage while Sligo who were beaten by Leitrim in the Connacht final had a narrow win over Roscommon by two points, two weeks ago to set up this encounter.

Waterford go into this game with the confidence that they are Munster champions but Sligo will be confident also, having got one over on the Deise in the league final. Sligo possess many fine footballers, Emma Hansberry is one of their star players and they have forwards of the calibre of Katie Walsh, Stephanie O Reilly, Jacqui Mulligan and Karen Moloney who will need close watching. Waterford looked impressive in the Munster Final in a game played in difficult conditions and have many good players themselves. Katie Hannon is a very sound goalkeeper and Elaine Power, Karen and Michelle McGrath and others provide a strong back line. Up front Sinead Ryan, Aileen Wall and Hannah Landers are capable of turning the chances created into scores. It should be a good game of football with both teams capable and confident of winning. If Waterford perform to their potential captain Linda Wall will be leading her team into an All Ireland semi final tilt with either Leitrim or Clare.

Throw-in, in Birr on Saturday 15th August is at 2:00 with Niall Mc Cormack from Laois in charge of proceedings.

Who is the stand out person in ladies sport in Waterford for the month of July?

Athletics, Ladies Football and Camogie are the sports that make the short list to find out who is the person who impressed most in July and be named as this sites ‘Waterford Sports Lady of the Month’.

July was a good month for all three sports with a number of people in each in with a major shout.

In Athletics Kelly Proper had a number of excellent outing’s.

The Ferrybank A.C. member had a win in the 200 metre event at a meet at Rhede in Germany winning in a time of 23.43 seconds which is just outside the time required to take part in next years Olympic Games in Rio.

Kelly Proper also took part in the Cork City Sports where she ran against a very strong wind in the 200m competition, finishing second in a time of 24.38 seconds, and won at the Morton Games in Dublin winning the 200 metre event in a time of 23.54 seconds.

In the National Junior and Under 23 Championships at Tullamore another Ferrybank A.C. Member Phoebe Murphy won the Junior 200m title in a time of 24.93 seconds.

In the same competition West Waterford’s Lisa Houlihan won the under 23 Pole Vault with a leap of 2.80 metres. She also took part at the Cork City Sports where she finished in second place, one place ahead of Megan O’Connor.

At the National Juvenile Championships again in Tullamore there was impressive performances by a number of Waterford athletes including Anne Corcoran in the under 17 Shot Pot, Lauren Shields in the Under 12 High Jump and Kylie Heinen in the under 14 High Jump. All three are members of the Ferrybank Athletic Club.

In the same competition West Waterford’s Aoife Hamilton in the Under 18 Steeplechase and Grace Furlong from Waterford A.C. in the under 18 Long Jump had impressive performances.

At the Glo Health National Juvenile Championships, Nessa Murphy won the high jump with a 1.66m leap in the under 19 competition, Orlaith O’Brien win the under 17 javelin with a throw of 42.43 metres,  while Prise Owoeye won the long jump with a leap of 5.08 metres. All three are members of the Ferrybank Club.

In the same competition, others that impressed from Waterford clubs were Katie Murphy, Grace Furlong, Hannah Jacob, Orla O’Connor and Emma Caulfield.

Orlaith O’Brien took part in a Schools International at Grangemouth in Glasgow and threw 46.56 metres in the Javelin.

And finally in Athletics, Mary Ryan Jennings at the National Masters Championships at Tullamore had some excellent performances in the 400 metre, 800 metre, 1500 metre and Shot Putt competitions.

July was another brilliant month for Camogie as Waterford won their way through to All-Ireland semi finals at Under 16 and Intermediate levels.

At under 16 level, Waterford topped their group with three wins and a draw. Wins over Antrim, Clare and Dublin were registered with the draw coming against Cork.

Waterford are to meet Meath in the semi finals and if they come through that game they will get the chance to retain the title won 12 months ago playing against either Dublin or Derry.

To reach this stage of the competition Waterford have had some stand out performances from the likes of Niamh Murphy, Aisling Madigan, Anne Corcoran, Faye Curley, Saoirse English, Ciara Jackman, Taylor Healy, Aisling Baumann and Chloe Dempsey amongst others.

If the under 16’s are standing out this year, so too the same could be said of the Intermediates.

In July, Waterford had too good wins over Antrim and Dublin in the group stages of the championship where players like Beth Carton, Catriona McGlone, Dawn Power, Trish Jackman, Molly Curran, Lorraine Bray, Aisling Power and Vikki Falconer have all impressed.

Waterford have begun August with another win and are in the All-Ireland semi finals where they will play Meath in the coming weeks, and while the Royal County Ladies will be difficult to beat, Sean Fleming’s charges will be confident that they can reach Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day next month, and add an All-Ireland Final to the League Final already won earlier this year.

If July was a good month for Camogie the same could well be said of Ladies Football.

In the middle of the month Waterford won a seventh Intermediate Ladies Football Final in a row, beating Clare at Mallow.

On the day Waterford had some excellent performers in the likes of Maria Delahunty and Sinead Ryan who hit five points each, Grainne Kenneally who hit Waterford’s only goal of the game as well as Hannah Landers, Mary Foley and Aileen Wall who all got on the score sheet as well while Linda Wall was judged to be the Player of the Match also had an excellent game.

At under 16 level, Waterford had good wins over Kildare in the All-Ireland Semi Final at Freshford and then a hard fought win over Roscommon who put a lot of pressure on Waterford late in the game in the All-Ireland Final

Waterford in both games had some great performers in the likes of Katie Duggan Sullivan, Abbey Dunphy, Keeley Corbett-Barry, Rosie Landers, Abbie Dalton, Hannah Power and Chloe Fennell.

For the month of July mention of six players who achieved something special. Michelle McGrath, Mairead Wall, Michelle Ryan, Elaine Power, Nora Dunphy and Linda Wall were all part of the Waterford Ladies Intermediate Football team who were panel that won the Munster Final, the seventh time in a row the sextet of players had done so.

As in previous months, one player in particular did that little something special over all the rest and like in previous months, that player has not got a mention yet. Eagle eyed followers of ladies sports in Waterford might have spotted this already.

So who is this month’s winner?

It would be very hard to look past one West Waterford Lady as this month’s winner. Dungarvan’s Kaeisha Tobin is part of the Waterford under 16 Camogie and Ladies Football teams and has impressed a lot in July.

Many say it is very difficult to be a duel inter county player in the modern games in either the men’s or women’s games but so far Kaiesha is managing it, and hopefully will continue to do so going into the future.

In fact the Dungarvan teenager is very multi talented as those that log on here each month will have noticed that in the last few months she has been mentioned more than once as she helped Dungarvan United’s under 16 ladies soccer team to honours in recent times.

In Camogie she was part of the team that saw Waterford beat Antrim, Clare and Dublin as well as draw with Cork and in Ladies football she put eight points past Kildare in the All-Ireland semi final three weeks ago and last week she put in a player of the match performance in the All-Ireland final scoring 1-3 for Waterford on the night against Roscommon at Nenagh.

To finish up, a reminder, if you are involved in women’s sport and want extra publicity for your sport, email me your regular notes (keanethomas@eircom.net) and I will upload them onto this site for you.
