Waterford Ladies Senior Footballers come up short against Kerry

Waterford’s  ladies  football team came up short against Kerry in their Round 3 match of the TG4 Munster senior championship played in Brosna in Kerry on Saturday last losing out by seven points on a score-line of Kerry 1-14 Waterford 1-7.

Playing with a slight breeze in the first half, Waterford were first to score with a pointed free from Maria Delahunty. This was quickly cancelled out by a point from Sarah Houlihan in the 5th minute. Bernie Breen kicked Kerry into the lead in the 8th minute and sharp shooter Sarah Houlihan rattled the Waterford net with a goal in the 9th minute to give the Kingdom a lead that they would not relinquish during the game. Unanswered points from Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Laura Rogers and Sarah Houlihan left Kerry comfortably in front after 16 minutes but Waterford got back into it with a goal from Michelle Ryan on 17 minutes. Cassandra Buckley steadied the Kerry ship with a point in the 18th minute but Waterford hit back with two points of their own courtesy of Maria Delahunty in the 19th and 20th minutes to narrow the gap to three. Waterford were playing good football at this stage but an inability to convert chances into scores was costing them dearly and Kerry took full advantage to slot over two points from Jane Lynch and Sarah Houlihan to close out the first half five points ahead Kerry 1-8 Waterford 1-3

Waterford opened the scoring in the second half with a point from Maria Delahunty but Jane Lynch cancelled this one out in the 4th minute. Delahunty and Lynch exchanged points in the 6th and 7th minutes to still leave five between them. Maria Delahunty kicked her sixth point of the match in the 9th minute but Sarah Houlihan replied with two of her own. Waterford were pressing well at this stage and missed two good goal scoring chances which would have brought them well back into the game but sharpshooter Houlihan added a Kerry point in the 19th minute to put seven between them again. Maria Delahunty kicked her and Waterford’s seventh point with four minutes to go but Kerry had the last say with a point from Lorraine Scanlon in the last minute to leave Kerry winners and advance to a Munster final against Cork on the final score line of Kerry 1-14 Waterford 1-7. Best for Waterford in an over-worked defence were Karen McGrath, Aisling Mullaney and Mairead Wall. Up front Michelle Ryan took her goal well and Maria Delahunty really impressed with her tally of seven points.

Waterford now turn their attention to the All Ireland series of games which will start at the end of July

Kilrossanty Brickey Rangers take under 14 C  title in style.

Kilrossanty Brickey Rangers took their first county title of the year in style when they overcame the gallant and brave challenge of St Oliver’s in Fraher Field on Saturday last. Aided by a strong breeze in the first half Kilrossanty Brickey Rangers took full advantage of the elements to build up a large lead by half time. St Oliver’s came out with all guns blazing in the second half and got a quick goal and a point but bad luck in front of goal when they hit the post and the cross bar meant that they were not able to peg back the lead and so Kilrossanty Brickeys ran out winners of a very entertaining contest. Well done to both teams on the wonderful display of footballing skills.

Gaultier and Ballysaggart represent Waterford Ladies Football with pride in Feile

Gaultier and Ballysaggart travelled to Kerry and West Limerick to take part in Feile Peil 2016 last weekend and did their county proud. Gaultier based in the Old Mill club Newcastlewest in Limerick reached the semi final in Division 3 with good wins over An Tearmainn Donegal and Crossabeg/Ballymurn Wexford before losing narrowly by three points to eventual winners Mungret/St Pauls of Limerick.

Ballysaggart were based in Tralee and had three great group games with hosts Kerins O’Rahilly’s, Loughrea of Galway and Beale/Ballyduff before going down in their quarter final clash to Tír Na nÓg Randalstown of Antrim. Well done to both clubs, their mentors and their loyal band of supporters in being wonderful ambassadors for Waterford Ladies Football.

A Very Enjoyable Feile weekend in Lismore

Lismore Camogie kicked off the Feile weekend on Friday morning last by going to mass in St. Carthages Church. A sincere thanks to Fr. Cullinan for his lovely ceremony for the Feile team and their mentors. It was then off up to Roses West end Lounge for the Feile breakfast and once again a sincere thanks to Rose Dowd and staff for the lovely breakfast.

The girls and their mentors walked up to the GAA field in their club colours to meet Crecora U14 team, who were Lismore's guest team. At 2.30 both teams got on their busses to head for Gall Tir and Passage to play their first two games of the competition. Lismore played Clare's Kilnamena/Feakle in the first game, but were defeated and defeat was their lot in the second game V Gall Tir.

Crecora played both Gall Tir and Kilnamena/Feakle and both games ended in a draw.

Both teams got back to Lismore at around 8,45 and were greeted by the awaiting parents,

Saturday morning at 11.30 saw Lismore play Crecora where Crecora proved to be very strong  and the Lismore girls were once more on the loosing end.

Borrisoleigh Co. Tipperary was the next trip for Lismore to platy North Tipps Annacarty in the fourth round. Defeat once again for our girls. Meanwhile, back in Dundrum Crecora were playing Thomastown Co. Kilkenny where they came up against a very strong team, so Crecora were also knocked out of the competition.

The girls and their mentors were back in Lismore for 6,30 and both lots of girls went to their host families to get ready for the Feile Barbeque in the Community Centre. A very enjoyable night of entertainment and food ensued with over 450 people in attendance. Lismore chairperson Mary Russell and secretary Marie Russell presented a picture of Lismore Castle to the manager of Crecora and he turn presented a lovely plaque in appreciation to the committee of Lismore Camogie club.

Waterford Ladies take on the Kingdom in Munster Championship

After a break of five weeks Waterford Ladies Football team play their second match in the round robin series of games when they take on Kerry on Saturday next 25th June at a venue and time to be decided. Both teams have each played one game against All Ireland champions Cork with contrasting results, the Déise falling short on a six point margin 1-10 to 0-7 in Fermoy while the Kingdom overcame Cork in Macroom on Friday night last in Macroom on the score-line Kerry 2-14 Cork 2-9.

Waterford will have learned hugely from their opening senior championship game their first in eight years and indeed put it up to Cork for long periods of the match. Kerry have huge experience in the senior championship and while they have been living in the shadow of Cork in the All Ireland stakes for the past ten years they have beaten the Cork girls on a number of occasions in the Munster championship and indeed are the reigning Munster Senior champions.

Kerry have a very strong defence, powered by All Star and Team of the League full back Aislinn Desmond. Bernie Breen and Louise Scanlon provide a very strong midfield pairing and up front Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Amanda Brosnan will need close attention.

Waterford are not without their stars players also, five members of the team made the team of the league: Mairéad, Aileen and Linda Wall, Gráinne Kenneally and Maria Delahunty. Katie Hannon is cool and calm in the goals and Michelle and Karen Mc Grath and others will work tirelessly to ensure that Kerry get nothing soft. It promises to be an intriguing game of football and while Kerry will be favourites to take the spoils, Waterford have the spirit and know how to claim victory. Fixture details are not to hand as of yet but they will be broadcast on WLRFM and on the Waterford Ladies Football Twitter and Facebook pages as soon as they become available.

De La Salle Reach Quarter Finals of Feile Na nGael 2016

This All Ireland club competition took place over 3 days on Fri 17th, Sat 18th & Sunday 19th June. On day 1 we travelled to play 2 games in Portlaw. At 4pm our first game took place against the recently crowned county B champions Portlaw-Roanmore.
Our girls showed there through form with a great display of camogie running out victorious 4-0 to 2-4. At 545pm we played Four Roads of Roscommon. We never hit the same form as in the earlier game but we battled right to the final whistle losing out 0-1 to 2-4. At the end of day 1 the group standings were 1. Portlaoise 2. Four Roads 3. DLS 4. Portlaw.
Day 2 began with a game against our visiting club Portlaoise who had won there 2 games on the Friday. Our girls showed great spirit throughout this game against good opponents, but came up short at the final whistle 0-1 to 2-4.
When news filtered through from the other group game that Four Roads had lost there final group game without even scoring unbelievable the calculators had to be taken out. It had been confirmed that we had finished 3rd & were into the Shield Competition, but something didn't sit right at our end (we don't do the soft option).
After an hour of waiting & wondering where to next it was then confirmed after all due to a miscalculation on the scores in the committee room & the "results from the 3rd round games lol" we were now heading to An Rinn after finishing 2nd in the group & qualifying for the Cup Competition. Round 1 results: DLS 4-0 Portlaw-Roanmore 2-4, Portlaoise 2-3 Four Roads 1-0. Round 2 : DLS 0-1 Four Roads 2-4, Portlaw-Roanmore 0-1 Portlaoise 8-2. Round 3 : DLS 0-1 Portlaoise 2-4, Portlaw-Roanmore 7-8 Four Roads 0-0.
We headed down to An Rinn feeling proud having qualified for the 1/4 finals of the Cup Competition knowing we were facing tough opposition in Myshall of Carlow who had won all there 3 group games impressively. Our girls battled hard throughout this game losing out 0-0 to 5-6 at the final whistle. Myshall eventually losing out in the final to Naas 1-3 to 1-1.
Afterwards the girls & family headed back to Gracedieu for the Saturday night entertainment & BBQ.  Many thanks to Kinny, Stewart & Anthony for all the hard work put in with this squad over the last number of months. Many thanks to all the families who hosted the visiting Portlaoise girls who were a credit to themselves, there families & club over the weekend. A big thank you to all the parents, family members & supporters of DLS camogie club for your support in Portlaw, Gracedieu & An Rinn during the girls matches.
A very big thank you also to all the DLS GAA club for everything on the Friday night & all day Saturday in Gracedieu especially Charlotte Brenner & Rose Madigan for all there hard work within the camogie club. Many thanks to Ciara Twomey, Beth Carton, Taylor Healy & Katie O'Keeffe for helping out with the umpiring at Sunday's Div 3 camogie final in Walsh Park.
Finally a massive well done & thank you to our Feile squad of 2016 who conducted themselves superbly over the weekend carrying on a fine tradition from previous Feile squads of 2012, 2014 & 2015 from within our camogie club. Roll on 2017 when we will try do it all over again. ????

Wins for Ballymacarbry, Abbeyside and Dungarvan in Mary Walsh Memorial 7 a side competition

A feast of football took place in Modeligo GAA grounds on Bank Holiday Monday last when 12 teams partook in the Mary Walsh 7 a side tournament. Played in beautiful sunshine and in a great spirit after four hours of football of the highest order, there were victories for Ballymacarbry in the Senior competition while Abbeyside and Dungarvan took the honours in the Intermediate and Junior competitions respectively. End to end football was the order of the day while a total of 102 goals and 202 points scored in a total of 20 games. In the senior competition Ballymacarbry and Comeragh Rangers A saw off the challenges of Ballyduff and Stradbally to reach the final. In this final we had some excellent football with Ballymacarbry settling into their rhythm from the word go and running out convincing winners in the end on a score line of Ballymacarbry 6-14 Comeragh Rangers 1-10

In the intermediate division, three teams participated Abbeyside, St Pats and Comeragh Rangers. Abbeyside took on St Pat’s in the final and the old saying that goals win matches was certainly true in this case Abbeyside got five while St Pats could only manage two to leave Abbeyside victorious on the final score line 5-10 to 2-10.In the Junior division, competition between the three teams involved was fierce. All the group games involving the hosts Na Déise, Ballymacarbry and Dungarvan were well contested and in a final that was in the melting pot up to the last five minutes Dungarvan came out on top over Ballymacarbry on a final score line Dungarvan 6-8 Ballymacarbry 3-5.

Sincere thanks to the Walsh family for this wonderful tournament, to Modeligo/Na Deise club for providing the use of the facilities and for ensuring that everyone was fed and looked after. Well done to all concerned.

Under 8 Blitz

The sun shone in Dungarvan GAA field on Saturday last as the ground was invaded by the next generation of Waterford Ladies Footballers. For two hours it was non-stop action with over eighty young footballers from seven different clubs playing football with a smile on their faces. The atmosphere was brilliant and the skill level was amazing. Great credit is due to Seán Tobin  County Development officer who assembled a hard working team to help out in preparing and serving food, looking after the children and refereeing matches. Thanks also to the Dungarvan club for providing the use of their facilities and a sincere thank you to the Clashmore, St Oliver’s, St Pats, Comeragh Rangers Shamrocks, Kilrossanty Brickey Rangers and Dungarvan clubs whose under 8 players showed that the future is certainly bright for Waterford Ladies Football.

Team of the League awards

Waterford were well rewarded for their Lidl Division 3 league win with the announcement of the League team of the year. 60 players in total received awards spanning the four divisions of the league. These players were voted on by the managers of the various divisions and no manager was allowed to vote for a player from his county. Waterford picked up five awards: Mairead and Linda Wall were honoured in the full back line, Gráinne Kenneally picked up an award at midfield. Maria Delahunty was the recipient of the right half forward award and Aileen Wall made it a night to remember bringing the left half forward award home. To cap of a great night for Déise Ladies football, manager Pat Sullivan was a worthy winner of league manager of the year.

April Player of the month awards

Two more awards came Waterford’s way in the last two weeks also. Linda Wall won the LGFA award for her role in the Waterford’s National League final victory over Tipperary.

Maria Delahunty was a worthy winner of the WLRFM monthly sports star for April based on her performances against Tipperary

Well done to all concerned.
