This All Ireland club competition took
place over 3 days on Fri 17th, Sat 18th & Sunday 19th June. On day 1 we
travelled to play 2 games in Portlaw. At 4pm our first game took place against
the recently crowned county B champions Portlaw-Roanmore.
Our girls
showed there through form with a great display of camogie running out
victorious 4-0 to 2-4. At 545pm we played Four Roads of Roscommon. We never hit
the same form as in the earlier game but we battled right to the final whistle
losing out 0-1 to 2-4. At the end of day 1 the group standings were 1.
Portlaoise 2. Four Roads 3. DLS 4. Portlaw.
Day 2 began with a game against our
visiting club Portlaoise who had won there 2 games on the Friday. Our girls
showed great spirit throughout this game against good opponents, but came up
short at the final whistle 0-1 to 2-4.
When news filtered through
from the other group game that Four Roads had lost there final group game
without even scoring unbelievable the calculators had to be taken out. It had
been confirmed that we had finished 3rd & were into the Shield
Competition, but something didn't sit right at our end (we don't do the soft
option).
After an hour of waiting & wondering where to next it was
then confirmed after all due to a miscalculation on the scores in the committee
room & the "results from the 3rd round games lol" we
were now heading to An Rinn after finishing 2nd in the group & qualifying
for the Cup Competition. Round 1 results: DLS 4-0 Portlaw-Roanmore 2-4,
Portlaoise 2-3 Four Roads 1-0. Round 2 : DLS 0-1 Four Roads 2-4,
Portlaw-Roanmore 0-1 Portlaoise 8-2. Round 3 : DLS 0-1 Portlaoise 2-4,
Portlaw-Roanmore 7-8 Four Roads 0-0.
We headed down to An Rinn feeling proud
having qualified for the 1/4 finals of the Cup Competition knowing we were
facing tough opposition in Myshall of Carlow who had won all there 3 group
games impressively. Our girls battled hard throughout this game losing out 0-0
to 5-6 at the final whistle. Myshall eventually losing out in the final to Naas
1-3 to 1-1.
Afterwards the girls & family headed back to Gracedieu for the
Saturday night entertainment & BBQ. Many thanks to
Kinny, Stewart & Anthony for all the hard work put in with this squad
over the last number of months. Many thanks to all the families who hosted the
visiting Portlaoise girls who were a credit to themselves, there families &
club over the weekend. A big thank you to all the parents, family members &
supporters of DLS camogie club for your support in Portlaw, Gracedieu & An
Rinn during the girls matches.
