Another month and another female sports star in Waterford has impressed.

Another month has passed so its time to name someone involved in ladies sports in Waterford who achieved something special in the month of November and name them as the unofficial Women’s Sports Woman for the month.

From the outset, I must admit I took my eye of the ball a little in the month of November and did not keep as close eye on who was achieving what, so this month lets do something different.

Lets begin with a question.

How many All-Stars was Waterford won down the years. Many on the ball will know that since 1974 Waterford have won 32 All-Stars in hurling, the most recent being Noel Connors, Tadhg de Búrca and Maurice Shanahan, the first being Portlaw’s John Galvin.

In between Kevin Moran, John Mullane, Michael Walsh, Eoin Kelly, Ken McGrath, Tony Browne, Dan Shanahan, Stephen Molumphy, Eoin Murphy, Paul Flynn, Fergal Hartley, Jim Greene and Mossie Walsh have all being honoured for their exploits by those charged with selecting the team of the year each year.

Some supporters will know that prior to the All-Star Awards as we know them started to be presented, in the 1960’s the Cu Chulainn Awards were presented for a number of years. Austin Flynn won three of these awards and Larry Guinan, Mick Flannelly and Phil Grimes all won one award each in the life time of these awards.

But Waterford’s awards don’t stop there.

Down the years Waterford have won  All-Stars in both Ladies Football and Camogie and it is important that we hold the holders of these awards in the same esteem that we hold those that have won them in hurling as the effort that our female players put in is the same and sometimes greater than what our males put in.

Waterford’s first lady to win an All-Star was back in 1986 and was won by Marie Crotty (Ballymacarbry) in the centre forward position.

That was the year that the Ladies Football All-Ireland Finals were first played at Croke Park and as the Junior final was played before the senior final, Marie in addition to being Waterford’s first female All-Star she also holds the distension of being the first lady to score in a football All-Ireland Football Final to be played at G.A.A. Headquarters.

Since then, Waterford have added many other All-Stars in Ladies Football, with some of Waterford’s all time greats of the sports from the great team of the 90’s winning many awards.

Before that great team came along however, Waterford had other players that won All-Stars in their first years playing ion the senior grade.

Ann Fitzpatrick (Ballymacarbry) was selected in the number 5 shirt on the All-Star team selected in 1987.

1988 saw the amount of awards won in Ladies football won over doubled as three Waterford players were selected in the team of the year.

Dolores Tyrell (Ballymacarbry) was selected in the number four shirt, June Whyte (Kilrossanty) was selected at centre back and Marie Crotty (Ballymacarbry) was selected at centre forward.

There was another three All-Stars for Waterford in 1989. This time all three awards went to members of what was a superb Ballymacarbry Club Side at the time as Anne Dunford was selected at number four while Áine Wall and Bernie Ryan were selected at numbers ten and eleven respectfully.

With Waterford now beginning to bring through one of the most exciting groups of players ever to grace the Inter County Ladies Football scene, in 1990 three more All-Stars followed for Waterford as Ann Fitzpatrick was selected at Centre Back and Áine Wall and Marie Crotty were selected in the wing forward positions.

In 1991 Waterford won the first of five All-Ireland Senior Ladies Football Finals in the 1990’s and it was only fitting that Waterford had the highest representation on the team of the year with five members of the All-Ireland winning team named on the team of the year.

Martina O’Ryan was selected at full back, Anne Dunford was named at number four, Anne Fitzpatrick at seven, Marie Crotty in the middle of the field and Áine Wall was selected at Full forward. All five were members of the Ballymacarbry club.

Waterford retained the All-Ireland title in 1992 and again had the highest representation on the team of the year with five. Twin sisters Martina and Geraldine O’Ryan were named at Full back and Centre Forward respectfully, Kilrossanty’s June Whyte was picked at number four and Bernie Ryan and Áine Wall were selected in the centre of the field and at full forward.

Waterford lost the 1993 Munster Final to Kerry and at the end of the year with no visit to GAA Headquarters that year, Waterford had to do with one All-Star as Áine Wall was named in the number 15 shirt.

Waterford won a third All-Ireland final in 1994 and again at the end of the year won five All-Stars as Martina O’Ryan and Noreen Walsh were selected at Full Back and Centre Back, Caithriona Casey was selected at number 12 while Fiona Crotty a younger sister of Marie and Áine Wall were picked in the full forward line.

In 1995 a fourth All-Ireland Final was won for Waterford and so too was a record seven All-Star Awards (for Waterford) was won.

Anna Lisa Crotty was selected as the goalkeeper of the year and Regina Byrne and Cleona Walsh who like Anna Lisa Crotty were part of the Ballymacarbry club was named in the corner back positions and Dunhill’s Julie Ann Torpey was also selected in the back line at number seven. Marie Crotty and Caithriona Casey were picked in the half back line and Geraldine O’Ryan was picked in the number 13 shirt.

Waterford won four All-Stars in 1996. Anna Lisa Crotty was again picked as the goalkeeper of the year, Noreen Walsh was picked at full back and for the second year in a row Julie Anne Torpey was picked at number seven, while Áine Wall was named in the number fifteen shirt.

Anna Lisa Crotty, Noreen Walsh and Julie Anne Torpey were selected in the 1997 team of the year in the same positions that they filled twelve months earlier and there was two more All-Stars that year for Waterford as Geraldine O’Ryan and Caitriona Casey were picked in the corner forward positions.

Waterford won a fifth All-Ireland Final in 1998 and with it won six All-Stars. Siobhan O’Ryan was picked at full back and Noreen Walsh was picked at number four while Anna Lisa Crotty won a fourth award in a row but in a new position at number five and there was an all Waterford full forward line as Rebecca Hallahan, Aine Wall and Geraldine O’Ryan all named in the team of the year.

Waterford won four All-Stars in 1999 as Siobhan O’Ryan and Anna Lisa Crotty were selected in the same positions as twelve months earlier and Caitriona Casey and Geraldine O’Ryan were picked in the numbers twelve and fifteen shirts.

Waterford won four All-Stars in 2000. Oliva Condon was picked at number four, Martina O’Ryan was picked at centre back, Anna Lisa Crotty was a winner again in 2000 but this time in the middle of the field and Old Parish’s Mary O’Donnell was selected at number twelve.

After this the great Waterford team of the 1990’s began to break up as more and more players began to retire. However for a while the All-Stars continued to come Waterford’s way.

In 2002 Waterford won four All-Stars as Tramore’s Donna Frost and Na Déise’s Olivia Butler (nee Condon) were selected in the former back positions and the exploits of Julie Ann Torpey again caught the eyes of the judges as she was again picked at number seven and Mary O’Donnell was picked out for some outstanding performances in the middle of the field.

In 2003 two former All-Stars for Waterford Anna Lisa Crotty and Mary O’Donnell was selected in the team of the year at wing back and centre field respectfully while Clashmore’s Mary O’Rourke was also named in the team of the year at number thirteen.

A third All-Star followed for Mary O’Donnell in 2006 when she was picked again in the centre of the field, and in 2007 Rebecca Hallahan became the last Waterford player to win an All-Star in Ladies Football when selected at number two in the team of the year.

In Camogie, All-Stars are a much newer concept than in Ladies Football and are often won mainly by players playing in the senior grade.

However for those that are playing in the intermediate and junior grades of intercounty camogie there is soaring stars where players in these grades are judged on players playing with sides in a similar standard to they are playing in themselves.

Waterford have not won any All-Stars in Camogie to this point but have won a number of Soaring Stars.

After Waterford lost out to Offaly in the 2009 All-Ireland Junior Final when the team of the year was picked, Waterford had two players named in the best team of the year as Áine Lyng was selected at wing forward and Karen Kelly was picked at full forward.

Twelve months on Waterford were in the Junior All-Ireland final again but the final outcome was the same as in 2009 as Waterford lost out to Antrim after a replay. However, Waterford players involved in that team did enough to have four named in the team of the year.

Shona Curran was picked at full back, Trish Jackman was picked at centre back, Jennie Simpson was named at number seven and for the second year in a row Áine Lyng was named in the team of the year, this time at centre forward.

Waterford made it third time lucky in 2011 as the side managed by Mark Cooney won the Junior All-Ireland final beating Down in the final at Croke Park.

Seven players of that winning side were named in the team of the year as Aisling O’Brien was named as the goalkeeper of the year, Emma Hannon and Jennie Simpson was named in the full back line, Gráinne Kenneally was named at wing back, Trish Jackman was picked in the middle of the field on the team of the year, Nicola Morrissey was picked at centre forward and Karen Kelly was picked at full forward.

For both Ladies Football and Camogie in Waterford 2015 was a great year as the two sides won Intermediate All-Ireland finals two weeks apart at Croke Park both against Kildare.

For both sides, they were honoured with three players from the respective panels being named for awards recently.

In Ladies Football, Ballymacarbry’s Linda Wall and her younger sister Aileen were named in the 45 names in with a chance of being named on the team of the year along with Abbeyside’s Maria Delahunty.

None of the three made the overall team of the year, but in just getting named in the final selection was a great achievement.

In Camogie, Cappoquin’s Lorraine Bray, De La Salle’s Beth Carton and Gailltir Trish Jackman won intermediate Soaring Star awards for their efforts during the course of the year.

All this said, the winner of the Unofficial Waterford Sports star of the month has a connection with the above.

In both Camogie and Ladies Football Waterford players were named as the Intermediate players of the year during the month of November.

In Camogie Trish Jackman was the winner after excellent year.

She was part of the Waterford team that won a Division two league final in May and in September won an All-Ireland Intermediate title and in between she won a seventh All-Ireland Puc Fada in a row.

In Ladies Football Aileen Wall was also outstanding in the Waterford shirt, helping Waterford reaching the Division three league final for the second year in a row, where Pat Sullivan’s charges had to settle for second best against a good Sligo side, but they won the one that matters most at the end of September as she hit 2-2 for Waterford in Croke Park against Kildare as Waterford won the right to compete in the Senior Championship in 2016 for the first time since they were relegated in 2008.

Both Trish and Aileen were named as the Intermediate Camogie and Ladies Footballer of the year at both Associations All-Star Awards night during November and as recognition are this months award winners, the prize for which is some extra publicity for their chosen sport on here.

Cahir prove too strong for Lismore in Munster Final

It was not to be for Lismore in the Munster Intermediate Club  Final 2015 which was played in the Mallow GAA Complex on Saturday last November 28th. Lismore who were going for their three in a row of Munster Finals came up against a young and very determined Cahir side who stamped their authority from the start as they led by 2-6 to 0-4 at half time.
Lismore hit a purple patch in the second half as they plugged back their opponents lead to four points but try as they might it was not to be their day and were subsequently beaten on a score line of Cahir 2-10 Lismore 0-8.
It was hard luck to our senior girls but they can hold their heads up high as they have given us many years of great entertainment following their endeavours and adventures. We look upon these girls who are great camogie ambassadors and have the medals to prove it. We are all so proud of them !.
A huge thankyou to the girls for their commitment and entertainment and to their management team of Seamus Prendergast, Geraldine Barry, Austin Curran and Jim Russell for their time and commitment over the past three years. Also thanks to Dylan and Jane our water carriers, Conor Tinnelly (Physical Trainer) and Colin Walsh (Physio/First Aid), Helen Barry who washed the jerseys, Breda Geoghegan (secretary) and Una Walsh (Treasurer). Thanks to all who helped out in anyway.

Guess the score!
Congratulations to Evan Kingston who was the winner in our guess the score competiton. As there was no one who guessed the score a name was drawn from the cards sold and it was Evans name who came out. Thanks to all who sold lines and those who bought lines.

Lismore look to add to Roll of Honour

Munster Intermediate Camogie Club Final

Lismore V Cahir

Mallow GAA Complex

Saturday November 14th  @ 3pm

Lismore Camogie Club

Colours; Black and Amber

Team Sponsor; The Red House ,Lismore

Lismore Camogie Club fielded their first senior team in 1980 but did not win their first senior County title until 1985 followed by a series of County titles in the following years. In 2010, Lismore Camogie club won the County senior title for the first time in nine years and also created history in winning their first and Munster’s first ever Munster Intermediate Club title when they beat Newmarket on Fergus in Buttervant on October 30th 2010, and went on to represent the County in the All Ireland series but were unfortunate to be beaten in the semi-final stage by Eoghan Rua of Derry. They once again represented Waterford in the 2011 Club Championship and overcame Tipperary's Clonulty in Bansha and were subsequently beaten in the All Ireland semi-final against Galway’s Ardrahan.

Lismore Camogie Team met St. Annes in the County Final in 2012, where St. Annes came out on top denying Lismore of a three in a row. The 2013 season kicked off with the teams first training session on St. Patricks weekend. This year the team won both league and championship titles continuing to win the Munster Final drawing against Newmarket-on-Fergus at full time and again after extra time and winning against them by a two point margin on the second day. The girls went on to play Ulster Champions Liatroim Fontenoys in the All Ireland semi-final where the Lismore girls overcame them with a six point margin earning them a place in The All Ireland final in Croke Park on the first weekend of March. The girls played Kilkenny’s Ballyhale Shamrocks, like the Munster final, the girls drew the game and were to play the replay on Patricks weekend of 2014 in Clonmel. History was created for the club this year where Caithriona McGlone was the hat trick hero as Lismore lifted the AIB All-Ireland intermediate club camogie title in fine style in Clonmel Sports field on this historic Sunday afternoon.

In 2014 Lismore were beaten in the League by eastern Rivals St. Annes by the minimum, but it was Lismore who beat St. Anne’s by the minimum in The Championship final. It was Munster Championship bound for the Cathedral town where the girls met Tipperary’s Borrisoleigh in a pulsating game in the Munster Semi-Final where Lismore came out of a tough battle to earn them a place in the final. Cork’s Sarsfields were their opponents on the day where Lismore overcame them with ease to win the Munster title for the fourth time.

Oranmore/Maree of Galway were the girls opponents in the All Ireland Semi-final in February and were once again victorious on this occasion earning them a place in the All Ireland Final in Croke Park for a second year in a row. Unfortunately luck was not on the girl’s side this time as Kilkenny’s Piltown who were their opponents who came out on top by a one point victory.

The 2015 season kicked off for the girls capturing the County League title in Tallow against neighbours Cappoquin in May. The girls beat Gailltir in the first round of the championship in June and drew with St. Annes in the second round in July and beat Cappoquin in the third round later in the month earning them a place in the County final once more against arch rivals St. Anne’s on October 3rd in Fraher Field where they overcame St. Anne's by a 5 point victory to earn them a place in the Munster Final for the 5th year.

Who is October’s Waterford Sports Star

A little later than planned, its time to name the female sports person in Waterford that impressed most in the month of October.

Again it was another great month for female sports participants in Waterford with a number of people standing out in their chosen sport.

For the Maxol WIT Wildcats in the Women’s Premier (Basketball) League October was an excellent month.

While the month did not get off to the best of starts for the side as they lost 73-54 to DCU Mercy at the Mercy Gym in Waterford, the Wildcats had good performances from Jazmen Boone who finished the game with 24 points while Helena Rohan finished with 12.

The Wildcats got their first win of the league in the second round of games when they came from 28-26 down at half time to win 62-60 in Portlaoise with Jazmen Boone again finishing top scorer with 26 points while Helena Rohan finished with 16.

Game three for the Wildcats in October was a home game against Courtyard Liffey Celtics and resulted in another win for the Waterford side, this time winning 76-69 with Helena Rohan finishing top scorer this time around with 25 points and Jazmen Boone finished on 17.

Game four saw Maxol WIT Wildcats was an away game to Team Montenotte Hotel and resulted in a 68-65 defeat with Helena Rohan again finishing top scorer on 18 points, four more than the tally hit by Cathy Kavanagh who hit two more than Jazmen Boone.

The Wildcats last game in October resulted in third win (64-58) in Cork with Jazmen Boone hitting 22 points while Katie Fox hit 11 and Helena Rohan hit 10. Others to impress for the Wildcats in October included Sinead Deegan and Melissa Stone.

For Dungarvan Hockey Club October was also a very good month as they won all three of the games they played beating Clonakilty 1-0, Fermoy 2-0 and a comprehensive 5-0 win over UCC. In each of these games the Old Boro Club had a number of outstanding performances including from the likes of Freida Mcgrath, Lucy Donnelly, Laina O’Hare and Lisa Fitzgerald.

In Ladies Football Ballymacarbry won the Munster B Ladies Football Final beating Banner Ladies from Clare in the final with Waterford’s inter county players, Aileen, Mairead and Linda Wall, Sinead, Louise and Michelle Ryan as well as Karen and Michelle McGrath impressing once more and while defeat was their lot in the Munster ‘A’ Final against Cork side MouneAbbey the same players again impressed.

There was more success for Waterford however in Munster as Comeragh Rangers won the Munster Plate Final beating Cappaghwhite in the final 4-9 to 1-4 in Tipperary town. There was some excellent performances for Comeragh Rangers all round with Katie Murray in particular standing out hitting two late goals to secure the win.

It was an amazing month for Kilmeaden swimmer Shauna O’Brien taking at the Manchester International Swim as she broke Irish records three times over the weekend in a 25 metre pool.

Putting in some very strong performances at the competition, Shauna claimed records in the 50m and 100m fly events – breaking the Irish record on the 50m butterfly in 26:98, then again in the final in 26:76 and she went on to claim silver and another Irish record in the 100m fly, swimming into second place with 59:10.

To round off an outstanding weekend she claimed the bronze in the 50m freestyle in 25:99.

In Camogie it was a good month for both De La Salle and Lismore as they won important County Finals.

Lismore retained the senior final beating Saint Annes at Fraher Field. Aoife Hannon finished as top scorer for Lismore with 9 points while Caitriona McGlone hit 0-4 with Ruth Geoghegan, Shona Curran, Shauna Kiernan, Gráinne Kenneally and Nicola Morrissey impressing while for Saint Anne’s there was impressive performances from the likes of Jenny Simpson who hit five points, Pauline Cunningham, Zoe O’Donoghue and Niamh Rockett.

In the minor game that followed the senior game De La Salle beat Cappoquin to take a first title at this grade with Beth Carton, Aisling Madigan, Caoimhe Drohan, Courtney Healy and Taylor Healy all impressing while for Cappoquin Aisling Power, Roisin Uniacke, Aisling Moore and Lauren McGregor impressed.

The Waterford city side would later add the Junior County final to their roll of honour, again a first beating Ferrybank in the final.

So who is the person that stood out most in October. While there is some impressive performances across a number of sports, its hard to look past De La Salle Camogie star Beth Carton.

She has had a great 2015, breaking into the Waterford Intermediate Panel, winning League and All-Ireland medals, winning Minor and Junior County Finals and also winning a Soaring Star (Camogie All-Stars for those playing in the Intermediate and Junior Grades).

In the Minor County final win over Cappoquin she hit 4-7 of her sides tally of 5-15 a very impressive tally and in the Junior final recently she hit 3-8 of her sides 3-12 against Ferrybank.

De La Salle Win First Junior County Title

Well done & congratulations to our Junior Girls on a fantastic win in their County Championship Final played in Walsh Park on Sat 24th October. Result De La Salle 3-12 Ferrybank 0-2.

Played on a fine surface no space was afforded by both teams in the opening half. Playing against a slight breeze we led at half time 0-3 to 0-1.

The half time break and team talk gave us time to regroup. From the opening whistle in the second half the girls were determined to push on, which they did showing the skills and commitment they have shown throughout this campaign.

When the final whistle was sounded it was befitting for this group of girls who have shown tremendous commitment, attitude and spirit towards training, matches & each other throughout the year. Many thanks to the girls, the mentors Decky Drohan, Derek Healy and Joey Carton. Thanks also to Rose Madigan on first aid, parents, family members, friends and supporters for their support throughout the year.

This is a great achievement by the girls considering this is our first year entering an adult camogie team since our camogie club's formation in Sept 2008 and entering U-12 & U-14 teams in C graded championships in 2009. Intermediate Camogie 2016 has a nice ring to it.

After some very impressive performances in the U13 League this bunch of girls completed their games in Lismore on Wednesday last when they hosted All Ireland Feile Champions Gall Tir in the GAA field. The girls put up a fine performance once again but were unfortunately beaten on a score line of 2-07 to 0-04 points denying them of  a place in the final. Well done to all the girls and their mentors Declan, Alice and Shauna. Under 14 Ladies Football County Trials

In the last Number of years in the U14 Category, Waterford U14 County teams have won 3 in row Munster B Titles and have been involved in three All Ireland B Finals, winning two out of the three of those All Ireland B Finals.

Last year was a very successful year, we beat  Kerry in the Munster A Semi Final to reach the A final, this was a great achievement for Waterford ladies football as a  Waterford U14 county team hadn't  reached an  Munster final A for the previous 10 years. On the day, our girls came up just short against a very strong Cork side.

In the Munster B final the girls faced up to a strong Tipperary side. On the first day, Tipperary scored a goal in the last few seconds of the game to equalise and earn a replay. In the replay, played in Stradbally the two teams could not be separated at the end of normal time and the game went to extra time, which Tipperary, who were to go on and become All Ireland champions, won by a point.

On the panel last year we had girls from the age of 11 on panel and even starting on the team. So Parents don't be shy in leaving the younger girls in!!!  On behalf of the Waterford U14 management, we would like to invite all girls from all clubs that are eligible for under 14 football for 2016 to try out for these trials for Waterford U14 Team 2016. If any girl is interested, Parents please contact Ciara Dunphy at 086-2486708 for further information.

Who are the standout performers when it comes to Waterford Women involved in sport in September.

We are already into the first full week of October so its time to name the person that has impressed most in women’s sport from Waterford over the past month.

In previous months, the name of the person that impressed most was kept to the last few paragraphs of the piece published here, with a number of people involved in different sports named throughout the piece before this.

This month I’m going to make changes.

September was a great month for sport in Waterford. For a side from Waterford to win one All-Ireland was great. For two sides from Waterford to win All-Ireland’s was magic.

For both the Waterford Intermediate Camogie and Ladies Football teams 2015 will live in the memory of many for a long time.

Earlier this year both sides contested league finals. The Camogie team won theirs beating Laois at a wet Dr. Cullen Park in Carlow, while the Ladies Football team despite putting in a good showing against Sligo, they had to settle for second best at Parnell Park in Dublin.

While every team likes to win competitions in the first half of the year, it’s what happens in the championship that teams are best remembered for.

And to see both the Camogie and Ladies Footballers end their year running out from under the Cusack Stand on All-Ireland Final day was no major surprise as both Sean Fleming (Camogie) and Pat Sullivan (Ladies Football) both in their first season put together excellent panels, made up of experience players that they had inherited from their predecessors and some of the exciting young prospects that they had worked with in recent years on the underage scene.

And just as it was no surprise to see both sides end their years at Croke Park, it was no surprise either to have seen Caithriona McGlone in Camogie and Linda Wall in Ladies Football, lead their way up the steps of the Hogan Stand at the end of an hours players with big Waterford support inside the ground on both days sending them up the steps with a massive roar.

For the Camogie Final, conditions on the day were very much like the day of the league final four months earlier and some were wondering could it be an omen.

Waterford had finished second best at G.A.A. Headquarters for two years running before they won the Junior All-Ireland in 2011, and they had exited the Intermediate Championship at the penultimate hurdle in their first three years playing in the second tier, but heading to Croke Park most knew that there was something special about this years team and many felt that their would be no slip ups this time about.

Waterford started the game as the favourites with five minors in their starting fifteen, after they had beaten the Lilly-whites on two other occasions this past year.

Waterford appeared to be a little nervous at the start of the game.

As a result Kildare raced into an early 1-2 to no score lead, the goal coming on three minutes as Noelle Earley hand-passed past Deirdre Brennan after the Butlerstown net minder lost her hurley in an attempt to clear the sliotar just before the goal was scored, after which Melissa Lyons and Emer Reilly put the sliotar between the uprights.

But Waterford recovered from been further behind with less time to play in their semi final win over Meath and the experience of doing so stood to them here.

A brace of Beth Carton points were followed with efforts from Lorraine Bray and Jennie Simpson and not long after Shona Curran who made an impact after coming on as a sub against Meath, made a similar impact here as just before the break her delivery was caught by Aisling Power who had only one thing on her mind and she made no mistake as she gave Waterford a 1-4 to 1-2 lead at the break.

Two minutes after the restart there was more for Waterford supporters to celebrate about as when a 20 metre free was awarded, Beth Carton spotting a gap in front of the Kildare goal sent a low and hard shot in the slippery conditions straight to the Kildare net for a second Waterford goal.

The goal from the brilliant De La Salle Club player was like driving the final nail in the Kildare coffin.

The Lilly-whites never recovered from that score. They landed just three further scores in the remainder of the game, two from the stick of Susie O’Carroll, one of which was a free the other from Melissa Lyons.

Waterford despite the slow start was for the best part of the game were always the better team. They finished the game as strong as they were up to this point.

Lorraine Bray with a brace, Trish Jackman from a free, Nicola Morrissey and Niamh Rockett all added points to Beth Carton’s early second half goal to seal a 2-9 to 1-5 win for Waterford, one which Waterford were full value for.

Coincidently, its worth recording here as it has been in a few places already that Lorraine Bray wrote herself into the history books in this game, as the Melleray teenager became the first woman to score at Croke Park with the aid of Hawkeye.

If Waterford’s All-Ireland Camogie Final win was good for Waterford, the same could be said of the Ladies Footballers win over the same county.

Just like the Camogie team, the Ladies Footballers in the last few years had gone so near.

2015 saw Waterford win the Munster Intermediate Final for the seventh year in a row, with many of the side involved in either six or seven of these wins.

But while there was no shortage of Intermediate Munster Medals in the panel, there was a scarcity of Adult Grade Inter County All-Ireland medals.

But this year the Waterford panel travelled to the game intent on putting that to right.

Waterford on the day were magnificent, running out winners with 13 points to spare (3-14 to 0-10).

The Waterford forwards caused the Kildare backs all sorts of problems.

Maria Moolick opened the scoring for Kildare after just 15 seconds but within 12 minutes such was Waterford’s dominance the game was over as a contest.

Aileen Wall quickly cancelled out the opening score for Kildare and it was followed with points from Sinead Ryan and Maria Delahunty before Ellen Dowling knocked over a second score for Kildare.

The first goal of the game came on 12 the first goal of the game came the way of the brilliant Aileen Wall and after this there was no turning back for Waterford.

Four more points for Maria Delahunty and one further score for Aileen Wall followed for Waterford before the break with responses from Ellen Dowling, Grace Clifford and Róisín Byrne meant that Waterford returned to there dressing room under the Cusack Stand at the break holding a 1-9 to 0-5 lead.

Kildare opened the second half with a Mikaela McKenna point.

Waterford in the second half sent on Michelle Ryan very early in the half for Mary Foley and the Ballymacarbry player made a massive impact.

She pointed shortly after coming on and although it was cancelled out shortly afterwards by a Maria Moolick effort, Waterford continued to be the better of the two sides.

Michelle Ryan again pointed which was cancelled out with a brace from Róisín Byrne.

Sinead Ryan and Maria Moolick swapped points before

Michelle Ryan on of the great servants of the game finished to the net for a second Waterford goal with time ticking down and it was followed with a point from another fantastic servant – Elaine Power.

Late in the game Aisling Holton received a yellow card meaning that Kildare were going to end the game with only 14 players, and with a numerical advantage Waterford took advantage of the situation as Aileen Wall finished with a late goal for Waterford bringing her total for the afternoon to 2-2.

Just as in the camogie game with Lorraine Bray becoming the first female player to score with the aid of Hawkeye, history was made in this game as the Murray sisters, Emma, Aoife and Katie became the first triplets to win All-Irelands at Croke Park.

In both games Waterford players were the winners of the official Player of the Match award – Lorraine Bray in Camogie and Karen McGrath in Ladies Football and it would be easy to pick as the player that impressed most in September.

It would be easy also to pick the two respective captains – Caithriona McGlone in Camogie and Linda Wall in Ladies Football.

But both Waterford wins were team wins and there is no ‘I’ or ‘U’ in the word team.

In previous months, one person was picked out as the person that impressed most but in a month where there was two team wins, its only right not to pick one win out over the other and name both the Waterford Intermediate Camogie Team and the Waterford Intermediate Ladies Football team as the person or person that impressed most in the month of September when it comes to Ladies Sports in Waterford.

For the record, the full panel for both games was as follows:

Camogie: Deidre Brennan (Butlerstown), Kate McMahon (Butlerstown), Claire Whyte (Saint Anne’s), Vikki Falconer (Butlerstown), Charlotte Raher (Saint Anne’s), Jennie Simpson (Saint Anne’s), Iona Heffernan (Ferrybank), Trish Jackman (Gailltir), Lorraine Bray (Cappoquin), Caithriona McGlone (Lismore), Nicola Morrissey (Lismore), Beth Carton (De La Salle), Aisling Power (Cappoquin), Niamh Rockett (Saint Anne’s), Dawn Power (Dungarvan), Brianna O’Regan (De La Salle), Becky Kavanagh (Saint Anne’s), Claire Murphy (Saint Anne’s), Sibeal Harney (Saint Anne’s), Shona Curran (Lismore), Valerie O’Brien (Roanmore), Molly Curran (Brickeys), Saoirse Bonner (Saint Anne’s), Orla Flynn (Clonea), Elizabeth McGrath (Butlerstown), Jenny McCarthy (Cappoquin).
