Waterford come up short against Westmeath

Waterford Ladies Football team made the trek to Mullingar to face the home team Westmeath and like last week’s trip to Cavan they came up narrowly short with a five point defeat. In a game played in glorious sunshine in St Loman’s GAA, Waterford started off brightly with a point from Maria Delahunty. This was quickly cancelled out by a Leona Archibald point and in the 4th minute Lucy Mc Carton put the home team ahead with a point. Róisín Tobin put the Déise back in front with a well taken goal in the 7th minute but this merely spurred the midlanders into action with three points in quick succession, two from frees for Leona Archibald and one from centre back Fiona Claffey to put Westmeath back in front on 14 minutes. Ciara Blundell goaled for Westmeath, following a great passing movement to put 4 points between the sides with 18 minutes gone. Maria Delahunty narrowed the gap to three points with a point after 23 minutes but Leona Archibald replied in kind with a point for Westmeath in the 25th minute. Róisín Tobin pointed for Waterford in the 27th minute and Maria Delahunty got her third point just on the stroke of half time to leave two points between the teams at the break Westmeath 1-6 Waterford 1-4.

Like the first half Waterford opened brightly with a point from Michelle Ryan but Westmeath quickly took control with four unanswered points two from Leona Archibald and one each from Ciara Blundell and Laura Lee Walsh to leave them five points to the good entering the final quarter. Waterford refused to give up however and three good points, two from Maria Delahunty and one from Katie Murray left two points between the sides with ten minutes to go. Waterford were putting incessant pressure on the Westmeath defence and the Westmeath goal led a charmed life with at least two good goal chances for Waterford going a begging. Laura Lee Walsh steadied Westmeath nerves with a point and midfielder Karen Mc Dermott put a little more light between the teams with another Westmeath point. Maria Delahunty give Waterford some hope with a pointed 45 metre free and added another point to leave two between the teams with time running out. Waterford pressed forward in the dying moments searching for the goal that would give them three valuable league points but in true break away fashion Westmeath broke down the pitch and Tracy Dillon put the ball into the Waterford net to ensure that Westmeath would take a giant step towards semi-final qualification with a hard earned victory on the final score Westmeath 2-12  Waterford 1-10.Waterford’s final league game will be a home tie with Tyrone on Sunday next, venue and time to be confirmed.

Waterford Seniors narrowly defeated by Cavan

Waterford Lady footballers made the long trek to Breffni Park to play the home team in an important Division 2 LIDL National League football round 5 match on Sunday last and returned home empty-handed in the most agonising way possible. Forced to make a number of changes from the team line-out, Waterford set about their task in a positive manner, with three points coming courtesy of Maria Delahunty, Katie Murray and Róisín Tobin in the first ten minutes with Cavan’s only reply being a point from Aisling Sheridan. Michelle Ryan added a Waterford point in the 15th minute and Waterford had a numerical advantage at this stage with Claragh O Reilly being sin-binned. However the Déise girls were unable to take advantage of this and indeed went 15 minutes without a score.

The game turned on its head in a four minute period of the first half. In the 19th minute Aisling Doonan pointed a free and one minute later Donna English added another point to the Cavan total. In the 21st minute Aisling Sheridan got her sides opening goal and straight from the kick-out she repeated the dose to leave Cavan in front and in control on a score-line of Cavan 2-3 Waterford 0-4.Cavan turning a three point deficit into a five point lead in the space of four minutes. On the stroke of half time Maria Delahunty steadied the Waterford ship with a pointed free.

Waterford opened the second half brightly with a pointed free from Maria Delahunty, followed by a point from Aileen Wall to narrow the gap to two points. It was almost ten minutes before the next score of the game would come with both defence’s on top and the forwards on both teams guilty of missing some scoring chances. Maria Delahunty pointed a free and added one from play to level matters with 15 minutes remaining.  Maria Delahunty put Waterford back in front with a point from play in the 18th minute. Waterford were dealt a major blow a minute later when Róisín Tobin was sin-binned. Michelle Ryan extended Waterford’s lead in the 24th minute with a good point, but Cavan’s numerical advantage paid off in the 25th minute with a point from Aisling Sheridan followed by a point from Aisling Doonan to level matters with four minutes to go. Michelle Ryan put the Déise back in front and it looked to be the Déise’s day. It was not to be however Aisling Doonan levelled matters in time added on and to further add salt to the wounds added a pointed free to give Cavan victory and the three league points by the slimmest of margins on a final score Cavan 2-7 Waterford 0-12.This defeat leaves Waterford outside the semi-final places in what is proving to be an ultra-competitive division. Any four of seven teams can still make the semi-finals as there are five teams on nine points each and the next two Clare and Waterford have seven each so it is all to play for in the final two rounds when Waterford travel to Westmeath next Sunday and conclude their fixtures with a home match against Tyrone on Sunday 2nd April.

Waterford lined out as follows: Katie Hannon, Mairéad Wall, Rebecca Casey, Katie Murray (0-1), Deirbhile Nic Aodha, Caoimhe McGrath, Megan Dunford, Róisín Tobin (0-1), Hannah Power, Emma Murray, Nicola Fennell, Geraldine Power, Maria Delahunty (0-6) Michelle Ryan (0-3) and Lauren McGregor    Sub:  Aileen Wall (0-1)

Waterford Under 14  team qualifies for Munster final

Waterford under 14 team duly qualified for the Munster under14 Ladies final with a hard fought and well earned win over a dogged Clare side. In a game which ebbed and flowed Waterford found it hard to adjust to the all-weather pitch in University of Limerick and trailed Clare at half time on the score-line of Clare 3-1 Waterford 2-3.In the second half Waterford got on top early to go four points up entering the last quarter but Clare were very determined and not prepared to give up and reduced the deficit to a solitary goal with five minutes left on the clock. Waterford’s defence held firm and a good save by the Waterford keeper made sure that Waterford ran out winners on a two point margin. Final Score: Waterford 5-6 Clare 5-4.

Next up for the girls is a Munster final in May against the winners of the Clare/Limerick play off which takes place next week.

Ursuline Waterford secure historic All Ireland crown with emphatic win over Banagher

All Ireland Post Primary Junior B Final - Ursuline Waterford 3-16 Banagher Offaly 1-4

Just twelve months after a narrow defeat in the Junior C Munster Final the Ursuline Waterford were back in the winners enclosure with an impressive eighteen point victory over Banagher, Offaly in the Junior B All Ireland Final at St. Lachlainn GAA Freshford last Saturday. This is the Ursuline first All-Ireland final triumph and was fashioned with a superb display. It is hard to believe that this is only the Ursuline Second year competing in Post primary competition.

Ursuline Waterford won the toss and opted to play against a strong breeze in the opening half.  Waterford midfield pairing of Clodagh Carroll and Kate Lynch was simply majestic. It wasn't long before the Ursuline register their first score from Aoife Fitzgerald.  Banagher won a free shortly after and Chloe Reilly level the game.  It was nip and tuck from there on in, with the game level after 20mins 0-02 each. Player of the match Abby Flynn played the ball into Rachel Walsh who blasted the ball to the back of the net for the first goal. At half time the score was Ursuline Waterford 1-03 Banagher Offaly 0-04.  The defence was superb in the first half keeping Banagher forwards at bay.

Ursuline Waterford came out a transformed team and dominated throughout the second half with Shauna Farrell, Leah Sheridan and Lucy Hogan outstanding in defence with player of the match Abby Flynn dominating on the forty.  Aoife Fitzgerald secured the second goal and points were then registered by Ciara O Sullivan, Abby Flynn, Annie Fitzgerald, Clodagh Carroll and Kate Lynch. The Ursuline girls dominated the play from there on it and there was no coming back for the opposition.  Abby Flynn scored the third goal and it was always going to be a Ursuline win from there on it. The Offaly girls refused to give into defeat and registered a consolation goal from their star performer Chloe Reilly in the dying minutes of the game. It was a perfect performance by the Ursuline girls and one they will treasure for many years.  A special mention to Mr. Conor O Toole and Ms. Emilie Darmody who put in a massive effort into preparing these girls. This was a complete team performance and everyone played their part in the victory.  Player of the match was given to the outstanding Abby Flynn.
