Our opponents Gailltir came out strongly in the 2nd half and ran out winners 4-9 (21) to 3-18 (27). Well done to the girls for the commitment shown throughout the year to training and games. It was great to see Caoimhe back on the playing field again after last years injury lay off.

Deise Delight All-Ireland Champions

Waterford Ladies footballers made up for the heartache suffered in their last two appearances in Croke Park when they recorded a memorable win over Kildare in the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate final. Played in beautiful weather conditions the Deise girls showed heart, character and an ingrained desire to win to defeat a strong Lilywhite team who had been operating at senior level last year. In a whirl-wind opening sequence, Kildare drew first blood with a strong penetrating run by midfielder Aisling Holton led to a point being scored by full forward Maria Moolick in the 16th second. Waterford’s reply was instant with Aileen Wall tearing the defence to shreds and scoring a great point. This was followed by a pointed free in the 7th minute from Sinead Ryan to give Waterford the lead that they would not give up for the rest of the game. Maria Delahunty kicked the first of her six points in the 11th minute from a free when the Kildare goalkeeper was penalised for delaying the kick out. Kildare’s centre forward Roisin Byrne replied with a point in the 11th minute. Blue and white euphoria erupted all over Croke Park in the 12th minute when Aileen Wall scored a marvellous solo effort and rocketed the ball to the Kildare net. Ellen Dowling cut the deficit in the 14th minute with a point but Waterford’s reply was quick with a pointed free from Maria Delahunty when Grainne Kenneally was taken down on the edge of the square. From the kick out Grainne Kenneally was involved again when she robbed her marker of possession and fed Maria Delahunty who popped over another point from play. Grace Clifford kept the Kildare tally ticking over with a point but true to form it was cancelled out by Delahunty again on the end of a slick passing movement in the 21st minute. Aileen Wall stretched the lead to six in the 23rd minute and two points from Maria Delahunty followed by a point from Kildare’s Roisin Byrne meant that the Deise girls went in at half time leading by 1-9 to 0-4.

Kildare opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of the second half when substitute Mikaela Mc Kenna capitalised on an error and pointed. Waterford got back in scoring mode in the 10th minute with a point from substitute Michelle Ryan and Ryan was on hand at the end of a series of 13 hand passes to finish with a wonderful point in the 13th minute. Then followed Kildare’s best spell in the match with three unanswered points to cut the deficit to five with 13 minutes remaining. Sinead Ryan got another Waterford point following a great run and pass from Megan Dunford with 12 minutes to go. Maria Moolick cut the gap once again with a point but Michelle Ryan was in impressive form with a point in the 22nd minute. Michelle won a ball from the kick out and sent the Deise fans into wild delight when she buried the ball in the back of the net and Kildare’s hopes rapidly evaporated. Elaine Power burst through the defence to tack on yet another point to leave ten between the teams. Katie Hannon was then called into action when Maria Moolick burst through but the Ballyduff girl brilliantly saved the rocket and kept the Deise net intact. With two minutes to go Aileen Wall put the icing on the cake and capped a memorable performance for herself with a wonderful goal top leave the Deise All Ireland champions on the score line Waterford 3-14 Kildare 0-10. Waterford’s full back Karen McGrath was named TG4 Player of the Match but in truth there were many wonderful performances from the Deise girls today. The backs as a unit were solid giving a much vaunted Kildare attack no clear opportunity on goal. Captain Linda Wall led by example and was well supported by Megan Dunford, Karen Mc Grath, Emma Murray, Elaine Power and Michelle Mc Grath. Louise Ryan, Mairead Wall, Grainne Kenneally and Caoimhe Mc Grath kept a close eye on things in the middle sector of the field linking well with the forwards and tracking back to ensure no breaches of the Waterford goal. Mary Foley and Sinead Ryan were instrumental in setting up many fine scores for Aileen Wall, Maria Delahunty and Michelle Ryan and the rest of the subs Hannah Landers, Aoife Murray, Nicola Fennell and Nora Dunphy all played their part in this historic victory. A team is only as good as the panel members who push them all the way for a starting position and Ciara Kearney, Aoife Landers, Shauna Dunphy, Kate Mc Grath, Katie Murray and Emer Scanlon did exactly that.

Congratulations are due to manager Pat Sullivan and his back-room team of Noel O Connor, Trish Fitzgerald, Gary Collins, Lisa Cronin, Kealan O Neill and Colin Walsh for the meticulous preparation of the team. To the wonderful Waterford support both in Croke Park and back in Dungarvan for the home-coming a massive thank you. You were that 16th player when it was needed in the second half. The attendance at the Ladies final was an amazing 31,083 which is a record for any ladies sporting event in Europe this year. Well done to all concerned, an amazing year for Waterford’s ladies sport, two under 16 All Ireland titles in Camogie and Football and now two intermediate titles.

Déise Ladies Seek All-Ireland Double

All Waterford eyes will be firmly fixed on Croke Park again this weekend when the Waterford Kildare rivalry will be renewed, this time it is the turn of the lady footballers in the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Final as they attempt to emulate their Camogie counterparts in bringing further All Ireland glory back to the Deise. Waterford have qualified for the final by winning the Munster Intermediate championship for an unprecedented seven in a row and then despatching Sligo and Leitrim respectively in the All Ireland series.

This will be a close run affair, Kildare have been regraded from Senior status this season and have impressed in the Leinster campaign winning the title in style and saw off Wexford and Offaly in the All Ireland qualifiers. In the All Ireland semi final Kildare were very impressive scoring five goals against Offaly with sharp shooter Eadaoin Connolly netting a hat-trick for the Lilywhites. Maria Moolick and Ellen Dowling also add considerable skill to the forward line and will keep the Waterford defence busy. In goalkeeper Rebecca McGuirk and midfielder Aisling Holton they possess players of a very high standard who are capable of producing match winning performances.

Waterford, too, have many star players all over the pitch. Goalkeeper Katie Hannon is cool under pressure and is known to be able to score a penalty or two if the need arises. The backs have developed into a strong unit and with players of the calibre of Megan Dunford, the McGrath sisters Karen and Michelle, Elaine Power, Nora Dunphy and Aoife Landers they have the ability to keep the Kildare forwards quiet. In the middle third of the field the team has many hard-working players including the Wall sisters Linda and Mairead, Louise Ryan and Nicola Fennell. Waterford’s attack has been very impressive in the championship to date averaging over 2 goals and 16 points in their six championship matches to date and with forwards of the calibre of Sinead and Michelle Ryan, Shauna Dunphy, Aileen Wall, Hannah Landers, Grainne Kenneally, Maria Delahunty and Mary Foley the Kildare backs could be in for a torrid time on Sunday next.

This Waterford team has a good mix of experience and younger players in the squad. Kate McGrath, Mary Kate Morrissey, Emer Scanlon, Ciara Kearney, Caoimhe McGrath and the Murray triplets Katie, Emma and Aoife are relative newcomers to the panel, most having made their senior debuts this season but have had much success at provincial and All Ireland level with the county in the under- age grades and will not be found wanting in Croke Park on Sunday.

This a hard game to call but the Waterford team have prepared well under the guidance of Pat Sullivan and his backroom team and will not be found wanting . Support is vital on the day and the Waterford support will play an important part in becoming that “16th player” in helping to push the team over the line and reaching the Holy Grail. Tickets are available from www.tickets.ie and usual GAA outlets, Centra and Supervalu. Go on, take the bus, car or train to Croker and help #Bethe Diff. Be there when Linda Wall lifts the Mary Quinn Memorial Cup on behalf of the Deise girls.

Throw-in, in Croke Park on Sunday next is at 1:45 with Mel Kenny of Mayo in charge of proceedings.

Homecoming Meal for the Intermediate team

A post-match meal will be held for the team in Lawlor’s Hotel Dungarvan on Sunday night@9:00 pm. The meal will cost €20 and a limited number of tickets are available for anybody wishing to attend. Please contact any member of the County Board executive for tickets.

All Ireland Cups on Tour

What a hectic week it was for the All Ireland camogie team and their All Ireland cups since they captured the All Ireland Intermediate Title last week in Croke Park. Mighty McGlone Captains Waterford to All Ireland Glory

History was made once more for Waterford camogie and indeed for Lismore camogie in Croke Park as the Waterford Intermediate Camogie team overcame Kildare in the Liberty Insurance All Ireland Intermediate Final on Sunday last. Lismore camogie club were honoured to have Caithriona McGlone as team captain and to have her team mates Nicola Morrissey and Shona Curran playing a major part in capturing the historic All Ireland title.

The game its self began at a very slow pace for Waterford with Kildare registering the first score of the game with a goal on the third minute followed by two more points from them before Waterford’s Beth Carton got them on the score sheet on the thirteenth minute. Waterford began to settle into the game after this and some points from Lorraine Bray and Jennie Simpson reduced the margin to one point with five minutes remaining in the half. Shona Curran was introduced in replace of Dungarvan’s Dawn Power on the 25th minute and was playing at mid-field grabbed the sliotar and drove it into the forward line where Cappoquin’s Aisling power won and duly struck a whopper to the back of the Kildare net. This gave the Waterford side some great confidence going into the second half with a two point cushion.

The second half began with a 20m  free on the second minute of the half awarded to Waterford where youngster Beth Carton stood over the ball and struck a hard low ball which landed once more in the Kildare net. Things looked very bright at this stage for the Deise girls. Kildare tried hard but they could not get enough possession into their forward line and it took them 22 minute to register their first score of the half. Waterford drove on and finished the game on a score line of 2-09 to Kildare’s 1-05.

History was made and Waterford had won the All Ireland Intermediate title which entitles them to play at Senior level next year. Lismore are proud to have the captaincy (Caithriona McGlone). Also when Waterford won the Junior in 2011 Lismore also had the captaincy (Nicola Morrissey) and incidentally when Waterford won their first U16 title in 2003 Lismore once again had the captaincy (Laura Buckley), so more history to be added for the Lismore club.

Huge Congratulations to our three girls Caithriona, Nicola and Shona and the Waterford team and management and thanks to all who travelled on the day to support our girls.

Who is the standout Female Sports Star in Waterford for August.

You might think to pick one person out in a month as a monthly winner of a Sports Star Award, even one like this which there is nothing out of, and is only happening to try and highlight of some females from Waterford involved in sport is an easy one.

Think again.

Since January of this year, I have named a few females each month who have impressed in the month just ended, and named one person who I felt that their achievements are just that small bit above the rest.

As the months passed and more and more sports were happening the task of picking one over the other got tougher.

For the month of August to pick one over another was the most difficult.

Each name I thought about I would say to myself ‘she has done well for herself,’ but then I would think of someone else and I would think to myself ‘she has done well’ and would have had the same feeling about this person as I had for the last.

Looking back over the past few months and who was selected as the person that impressed most, many of the same names that were named in previous months are going to crop up again, and to be honest, those that have been a previous monthly winner and who impressed again in August, they are in with an excellent chance of becoming the first person to be selected twice.

There are also some new names that have been noticed for their achievements in the past month and there is also a new sport to get a mention.

For those that follow sport closely they will know that Wexford Youths Ladies Soccer Senior Soccer team in the past month took part in a tournament in Poland in an attempt to qualify for this year’s Women’s Champions League Competition.

The side did remarkably well in Poland winning two of their three games, finishing second in group seven narrowly missing out on a place in the final stages of the competition.

What some might not be aware of is that on the Wexford Youths panel was a number of players from Waterford.

Jessica Gleeson, a sister of Waterford Inter County Hurler Austin scored the only goal in ‘The Youth’s’ first game in the qualifiers as they beat Gintra Universitetas from Lithuania.

Jessica who was a part of different Waterford Camogie panels a few years back struck a magnificent goal hitting a free kick from thirty-five metres on sixty-seven minutes after a foul on Carol Breen who is also from Waterford.

‘The Youth’s’ second game in the qualifiers was a 6-0 loss to Polish side Medyk Konin but they made up for that loss in their final game easily accounting for Welsh side Cardiff Met on a 5-1 score line.

The above mentioned Carol Breen proved to be player of the match in this game hitting a hat trick and one more for good measure with the goals coming in the 3rd, 6th. 42th and 80th minutes. Becky Cassin hit Waterford’s fifth goal in that game on the half hour mark.

Maria Delahunty, a member of the Waterford Intermediate Ladies Football team was also involved with the Youths in Poland as was another Waterford player Rachel Hutchinson.

In Athletics it was another good month for Waterford athletes.

When it comes to Athletics in Waterford its possibly fair to say that Kelly Proper will be the one that will generate all the headlines.

August was another good month for the Ferrybank AC lady.

She travelled to Beijing with the Irish team for the World Championships.

She may have found the going that little bit tougher than usual at the championships but still did remarkably well finishing her heat of the 200 metres in what some might say was a disappointing sixth, but its worth remembering that she finished in a time of 23.28 seconds, just .04 of a second behind her seasons best time of 23.24 seconds which she ran again last month at Ninove in Belgium.

Prior to travelling to the championships she took part in the Glohealth National Senior Championships at the Santry Stadium where she took part in the 100 and 200 metre competitions, both of which she won, the 100 metre competition in a time of 11.75 seconds and the 200 metre competition in a tie of 23.81 seconds.

Its worth remembering that Waterford have more than one top class athlete and in the same competition, just two that impressed were Sorcha Murphy who finished joint second in the high jump with a leap of 1.65 metres while Cora Kennedy competed in the Hammer event but was unplaced.

Show jumping is something that gets few if any mentions here, but we are about to put that right.

The Dublin Horse Show took place at the RDS in August. While Ireland winning the Aga Khan Cup might be the highlight of the week, its worth remembering that there was plenty of other competitions over the course of the week and in these Waterford was well represented.

Sarah Kate O’Donovan was the winner at the Amateur Championships on Valenthina. She was also a winner of the same competition back in 2012 on board Knockenpower Ginger.

At the same competition Rebecca Monaghan won the supreme Young Horse championship with three year old filly Not a Lot, while Laura Connors won the 1.3metre young rider final on Just Jump with two seconds to spare over the rest of the field while Gemma Phelan also had a good week at Ballsbridge winning the five year old championship with one second to spare on the rest in the competition while she finished fourth in the six year old championship.

I doubt few will be shocked that Gaelic Games will get a mention this month and to be honest its very hard not to include Ladies Football and Camogie.

Maria Delahunty has already got a mention above for playing with Wexford Youths and gets another mention here.

She was outstanding for Waterford in their All-Ireland Quarter Final and Semi Final wins over Sligo and Leitrim.

In the quarter final she hit 0-9 against Sligo and followed it up with 0-6 against Leitrim.

But she was not the only player to impress in the white and blue shirt as Katie Hannon in goal was outstanding in both games and even scored a goal from a penalty against Sligo.

Others to impress in both games included Aileen Wall who was player of the game against Leitrim, Elaine Power, Linda Wall, Karen McGrath and Sinead Ryan to mention but just a few.

In Camogie it was a great month.

The County Intermediate team have followed their league final win over Laois earlier this year with an All-Ireland Final appearance against Kildare later this month.

The sides have met already in the competition and the game resulted in a good win for Waterford and when they clashed in the league semi final the outcome was the same. We only have to hope now that Kildare do not make it third time lucky on the biggest day of all.

In Waterford’s two games played in the intermediate championship last month there was several stand out performance with the likes of Beth Carton, Trish Jackman, Dawn Power, Aisling Power, Lorraine Bray, Niamh Rockett, Jenny Simpson and Shona Curran again to name but a few were outstanding.

And its not just in the intermediate grade that Waterford had a month to remember when it came to Camogie.

The Under 16’s contested a third All-Ireland Final in a row and retained the title won last year when they beat Dublin 2-8 to 1-7 at Nenagh.

To get to the semi final Waterford had a fantastic win over Meath winning 4-13 to 0-8 and in both games they had some fantastic performances from the likes of Kaiesha Tobin who finished as top scorer in both games hitting 4-4 against Meath and 1-3 against Dublin, Anne Corcoran, Faye Curley, Chloe Dempsey, Sinead Cunningham, Taylor Healy, Niamh Murphy, Aisling Madigan and Clodagh Curran again to mention but a few.

So who did that something special in August to get them named as the Female Sports Star of the month for August.

Any of the above could have won.

I seriously considered the likes of Trish Jackman, Maria Delahunty, Kaiesha Tobin, Aileen Wall, Katie Hannon, Beth Carton and Carol Breen.

But for this month the winner is not from this list.

The winner this month is involved with the G.A.A. and like in previous months has not been named yet.

I hear you say that most of the players that did stand out in August have been named. But not all are.

What most fail to remember is that the G.A.A. is more than about hurling and football, as well as their sister sports.

Handball is also part of the G.A.A.

To win her gold medal she bear Vera Aguier from Canada 21-1, 21-5, Linda Tully from Roscommon 21-11, 21-14, another player from Roscommon – Linda Connolly 21-16, 18-21, 11-9 and then Natasha Coughlan from Clare 21-2, 14-21, 11-5.

To win her silver medal with her doubles partner Kristina Rude from the USA, the pair beat Laura Mannion and Niamh Egan from Roscommon 21-1, 21-2 but lost to the two other Roscommon players she beat in the singles, Siobhan Tully and Linda Connolly 7-21, 14-21 in the final.
