Back to back Minor Titles for De La Salle, Saint Anne's Win B Title

De la Salle finish strongly in the Minor A to Claim back to back County titles for the first time

Those who follow camogie in Waterford know the achievements under age county teams have had over the last number of years winning Munster and All Ireland titles and how the underage club scene has gone from strength to strength. So last Saturdays Minor (A) Championship Final between De La Salle and Gailltir in WIT Carriganore Sport Campus had the makings of been a very competitive contest.  It was a fantastic final showing that Waterford Camogie has a very bright future ahead. A STORMING FINAL few minutes from De la Salle ensured that they claimed back to back Waterford Minor A titles for the first time.

With perfect weather and underfoot conditions both teams came into this final knowing that only a point separated them in the group stages of the completion earlier in the summer. De La Salle having won the toss lined out defending the campus end goal and playing against a light breeze from the throw in it was Gailltir who registered the first point of the game followed quickly by an equalising point from De La Salle. However the first half was to be all De La Salle’s from here on as Colette Hogan playing at centre back was cutting out supply to the Gailltir forwards. The pairing of Caoimhe Drohan and Courtney Healey dominated the mid-field area setting up De La Salle’s forward line who by the half time break had registered 2-7 to Gailltir’s 0-3.

Gailltir brought on Anne Corcoran just before the half time break and  made a number of positional changes at the start of the second half, in particular bringing Kate Lynch to mid-field. They  started the second half with serious intent, putting De La Salle on the back foot. Gailltir took the game to De La Salle registering some fine scores and with twenty minutes gone in the second half Gailltir had cut the deficit to three points.

With De La Salle now under pressure the positioning of Niamh Murphy behind the half back line cut out Gailltir’s ability to supply their inside forwards in particular Annie Fitzgerald who was now playing at full forward. In the closing period De La Salle settled the contest to win back to back Minor (A) championship titles with some fine scores finishing the game with 3-17 to Gailltir’s 2-11. It was a fantastic contest with bother teams leaving everything they had on the field.

Other performances of note De La Salle’s: Brianna O’ Reagan, Beth Carton, Abby Flynn (Player of the Match) Aisling Madigan, Emma Fitzgerald. Gailltir’s: Ciara Jackman, Leah Sheridan, Annie Fitzgerald, Clodagh Carroll.

De La Salle Panel: Brianna O’ Reagan, Katie Ryan, Taylor Healy, Rachel Butler, Megan O’ Connor, Courtney Healy (capt), Collette Hogan, Caoimhe Drohan (0-1), Niamh Murphy, Emma Fitzgerald, Chloe Dempsey, Katie O’Keeffe, Abby Flynn (2-2), Beth Carton (12), Aisling Madigan (1-2), Lucy Hogan, Patricia Farrell, Rachael Daniels, Clara Boland, Jade Phelan, Becky Roche, Toni Forristal.

Waterford Camogie Minor B County Final

St Annes   1-12 Clonea / St Mollerans  1-3

After a highly competitive first half, St Annes pulled away in a convincing manner after the interval and, but for an outstanding performance by Emma Norris in the combination’s goal, the score differential could have far greater.

Clonea / St Mollerans started with a slight wind advantage but struggled to convert chances into scores and relied on Aoife Fleming from 3 converted frees and a goal from Katie Norris on the stroke of half time to see them lead at the break 1:03 to 0:04. The combination missed two goal chances in that first half, which would have been a major boost to their cause and more appropriately demonstrated their superiority particularly in the second quarter. The St Anne’s scores came from Sibeal Harney, Rachel McDonald, Foran and Ciara Behan and they must have been happy going in at half-time, only two points down despite not playing to their potential.

The first 10 minutes of the second half as always are vital in a tight defensively dominated game like this and so it proved again as St Annes took a firm grip on proceedings around the centre of the field through their inter-county senior squad members Sibeal Harney and Saoirse Bonner and powered to a 1:06 to 1:03 lead, the goal coming from Rachel McDonald. The following 15 minutes saw a courageous defensive display from Clonea/St Mollerans as Emma Norris and the back-line in front of her as they repelled attack after attack, conceding only two points, before the floodgates opened eventually with St Annes scoring a further four points in the closing five minutes through Lauryn Foran (3) and Ciara Behan.

Best for St Annes were Aisling Allen, Saoirse Bonner, Roisin Dunphy, Rachel McDonald, Lauryn Foran, Ciara Behan and Player Of The Game Sibeal Harney.

Best for a youthful Clonea / St Mollerans were Emma Norris, Lauren Galvin, Aoife Hahessy, Keeley Corbett-Barry, Heather Hayes, Aoife Fleming and Niamh Cahill.

Scorers: St Annes   Ciara Behan (0-4), Rachel McDonald (1-1), Lauryn Foran (0-4), Sibeal Harney (0-1), Saoirse Bonner (0-1) and Shauna Foran (0-1)

St Molleran’s:  Aoife Fleming (0-3) and Katie Norris (1-0)

De La Salle are County Minor Camogie Champions

Congratulations & well done to our U-18 girls who won back to back minor A Championship titles with a 3-17 (26) to 2-11 (17) victory against Gailltir played at the WIT Carriganore Campus on Sat 29th Oct on a fine pitch in good weather conditions.

This game was played at a very fast pace with plenty of skill and scores on show from first to final whistle, with play swinging from end to end throughout the entire game. We led by 2-7 (13) to 0-3 at half time.

Our opponents came back at us in the second half narrowing the gap to 3 points at one stage but our girls showed their togetherness by pushing on again running out 9 point winners at the final whistle. Well done to both teams on a sporting tough encounter.

After the game the Waterford Camogie County Board Chairperson Ita Murphy presented the Johnny Flynn Memorial Cup to our captain Courtney Healy. Courtney thanked her team mates for all their commitment and hard work shown throughout the year, Rose Madigan on first aid, Micko Casey physio for all his hard work with the squad injury wise, mentors Decky Drohan, Derek Healy, Joey Carton and to all our supporters for attending games throughout the year, very much appreciated.

Courtney also thanked  our opponents Gailltir for a good game. This was a fine way to finish up the playing end of the season for us. This group of girls have have shown their togetherness down through the years winning an U-12 A title in 2010, U-14 A in 2012, U-16 A in 2014 & U-18 A in 2016. With only 4 of the panel overage for next year’s minor age group this is a fair achievement by this group of girls. The player of the final award went to the tremendously talented Abby Flynn scoring 2-2 from play.

Panel: Brianna O'Regan, Katie Ryan, Taylor Healy, Rachel Butler, Niamh Murphy, Colette Hogan, Megan O Connor, Courtney Healy (captain), Caoimhe Drohan 0-1, Chloe Dempsey, Beth Carton 0-12, Emma Fitzgerald, Katie O'Keeffe, Abby Flynn 2-2, Aisling Madigan 1-2, Subs: Lucy Hogan for Katie Ryan injury 25mins, Rachael Daniels for Katie O'Keeffe half time, Patricia Farrell, Becky Roche, Clara Boland, Jade Phelan, Toni Forristal.

Another County Title for Modeligo Camogie Club

Our U13 Camogie squad travelled to Kill GAA Grounds on Sunday morning, October 11th to face Gaultier in the "A" County Final.

This game was due to have been played two weeks previously but was cancelled due to heavy rain that morning, but this time around, conditions were ideal for this final.
The game itself was a very close battle between two very evenly matched sides & don't be fooled into thinking that the low score line meant that this game wasn't entertaining. It was in fact end to end stuff with both teams giving it their all.

The early exchanges saw Gaultier lay siege to the Modeligo goal but some absolutely solid defending from Modeligo held out all of this pressure.

As the game went on, our girls gradually started to get the upper hand & the accuracy of Mairéad O'Brien from frees saw Modeligo lead by 6 points going into the last few minutes.

A Gaultier goal made it a very nervous end to the game, but as they piled pressure on, the Modeligo defence held out each attack.

Mairéad fired over another free to open the lead to 4 points but again, Gaultier came forward to earn a close range free. The well struck shot was driven just over the crossbar. Leading up to these final moments, a fine save from Chloe Power, along with some staunch defending from Ellen O'Byrne; Anna Hickey; Emma Hickey (Kilbrien); & in particular, Lauren Flynn, all led the way to victory & when the girls cleared one last attack, there were scenes of unbelievable excitement - & a bit of relief - at the final whistle.

After the game, joint captains Lauren Flynn & Chloe Power accepted the trophy on behalf of all involved.

The achievement of these girls to win the U12 "B" title in 2015 & now to go on & win the U13 "A" title this year is just outstanding & great credit is due to each one of them for their efforts as they have written another chapter in our clubs history. It also cannot go without mentioning the huge amount of work put in by their coaches Tyler & Katie & we congratulate them on their success with this brilliant group of girls.

Congratulations!

Congratulations from all in Lismore Camogie Club to the Lismore Hurling team who captured the Western Intermediate Title on Friday night last after beating Modeligo. The Lads now go on to play Dunhill in County final on Friday night. Best of luck Lads!

Modeligo are Under 16 Div.2 County Camogie Champions.

Our U16 Camogie squad travelled to Dunhill GAA Grounds on Saturday, October 15th last to face Lismore in the "B" County Final.

This game was the third meeting of these sides in this campaign, & despite the poor weather forecasted for the day, conditions were ideal for this final.
The game itself was a very close battle between the two sides in the opening exchanges.
Lismore took an early lead before Mary Kate equalised with a free, Lismore added a second before Máiréad levelled again but a goal from Niamh put daylight between the sides before the break.

Modeligo made a couple of positional changes during the course of the game which seemed to make the difference. Mary Kate Curran switching with Angela Walsh from Centre-back to midfield suited both players as they were both dominant in their changed positions.

Máiréad O'Brien roamed out into open play from her corner forward position which meant Modeligo won the greater share of the lose ball in the middle third of the pitch & this benefited Shauna Power at full forward as the steady supply of ball led to numerous chances which yielded a total of 3-2 from play.

As the game went on, our girls gradually started to get the upper hand & goals from saw Modeligo run out convincing winners in the end.

Credit is due to Lismore as they battled to the end & were kept in contention for a long period by some fine saves by their 'keeper Kelly Ryan, while Mary O'Brien worked tirelessly at midfield.

Understandably, there were scenes of unbelievable excitement at the final whistle as a year of hard work had brought its reward.

After the game, Modeligo captain Niamh Reddy accepted the trophy on behalf of all involved from Waterford Camogie Board Chairperson, Ita Murphy.

The achievement of these girls to win the U16 "B" title this year is just outstanding & great credit is due to each one of them for their efforts as they have written another chapter in our clubs history. It also cannot go without mentioning the successful year in general that our Camogie club have had, contesting 3 county finals & winning 2, as well as participating in the Féile Competition & also fielding a Minor side for the first time, so I think it's fair to say congratulations to all involved on their success with these brilliant groups of girls.

Modeligo Panel: Rhona Drohan, Tara Hickey, Anne Marie O’Brien, Isobel Sheehan, Aoife O’Byrne, Mary Kate Curran, Aoife O’Donovan, Aoife Dee, Angela Walsh, Gillian Whelan, Tara Fraher, Lydia Troy, Mairead O’Brien, Shauna Power, Niamh Reddy, Cathryn O’Brien, Emily O’Mahony, Kate Hickey, Jessica Burke, Áine Walsh, Tess Curran, Ellen O’Byrne, Lauren Flynn.

LISMORE GIRLS LOOSE OUT FOR FOUR IN A ROW

Lismore Senior Camogie Team lost out in their bid for four in a row of senior championship titles on Saturday last October 1st when they took on Gall Tir Senior camogie team in the senior County final in Carraiganore. Lismore and Gall Tir met earlier in the championship when the game ended in a draw. As the Lismore girls were ahead in score difference ended up in the final and had to await the result of the Cappoquin V Gall Tir semi-final to determine who were Lismores opponents in the final, this game ende in a comprehensive win for the Gall Tir girls.

Throw in for the County final was set for a 3.30pm start and it was Gall Tir got on the score board with a point in the second minute, but Lismores Nicola Morrissey opened the scoring for them with a point a minute later, but the  Gall Tir girls were in fine form and were four points to one ahead in the first quarter before Caithriona Mc Glone scored her sides second on the fifteenth minute. Gall Tir crashed a fine goal to the back of the Lismore net before Lismore started to come into the game and scored three points to one in the next ten minutes, but it was Gall Tir had the last say of the half ending the score line of the half Lismore 0-5 Gall Tir 1-6.

It was Lismore who came out with all guns blazing in the second half and held Gall Tir to score one point to Lismores 1-1 (goal courtesy of Caithriona McGlone) for the first ten minutes of the half, but the Gall Tir girls kept puttting pressure on and pulled away to win the match on the final score of Gall Tir 2-11 Lismore 1-6.

It was the end of the champions reign for the Lismore girls.

A sincere thanks to the panel of girls for all the entertainment that they provided over the year and team manager Brendan Landers and selector Sinead Bennett along with their backroom staff.
