Waterford Under 14 Ladies pip Clare in thrilling final

Waterford under 14 ladies team overcame Clare in the Munster C final played in Mallow GAA complex on Saturday last after a hard fought battle in which no quarter was asked or given by either team. When the teams last met in the round robin series of games back in February a single score separated the teams with Waterford victorious by a goal. The final was even closer with both teams level at the end of normal time and Waterford held their nerve in the extra time to come out on top by a single point. Clare opened the more brightly and raced into a four point lead in the first five minutes with a well taken goal by Aoibhinn O Loughlinn. Waterford clawed their way back into the game with a brace of points and a well finished goal by Na Déise player Mairead O Brien to leave it all square on 1-3 apiece after 21 minutes. Clare goaled again courtesy of Allannah Mc Namara  and added four points without reply to leave the Banner County well in command at half time on the score line Clare 2-7 Waterford 1-3.

Waterford opened the second half with much more intent and Mairead O Brien and Hayley Phelan brought the game to life with two well taken goals in the space of six minutes to leave the bare minimum between the teams with Clare still a point ahead. Any thoughts that Clare would fold and Waterford would run out easy winners were quickly dispelled with Clare scoring five unanswered points to leave six points between the teams with time running out. Waterford struck back with their never say die attitude and were rewarded with goals from Aoife Fitzgerald and a third from Mairead O Brien in injury time to leave it with Clare hanging on by two points. In the 7th minute of injury time Waterford supporters were in rapture with a goal by Sheena Mc Guckian to leave the Déise girls one point in front 6-3 to Clare’s 2-14.Not to be outdone Clare showed extreme bravery and got an equalising point with the last kick of the game to leave it all square in a pulsating encounter Waterford 6-3 Clare 2-15.

Waterford opened the first period of extra time with a goal from Maeve Daly and a point from Aoife Fitzgerald to leave four between the sides at half time of extra time. The second period of extra time was only two minutes old when Waterford goalkeeper Roanmore’s Maeve Williams made a hero of herself with a brilliant penalty save to keep Waterford in front. Clare rallied yet again and with two minutes remaining were rewarded with a goal and pushed on for an equaliser but Waterford’s defence held firm and repelled all Banner attacks and ran out winners of a remarkable final by the minimum margin Waterford 7-4 Clare 3-15. Waterford captain Aoife Fitzgerald received the shield to tremendous applause from all present and Waterford midfielder Ballymacarbry’s Brigitta Valuenta was a worthy winner of player of the match.

Lismore Seniors Loose out in the Denny Buckley League Final

The scenic village of Stradbally was the venue for the Denny Buckley League final on Saturday last at a 4.30 throw in.

It was Lismore who stamped their authority when Caithiona McGlone struck to the back of the St. Annes net from the throw in and indeed were well on top for the next 10 minutes holding St. Annes scoreless for this time frame. It was 1-3 to Lismore to St. Anne's no score before Niamh Rocket pointed from a free in the tenth minute. St. Annes began to settle into the game at this stage and it was tit for tat between both sides regarding scores. Caithriona once more raised the green flag on the 20th minute. Jenny Simpson raised the green flag for her side  on the 23rd and again on the 26th minute. Nicola Morrissey and Johanna Houlihan had the last spoils of the half with a point each leaving the half time score Lismore 2-8 St. Anne's 2-4.

The first 11 minutes of the second half belonged to St. Anne's scoring 1-5 in this time frame without reply, with the score at this stage St. Annes 3-9 Lismore 2-8. Nicola Morrisseys free on the 11th minute settled the Lismore side and began to come back into it . Lismore were three points down on the 45th minute until Lismore substitute Emma Power struck a long range ball to the back of the St. Anne,s net drawing the game. 1 minute later a long range ball once again struck by Aoife Hannon which everyone thought was gone over was debated by the two umpires was ruled wide by the referee. St.Annes scored a point from the ensuing puck out giving St. Annes the lead. Nicola Morrissey scored 2 minutes later drawing the game once more followed by a another point from St. Annes with 5 minutes remaining. Nicola scored the next point once more drawing the game. Time nearly up everyone there thought a draw might be the result but St. Annes won a free a minute into injury time in which Niamh Rockett duely converted putting her side ahead. The final whistle was blown and the Denny Buckley Cup was awarded to St. Annes.

Na Déise take Under 16 ‘B’ Ladies Football Title

The first final of the 2016 calendar took place in the last week. First up was the B final which was played in the Blackwater Community School pitch in Lismore between Na Déise and Ballyduff. This was a very good game of football with Na Deise settling to the task from the word go against a younger and somewhat nervous Ballyduff side. Leading at half time by 2-8 to 2-2 Na Deise were in control but credit to the Ballyduff girls they never gave up and produced many anxious moments for the Na Deise defence. The Na Deise defence well marshalled by Anne Marie O Brien ably aided in midfield by Mary Kate Curran and Emily O Mahoney up front tacked on scores at vital times in the game to keep Na Deise in front and in control and despite the efforts of a hard-working Ballyduff backline and excellent goalkeeping from Rosie Landers ran out deserving winners in the end on a score line of Na Déise 3-16 Ballyduff 2- 5

‘C’ Title for Erin’s Own

Erin’s Own clinched their first under 16 county title in Kilgobnet GAA grounds on Sunday morning last with a hard earned win over Ballysaggart. Erin’s Own were quickly out of the blocks and got two goals in quick succession but to give Ballysaggart credit they refused to let these goals rattle them and were trailing at half time  on the score line Erin’s Own 2-3 Ballysaggart 0-3.

In the second half scores were at a premium and Ballysaggart were back in the game with a well worked goal. The game ebbed and flowed from end to end and a well taken goal late on by Erin’s Own Abbie Flynn ended the game as a contest with the city team winning on a final score Erin’s Own 3-6 Ballysaggart 1-4.

This was a very entertaining game with many outstanding performances on both sides Abbie Flynn excelled on the Erin’s Own team with some wonderful scores including a free off the ground from 35 meters and was well assisted by her colleagues captain Katie O Keeffe, Aisling Madigan, Eva Daniels, Lucy Hogan, Patricia Farrell and Cathy Hartnett.Ballysaggart played well but were hampered by two injuries at vital times in the game and had many outstanding players on view including Katie Meagher at centre back ,Eva O Donoghue in goals who made a string of wonderful saves and Sophie Landers and Emily Coughlan.

Gaultier and Stradbally serve up ‘A’ Final Thriller

In the A final Gaultier and Stradbally served up an exciting game of football, the result of which was in doubt until the final whistle. Stradbally opened the scoring with a point but the Gaultier girls hit back playing some excellent possession football with four points on the trot to take a commanding lead but any notion that this was going to be an easy win was quickly dispelled with a well finished goal by Maggie Boylan to rock Gaultier. The girls from the East powered back into the game with a goal and a point from Annie Fitzgerald but the reply was swift and decisive from the Stradbally girls with a second goal to leave the bare minimum between the sides at half-time Gaultier 1-5 Stradbally 2-1.

The second half, produced football of the highest order, with the Gaultier girls picking off their points.  Stradbally not to be outdone answered in the best possible fashion with a brilliant goal and the game was in the melting pot when Maggie Boylan coolly slotted home a penalty to put Stradbally back in front.Gaultier though rocked by this goal showed great heart and determination and were rewarded with a goal of their own and a brace of points to go back in front by two points with time running out. Stradbally laid siege to the Gaultier goal in the final stages in an effort to get the all important winning score and it took two great interceptions by Gaultier full back and captain Emma Flynn to ensure that the cup was on its way to the far east of the county as they held out in a welter of excitement on a final score Gaultier 2-12 Stradbally 4-4.

There were some excellent performances on both sides who served up a cracker of a game. Maggie Boylan, Sheena Mc Guckian, Sarah Mullaney, Megan Foran, Róisín Dunphy, Hayley Keane and Ellen Boylan all impressed for Stradbally. For the winners Annie Fitzgerald, Aoife Fitzgerald, Leah Maher, Shauna Fitzgerald and Emma Flynn shone on a day when the real winner was Ladies Football played at a very high level of skill.

Our thanks to the Kilgobnet GAA club for the use of their wonderful facilities and to Mary Fahey who had everything in pristine order for the matches.

Old rivals serve up a summer treat

There were scenes of jubilation in Stradbally GAA  on Saturday evening last May 21st as St. Annes Camogie Captain Claire Whyte  lifted the Denny Buckley Cup after defeating eastern rivals Lismore in an epic battle.  This game was always going to be a thrilling game of camogie with over ten senior county players playing on both sides, Indeed  it lived up to this expectation on Saturday last and it was enthralling match.

On a Sunny but windy afternoon in Stradbally it was Lismore who won the toss and opted to play against the breeze.  It was Lismore’s Aoife Hannon who registered the first point of the game shortly followed by a fantastic goal from Caitriona McGlone, within six minutes Lismore had outscored their opponents to 1-03 to no score.  Niamh Rockett then won a free and converted the free to give St. Annes their first score of the game on the eighth minute of the game.  Niamh Rockett got St. Annes next score with a fantastic point from play. Lismore dominated the next ten minutes particularly Nicola Morrissey who was outstanding in midfield. At one point Lismore were six points ahead with another fantastic goal from Caitriona McGlone and points from Aoife Hannon, Nicola Morrissey and Johanna Houlihan.  St. Annes started to fight back when Jenny Simpson rattled the net on the 23 minute.   This gave the St. Annes player great confidence and shortly after Jenny found the net again leaving the score at half time 2-04 to St. Annes Lismore 2-08.The second half began with St. Annes coming out of the blocks first courtesy of fantastic from Jenny Simpson, followed by a Charlotte Raher point from play. The first fifteen minutes were completely dominated by St. Annes.  Charlotte Raher scored a fantastic goal on the 12 minute and it put St. Annes ahead for the first time.  St. Annes were well on top at this stage and had kept Lismore scoreless for the first fifteen minutes of the second half.  Lismore started to fight back with the next three points coming from Nicola Morrissey.  The St. Anne’s goal keeper misjudged a high ball which resulted a goal for Lismore.  The game at this point was level. It got very tough from here on and it was an epic battle right to the end. It was with sheer determination that the St. Annes girls held on and fought to capture the Inaugural Denny Buckley Cup Final score reading St. Annes 3-13 Lismore 3-12.

There were outstanding performances on both sides. Charlotte Raher, Niamh Rockett, Sibeal Harney, Sinead Cummins and Jenny Simpson were outstanding for the winners. For Lismore Caitriona McGlone, Nicola Morrissey and Ellen Curran were the stand out players. It was a fantastic game from start to finish keeping the supporters on the edge of their seats right till the final whistle.  The inaugural Denny Buckley Senior League memorial Cup was presented to Claire Whyte captain of St. Annes by Ita Murphy.  Ita Murphy congratulated both teams on their efforts during the match and thanked both sets of supporters for adding atmosphere to the game.

Waterford win under 16 C Camogie Munster Final

Our Under 16c travelled to a sun swept Mallow last Sunday 15th of May for their Munster Final against Kerry.  Waterford got the better start dominating play from the throw in.  Within minutes of the throw in Megan Foran scored a fantastic goal and minutes lately registered a point, shortly after Lehane Sheehan rattled the net with a fantastic strike. After 20mins Waterford were clearly in the driving seat putting eight between the sides.  However Kerry made some changes bringing back two forwards to act as sweepers and  soon found their feet scoring five points without reply forcing Waterford management to make a couple of positional changes  at half time.   Half time score: Waterford 2-03 Kerry 0-06. The Waterford girls came out all fired up dominated play in the 2nd half and were just too strong for Kerry, so much so that Waterford management emptied the bench giving some of the girls some valuable match time. There were some very impressive outstanding performances. Lucy Hogan in full back commanded the back line.  Hannah Flynn was outstanding in the centre back position. Margaret Ann Boylan dominated midfield, Ciara O Sullivan,  Caoimhe Timmons, Megan Foran, Isabelle Wade, Ciara Behan and Georgia Harris were outstanding in the forwards.  . Well done girls on a great win it was a fantastic team performance.  Overall there were ten clubs represented on the team.

Waterford: 1. Leah O’Donoghue (Gaultier) 2. Mackenzie Doyle (An Rinn) 3. Lucy Hogan (De la Salle) 4. Dearbhla Ormonde (Cappoquin) 5. Shauna Farrell (Butlerstown), 6. Hannah Flynn (Gaultier) 7. Angela Walsh (Modeligo) 8. Margaret Ann Boylan 0-02 (Portlaw), 9. Roisin Dunphy (St.Annes) 10. Ciara O’Sullivan 0-3 (Gaultier)  11. Shauna Power (Modeligo). 12.  Caoimhne Timmons (An Rinn) 13. First Club Camogie trophy of 2016 belongs to Portlaw

Junior League final:  Portlaw 2-04   Clonea  1-02

The first camogie title of 2016 was won this past weekend when Portlaw and Clonea played out an entertaining Junior League final at St. Molleran's ground in Carrick. This was a great achievement for Clonea in reaching the final in the first year the club has featured at adult level but in a match that they were leading at halftime it was the much more experienced Portlaw team that won the title on a score of 2-04 to 1-02.

Playing conditions were excellent with the sun shining in Carrick and Clonea playing with the wind in the first half. Right from the throw-in Clonea were probing the Portlaw defence and Clonea's Katie Norris was unlucky not to open there scoring early on when her shot just sailed wide of the upright. The Clonea team continued to pressure the Portlaw goal and were rewarded with a goal after ten minutes when Katie Norris was at hand to fire into the net.

Portlaw responded with some good pressure of their own and reduced the deficit when a Ciara O'Connor free sailed over the bar. Aided by the slight wind, Clonea continued their pressure and next to score was Mickaela Houlihan when she pointed from play. Clonea continued pressurising the Portlaw defence but could not convert their chances coupled with the high workrate of the Portlaw defence and in particular Portlaw's Amy McGrath whose performance in both halves contributed to the final result. Clonea possession could only add one additional point to their tally when a Ciara Dunphy free was converted to leave the halftime score at 1-02 to 0-01 in Clonea's favour.

The second half proved to be all Portlaw's and they reduced the deficit after five minutes when Laura Corcoran fired over followed by another point to leave them trailing by two points. Clonea attacks were dealt with by the Portlaw defence and mid way through the half, Portlaw took the lead when Jade Morrissey evaded her marker and scored a goal. Portlaw converted a further goal from Anita Power and a point from Ciara O'Connor to have a commanding lead in the last five minutes.

Clonea continued competing but the entire Portlaw team were working to prevent Clonea possession turning into scores. Late on Clonea were awarded a 20 meter free and Aoife Fleming fired a powerful shot at goal but was blocked and the follow up was saved by Louise Burns in the Portlaw goal. Shortly after the final whistle was blown and Portlaw's captain Sarah Fitzgerald was presented with the trophy by Ita Murphy representing Waterford Camogie watched on by a sizeable group of Portlaw supporters.

Congratulations to both teams on their efforts during the match and to both sets of supporters for adding atmosphere to the game.

Waterford Senior Ladies narrowly lose to Cork

Waterford senior ladies opened their campaign with a six point defeat to All Ireland senior champions Cork with a very gritty and determined performance in Fermoy on Saturday last. Waterford were first out of the blocks but recorded two wides in the first two minutes before Orla Finn pointed a free for the Rebelettes in the 3rd minute. Waterford then took over and put three points on the board courtesy of captain Sinead Ryan in the 8th minute, Aileen Wall in the 10th and Maria Delahunty in the 12th minute. This good work was undone in the 16th minute when a Waterford attack broke down and a speculative shot by Cork centre forward Áine O Sullivan deceived Waterford goalie Katie Hannon and ended up in the back of the net. Two minutes later O Sullivan extended Cork’s advantage to two points with a well-taken point. Refusing to lie down Waterford rallied and a point from Maria Delahunty followed by one from Michelle Ryan levelled matters in the 23rd minute. Cork roared back with two four unanswered points, two frees from Orla Finn and two excellent score from play by Midleton’s Orlagh Farmer left the Cork team in front at half time on the score-line Cork 1-6 Waterford 0-5.

Waterford opened the second half with a flourish and it took a timely interception by Briege Corkery to prevent a Maria Delahunty goal in the 5th minute which would surely have driven the Déise girls on.Orla Finn kicked two more frees for the Cork girls to stretch the lead to six but credit the Waterford girls they never gave up and two points from centre forward Maria Delahunty narrowed the gap to four with nine minutes remaining. Cork closed out the game with two final points by their top-scorer Áine O Sullivan but Waterford had two final efforts on goal both of which were narrowly blazed wide which on another day could just as easily have rattled the net.

Waterford who were without injured trio Louise Ryan, Nicola Fennell and Caoimhe Mc Grath were competitive throughout the game and great defensive work ensured that Cork had to fight for every one of their scores. With a little more composure in front of goals the many chances created could have been converted into scores, Waterford kicked a total of fourteen wides and certainly had the All Ireland senior champions and LIDL Division 1 winners worried for long periods of the game. Next up for the Déise is a match v Kerry at the end of June.

WATERFORD: K Hannon; M Dunford, M McGrath, L Wall; A Mullaney, M Wall, H Power; E Murray, G Kenneally; R Tobin, M Ryan(0-2), K Murray; M Delahunty(0-3), S Ryan(0-1), A Wall(0-1).

Subs: L McGregor for Tobin (36), C Hurley for S Ryan (49), L  Devine for M Ryan (52), S Dunphy for McGregor (53).

CORK: M O’Brien; M Ambrose, B Stack, E Meaney; V Foley, D O’Reilly, R Phelan; A Walsh, B Corkery; R Buckley, Á O’Sullivan(1-3), O Farmer(0-2); R Ní Bhuachalla, H Looney, O Finn(0-5,4f).

Déise delight as seniors pip Tipp in a thriller

In what could only be described as a titanic struggle Waterford ladies football team overcame Tipperary by the narrowest of margins with a last gasp one point win to annex the LIDL Division 3 title. Maria Delahunty’s amazing free from out on the wing gave Waterford victory and promotion to Division 2 after an enthralling game of football played at an electrifying pace. Waterford opened the more brightly of the two teams and had three points on the board courtesy of Sinead Ryan and Maria Delahunty before Tipp roared into the game with a well taken goal by Mairead Morrissey. Sinead Ryan put the Déise back in front in the 14th minute only for Aisling Moloney to cancel it out with a Tipperary point.

Waterford hit another purple patch with three unanswered points from Linda Wall, Aileen Wall and Katie Murray only for the Tipp girls to hit back with four points of their own, two from Mairead Morrissey and one each from Edel Hanley and Aisling Moloney to leave Tipp. Waterford weathered the storm and a great goal from midfielder Katie Murray and a point from player of the match in the last minute of the first half meant that Waterford went to the dressing room with a two point advantage 1-7 to 1-5.

Tipperary started the second half well and it took two great saves from Katie Hannon to preserve Waterford’s lead. Gillian O Brien and Aileen Wall traded points in the 4th and 6th minutes before Aisling Moloney brought it back to a one point game in the 9th minute. Katie Murray and substitute Michelle Ryan stretched Waterford’s lead but two points from Edith Carroll and Gillian O Brien left one point between the teams with 15 minutes to go. Waterford were rocked with an injury to Louise Ryan which led to a long stoppage but substitute Nicola Fennell made an immediate impact when she set up Sinead Ryan for a point to put two between the teams with 10 minutes to go. A determined run from Lorraine O Shea led to the Tipp midfielder pointing to once again leave the bare minimum between two great teams. Maria Delahunty edged Waterford further in front with a point with six minutes to go.

However Tipperary were not finished and two points from centre forward Mairead Morrissey left it all square with two minutes left on the clock. It looked like extra time was looming but there was to be a final twist in the tail and it was Maria Delahunty that clinched it for Waterford as the final hooter sounded with that amazing free from 30 metres out to ensure Waterford were crowned league champions. Waterford now go on to face Cork in the first round of the senior championship on Saturday next in Fermoy.

Under 16’s comeback falls narrowly short in Munster Final

Waterford’s under 16 ladies team narrowly failed to take Munster final honours in a fine open game of attacking football against near neighbours Tipperary on Saturday last in Mallow. Two goals from Tipperary attackers Róisín Daly and Sarah Delaney left seven points between the teams despite three points from Dungarvan’s Kaiesha Tobin and one from her club mate Sarah Lacey at half time with the Premier County leading on the scoreline of Tipperary 2-5 Waterford 0-4.

In the second half Tipperary continued to attack and put points on the scoreboard to leave the Premier well in control ahead by seven points with twelve minutes remaining. Indeed it could have been much more only for the brilliance of Waterford’s goalie Rosie Landers from Ballyduff who made two outstanding saves to keep Waterford in the game. Waterford hearts refused to give in and began to reel Tipperary in at the death and showed tremendous character. With two minutes to go the Deise girls were rewarded with a goal from Keeley Corbett Barry and laid an onslaught on the Tipperary goal in search of an equaliser. Tipp broke away and scored the all important insurance point that broke Waterford hearts to leave the final score Tipperary 2-11 Waterford 1-10 in a pulsating encounter. Waterford’s goalie Rosie Landers was a deserving winner of the player of the match with her numerous wonderful saves.

Hard luck to Johnny Troy and his management team and a wonderful group of girls who gave everything for the cause and we wish Tipperary all the best in the All Ireland semi finals.

Minors take Munster Crown

Waterford minor ladies football team lifted the Munster title with an emphatic win over a game Limerick team in Charleville on Monday last. Waterford started in whirlwind fashion with three points on the board before Limerick got their only score of the first half a point from play in the 11th minute. The Deise girls took control with a 13th minute goal from Katie Murray and nine unanswered points shared between Ciara Hurley, Katie Murray, Aoife Murray and Chloe Fennell left daylight between the teams with the half time score line reading Waterford 1-12 Limerick 0-1

In the second half Waterford intensity levels dropped somewhat and Limerick aided by a strong breeze came more into the game with an 8th minute goal from Niamh O Keeffe but Waterford made sure not to let matters slip with three points from Katie Murray, Ciara Hurley and Chloe Fennell before Lia Nic Craith put the icing on the cake with a well taken goal in the last minute of the game to leave the final score Waterford 2-15 Limerick 1-4. Captain Katie Murray was presented with the cup and hard working Chloe Fennell was a well deserved recipient of the player of the match award.  A semi final meeting with Connacht champions Roscommon awaits the team in July.
