Waterford Ladies maintain unbeaten start in National League

Following on from their exploits when they managed a hard-earned draw away to Clare, Waterford maintained their unbeaten start to the LIDL National Football League Division 2 campaign with a deserved but very hard earned win over Laois. Played on an excellent surface in WIT Arena, Laois were first out of the blocks with an early point in 30 seconds from corner forward Caoimhe Simms who hit a pile driver which barely grazed the top of the crossbar to give the O Moore county an early lead. Waterford quickly got into their rhythm with a pointed free from Lauren McGregor in the 3rd minute, followed by a well-taken goal from full forward Aileen Wall a minute late. These two forwards got in on the scoring act in the 11th and 12th minutes with a point from Aileen Wall followed by a goal from Lauren McGregor to leave Waterford comfortably in front by seven points 2-2 to 0-1. Aileen Wall then got her third score of the game, a point, to extend Waterford’s lead to eight at the end of the first quarter.

Laois were shocked by this whirl-wind Déise start and made some changes to their defence, bringing on Laura Nerney for Maggie Murphy and this proved to be an instant success with two points in the 16th and 17th minutes courtesy of Clare Conlon and Meaghan Dunne. Lauren McGregor added to the Waterford tally in the 18th minute with a well-taken point but Laois who were improving steadily as the game went on replied with a point of their own from accurate free-taker Clare Conlon before substitute Laura Nerney showed her worth with a great goal. Lauren McGregor steadied Waterford nerves with a pointed free in the 25th minute but Megan Dunne quickly replied for Laois with two points in the 26th and 27th minutes to narrow the gap to two points. The gap was cut to the bare minimum with another Dunne free before two good points from play by Lauren McGregor and Nicola Fennell left the Déise girls three points to the good playing with the advantage of a strong wind in the first half on the score-line Waterford 2-7 Laois 1-7.

Waterford started the second half against the wind which had freshened during the break and down a player due to a sin-binning and it was Laois who made the most of this with two points from Noirín Kirwan and Caoimhe Simms in the 10th minute to bring it back to a one point game. It looked like Waterford were in major trouble but with a number of astute substitutions Katie Murray, Chloe Fennell and Hannah Landers were all introduced to telling effect and this gave the Waterford ladies the impetus to drive on and were rewarded with two great pointed frees from Lauren McGregor in the 24th and 25th minutes to put three between the teams. Mo Nerney got a point from a free for Laois in additional time but the Waterford defence stood resolute and ensured that the team hung on for a well-earned win on the final score Waterford 2-9 Laois 1-10.

This was a good result for the team in a very tight division. The first half of the game was excellent end to end stuff but the standard in the second half from both teams dipped considerably. In the second half both defences were on top and chances were at a premium. The second half was very stop-start and both teams found it hard to establish a rhythm. Waterford by virtue of this win are now in second place behind Tyrone the only team with a 100%  record and this win sets them up nicely for an away tie against Sligo in two weeks time.

Waterford lined out as follows Katie Hannon, Mairéad Wall, Michelle Mc Grath, Kate McGrath, Megan Dunford, Caoimhe McGrath, Deirbhile Nic Aodha, Karen McGrath(C), Hannah Power, Emma Murray, Nicola Fennell (0-1), Geraldine Power, Lauren Guiry, Aileen Wall (1-2) Lauren McGregor (1-6,0-4 frees). Subs used—Katie Murray for Lauren Guiry, Chloe Fennell for Geraldine Power and Hannah Landers for Hannah Power.

Results from Division 2 fixtures:

Honours shared in opening League Tie

Waterford ladies footballers opened their account with a hard fought sharing of the spoils with their Munster rivals Clare when the two teams met in the opening round of the LIDL Division 2 National Football League in Michael Cusack Park Carron in the heart of the Burren on Sunday last. Forced into a number of changes due to illness and injuries, Waterford got off to a dream start with a goal by Lauren Mc Gregor in the 2nd minute followed by a point from full forward Aileen Wall. Two more points in the 10th minute by Nicola Fennell and by Róisín Tobin in the 12th minute left Waterford six points to the good before Clare opened their account with a pointed free from Niamh O’Dea in the 15th minute. Niamh O Dea repeated the dose with two more frees to half the Waterford lead before Emma Murray put over a much needed point in the 20th minute followed by a Lauren Mc Gregor free a minute later. Ailish Considine got Clare’s first score from playa point in the 28th minute before Lauren Mc Gregor tapped over a free on the stroke of half time to leave the score at the break Waterford 1-6 Clare 0-4.

Clare set about their task with vigour at the start of the second half with three unanswered points courtesy of Ailish Considine and Niamh O’Dea (2) to leave just two points between the teams after 9 minutes of the second half. Waterford got a great boost in the 10th minute with a well taken goal by Lauren Mc Gregor but this was cancelled out immediately when a strong run from Grainne Harvey resulted in a goal for Niamh O’Dea to leave two points between the teams. In the 13th minute Becky Mahon cut the deficit for Clare to the bare minimum. The next ten minutes or so were played in a welter of excitement with both teams creating goal chances but the goalkeepers Waterford’s Katie Hannon and Clare’s Ciara Harvey were both equal to the task and made some wonderful saves. Niamh O’Dea levelled matters with six minutes to go and though they tried their hardest neither team was able to produce the match winning score and had to settle for a share of the spoils.

While this was a game that Waterford could have lost the important thing is that they didn’t and it gives them impetus going forward in the league. Division 2 is a very competitive division and any 4 of the 8 teams could end up making the semi-finals. Next up for Waterford is a home tie next Sunday against Laois who opened their account with a narrow but important win over Kildare on a score-line of; Laois 2-11 Kildare 2-9.The other games in the division resulted in narrow home wins for Westmeath who beat Cavan by two points 1-9 to 2-4, while Tyrone had four points to spare over Sligo 1-14 to 1-10.

Waterford lined out as follows: Katie Hannon, Mairéad Wall, Michelle McGrath, Kate McGrath, Deirbhile Nic Aodha, Caoimhe McGrath, Megan Dunford, Karen McGrath, Hannah Power, Róisín Tobin (0-1), Nicola Fennell (0-1), Emma Murray (0-1), Lauren Mc Gregor (2-2), Aileen Wall (0-1) and Lauren Guiry. Subs used—Rebecca Casey for Lauren Guiry, Eimear Fennell for Lauren Mc Gregor and Geraldine Power for Róisín Tobin.

Seniors tough opening game in Lidl National Football League

Waterford ladies footballers open their campaign in the LIDL National Football League with a tough away trip to Clare on Sunday next. This opening game in Division 2 of the league will be a close run affair as battles between these two teams in recent years have been competitive and this will be no exception. Both teams had pretty successful years, last year. Waterford gained promotion from Division 3 with their last gasp win in a replayed final against Tipperary. Clare last season easily consolidated their position in Division 2 of the league, reaching the semi-final stages and had a very successful run in the Intermediate championship, only losing out in the All Ireland Final to Kildare, having beaten Tipperary in the semi-final by a point.

The Deise ladies have made a later than usual return to training and there are a number of new faces being introduced into the panel this season by manager Pat Sullivan. Waterford will be without Linda Wall, who has retired from the inter-county scene and Gráinne Kenneally who is away on peace-keeping duties in the Golan Heights in Syria and both will be missed. Clare have many excellent players and the likes of Ailish Considine, Louise Henchey, Shauna Harvey. Laurie Ryan and Niamh O’Dea will make life difficult for the Déise. This will be an intriguing tie which could go either way but Waterford’s experience gained in the Senior championship might just be enough to take a victory here. Throw-in, on Sunday, is at 2pm at a venue in Clare yet to be confirmed.

LIDL Schools Interprovincial’s.

Waterford was well represented in the school inter-provincials played in Kinnegad on Saturday last. Representing their province were Chloe Fennell, Aisling Mullaney, Kate McGrath and Hannah Power. The team won two and lost two matches, winning the Shield final against a strong Leinster side.

Schools News

Waterford secondary schools had contrasting fortunes in the Munster Schools championships recently. St Augustine’s Dungarvan were beaten in the Munster A final by a very strong John the Baptist team from Hospital in Co Limerick.
Presentation College Clonmel, back-boned by a sizable contingent from the Ballymacarbry and Comeragh Rangers clubs  won the Munster B final defeating  Rathmore of Kerry. In the C competition, Árd Scoil na nDéise had a great semi-final win over Coláiste Mhuire Ennis and will now play St Flannan’s of Ennis in the Munster Final, while Scoil San Níoclás An Rinn bowed out at the semi-final stage being narrowly defeated by Rockwell College Co Tipperary
